Hate if you want, but I'm glad they are honoring GOL this way.

I feel what GOL did for the school far outweighs the negatives and the way he went out, so some kind of tribute was in order. Not sure I'd go as far as put a statue of the guy up, but "George O'Leary Field at Brighthouse Networks Stadium" is more than appropriate.

That being said, I think the timing is way too soon to be announcing this. I mean, we're just 1 year removed from one of our worst seasons ever and a pretty ugly exit. We have a new coach that's bringing excitement back to the program and trying to instill a new system, yet we're going to anounce his predecessor is getting a statue before he even coaches his first game? Frost was always going to have an uphill battle to get out of O'Leary's shadow, but this only makes the climb tougher.

My experience has been in that talking with people close to the program that most long time boosters, fans and administrators know and understand how much GOL contributed to the growth, stability and reputation of the UCF program. I think many of them hate the way it all ended and are feeling just a bit guilty for asking him to stay after the Fiesta Bowl when he could have gone out in a blaze of glory. This is a way of trying to undo that, but it is entirely too early for this kind of thing.

Timing is everything.

If he had been allowed to retire after the Fiesta Bowl, fine. Build a tower at BHNS with a 40ft statue/fountain that pisses on the student section for all I care. A handful of months after he is forced to retire because of a winless season??? Ummm no.

A year or two from now. After we win a bowl game and the program is back, do it. Maybe not the 40ft pissing version, but a statue or the field named after him would go over much better.

Agreed.

People hate the 0-12 season, but in reality it was probably better than a 6-5 season. It forced GOL to leave without Key as HC. Really left us free to hire Danny White and Frost and change the culture at UCF. If GOL leaves after the Fiesta Bowl I am willing to be we are stuck with Brent Key at the moment.

Boy the reactionaries are in full swarm. Just remember, they never built a statue for a critic. That would leave out Dennis Dodd for qualifying....

Maybe he really is sick and that's why they're rushing it. Why wouldn't these donors wait for at least one season to pass?

I seriously bet that someone is going to piss on it. Some classless clown. Vegas came out with an over/under of 24 hours.
