How deep-pocketed donors may be influencing head coach search ... this week's Knightline Podcast

Glad to hear Lil Greek is doing well. I think Les Miles would energize the fan base the most but I don't see it happening.

It's fun to have a wish list! Stormthecourt? Who do you like for Head Coach?

Les Miles is 62....

Bruce Feldman really wants Geoff Collins to get the UCF job. He has been promoting him ever since GOL announced his Retirement. Maybe they know each other through agents . With Chizik or Miles you could get the bigger than the University arrogance that some hated about GOL vs a younger coach that really wants to be at UCF and prove himself.

16. Geoff Collins, Florida DC: One of the better DCs in college football, Collins has turned a very good D (330 total yards per game last year) into an even better one (282). His ability to relate to players is also a big plus in recruiting. Before becoming a DC, he was director of player personnel at both Georgia Tech and Alabama and three years after he had those titles, those programs won championships — the Tide won the 2013 BCS title, Ga. Tech won the 2009 ACC title — and after his time as the Knights recruiting coordinator, UCF won the 2013 Conference USA title and the Fiesta Bowl. He’s a strong candidate for the UCF vacancy.

Really important couple weeks coming up and very little of it has to do with whatever happens Thursday night. Thanks for the podcast info, fellas! Keep it up!

Undecided about Cristobal ... curious as to more of the specific reasons fans oppose him?

over Schiano? Yes but does UCF want to go retread again?

I'm big on Collins or Cristobal but apparently 99% of UCF fans think Cristobal would be a terrible hire. Recruiting is half the battle, look West...

Can anyone cite an example, where a retread (i.e. a coach moving down in class) proved to be successful? Neither GOL nor Schnelly were success stories, more mediocre than anything else. Are there any other examples?

the fear of gold teeth and fast 40s

Or the fact that outside of a single season, he didn't do very well as a HC? Maybe he's improved since then, we don't know, but it isn't as if he was hired away from his HC job to work at Alabama, he was fired from it. And I do think his recruiting numbers at Bama should be taken with a grain of salt, he's recruiting for Alabama. It's not the most difficult sell.

Cristobal detractors point to his record as head coach at FIU (27-47) - A program he took over in the midst of sanctions (following a 0-12 year) in just their 3rd year of Division 1 play. Cristobal got them to two consecutive bowl games in 2010 and 2011, then was surprisingly canned after a poor 2012 season. FIU hasn't been back to a bowl game since and has posted a 10-26 record in those three years, so it's not like his firing has improved things down there at all. Also, the fact that he isn't a coordinator of an offense or defense is worrisome to Cristobal's critics.

Cristobal was about Danny White's age when he took over FIU and still has a lot of coaching ahead of him. Surely he learned some lessons there that will help him going forward. He did have two good consecutive seasons at a program no one before or since has been able to win with. Just as important has been the opportunity to learn under Nick Saban about how to be the executive of a successful program from the top down. He'd be able to identify good recruiters and get them in place quickly to pay dividends soon with his connections in places we need them in the state of FL. The combination of youth/energy, relative wealth of experience, and desperately needed recruiting acumen would go a long way to getting this team back in shape. I'm on board with Mario.

thoughts?

Chizik and Collins would be good hires BUT like GOL they would rely heavily on a good OC for a perennial winning team. Bring back coach K as OC and you know he wont go anywhere :) or offer Taafe the job again now that GOL is gone.

More on Cristobal... even though he brought them out of APR sanctions, they began falling back towards sanctions again. "The Brawl" against Thug U was one of many on field and off field antics the team had showing significant disciplinary problems. FIU was not only 27-47, that was in the SUN BELT! Best season was 8-5, a record most on here would not be happy with in the Sun Belt. And, the following year after Cristobal's depature, which was with Cristobal recruits as upper-classmen, the team went 1-11 in a slightly tougher CUSA. He is not the type of flashy name high end recruits are going to jump onboard to. Heck, even Thug U fans don't want him. 'Nough said?

Thanks Hammer and Eng for the posts on Cristobal. Any fans of his on the boards?

Storm: Might be the first time I've seen Wilson mentioned. Interesting.

Hammer: Weighed versus need to hire assistants and hit recruiting trail ASAP.

I'm pretty sure UCFmikes is his biggest fan on this board.
Id rather the team hire Collins, Durkin, or Frank Wilson from LSU. Babers is alright too

That's right. That's my guy and I'm sticking to it. Some of these other choices are just too old, too expensive, not available or we're not in their league. There are also a lot of programs looklng to hire right now.

I think Geoff Collins would be the perfect fit. He's a good recruiter that already has Florida recruiting ties, and a former UCF coach so he's familiar with the landscape, relationships and challenges here.

Chizik has been a head coach for only five years and were ready to call him a retread lol.

Ucfmikes: Do you trust him more on the recruiting side or you think he's the best all-round choice? TT

He's my choice because like Leavitt he's built a program, recruited nationally and in south Florida, been a head coach and has been part of top program (Alabama).

Collins has moved around to a lot of programs in a short time and his past shows that he would use UCF as a stepping stone IMO. Again.

and we know he can coordinate the Defense if he needs to.

The positive of Kiffin is that he is a good play caller on top of a Recruiter

Andy Staples w another Collins endorsement

UCF
You're hiring:
Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins

This is an excellent job, and the correct coach could ride it into the Power Five either by winning in Orlando and jumping to a bigger program or by winning enough in Orlando that the Knights earn a golden ticket in the next round of conference realignment. Collins worked at UCF from 2008-09, so he understands the program's potential. His work at Mississippi State from 2011-14 and with the Gators this season has been outstanding. Make his Swag Chalice runneth over, and he could bring his psycho defense two hours south.
