The Orlando Gun Show is coming up in July and again in August. I think I'm taking the plunge after years of wanting to.

I have a bunch of questions.
-Best bet for a small, concealable? .380, 9mm?
-Manufacturer?
-Price point? Looking for reliable and well built, not top of the line
-What's a good size with affordable ammo combo?
-What should I look for in a dealer?

I will get my concealed permit for this. I think I know the answer but a few more will make me feel better: As a veteran, I don't need to take a class only present my DD214 correct? If I can save 2.5 hours of my life I'd be grateful.

Get a Smith and Wesson 9mm Shield. For the size, ease of shooting, and caliber, you simply can't beat it. It's the smoothest shooting "small frame" conceal firearm I've ever shot. It's also really affordable.

I've been thinking about getting a shield .40 for carry. I like my sd40ve just fine and the only reason I'd get the .40 over the 9 is for consistency. It has pretty good reviews and is priced pretty well.

I prefer a .380 but mostly because I'm not a big guy. I can easily conceal a small .380 in my pocket but the 9mm pistols are slightly larger and don't hide as well for me.

I carry a S&W Bodyguard which is extremely reliable but the trigger pull is very long, so my accuracy suffers somewhat. My wife carries the Ruger LCP .380 which is basically the same exact gun as the KelTec .380, only more expensive. It's easier to shoot but a little snappier IMO. I've shot others but the Sig and Diamondback .380s are my favorite.

The Diamondback had issues on initial release but they seem to have corrected them. It is easy and VERY accurate.

Let me tell you a dirty secret- the Smith and Wesson guys hate the Bodyguard.

As for the Ruger .380- I bought it and promptly destroyed it for being such an unreliable piece of shit.

Buy a 9mm Shield already.

Thanks. Another question: Are there any models/manufacturers that I should stay away from?

I'm a Glock guy. When I concealed carry (which isn't often), I carry a Glock 27 which is .40 caliber. Glocks might be slightly more expensive but their reliability is legendary. I also like Glocks because you can use the mags from the larger guns in the smaller ones. For instance, in .40 caliber Glock makes the following models: 24, 35, 22, 23 and 27. The 27 is the smallest. But you can use the mags from all the larger models in the 27. Same principle applies to the all their 9 mm, 10 mm, .45 caliber guns as well. You can use the mags from the larger guns of the same caliber in the smaller guns. That along with the reliability make Glock the choice for me. Glock does make a good single stack 9 mm. But I prefer .40 caliber. Little better stopping power but still small enough for concealed carry. For revolvers, I like Smith and Wesson. But I wouldn't use a revolver for concealed carry. Good luck.

I would like to try before I buy. I've held a Shield and it's a little bigger than the Bodyguard which juuuuuuust fits in my back pocket nicely while the Sheild sticks out a some. Why do the S&W guys hate it so much?

As far as the Ruger LCP, I've never had a problem with it and I've put over two hundred rounds through it. I didn't find it unreliable at all. I know of two cops that carry the Kel Tec version as their personal carry weapons and they've put shitloads of rounds through that. I don't understand the hate.

Edit: I did a quick search of reliability issues on the LCP and everything I've read contradicts your statement about being unreliable.
