How many times have you heard, "It's so much better in New York?"

People from NY can't seem to finish a sentence without telling you how great it is, or how much better it is than where they are, how much they miss it, etc. Yet they left NY and probably actually hated it when they lived there.

I've never talked to anyone that didn't think that where they live is the best place on Earth (including me). Then again, I've never talked with anyone from Syria or Iran.

There is nothing, and I mean nothing that I have experienced in NY that i better than Florida. Yes I know that home is always best but no way, the people here are just not happy people.

If you can afford to experience great New York things then it's an amazing place to visit and experience those things. If you're judging it by Times Square then yea....it sucks.

But if you know what you are doing then here's no city like it. I could never live there but always enjoy my visits and going to new restaurants and shows and whatever else.

I'm not talking about visiting, I'm talking about living in New York and I mean New York and Long Island. Upstate is completely different, no desire to live their either but I'm talking about spending at least a year here.

This is my experience as well growing up in little NY/NJ.

apx Zero. nothing is better in NY
Food, live music, theater, spring, fall, public transportation, shopping, drugs, nightlife, jazz clubs, etc.

I can't believe you old curmudgeons are pretending New York is so aweful. I wouldn't live there either, but I understand there are amazing things to do there.

I go to NYC every month or so for work and love visiting there.

Most of the people in this thread aren't bashing NY, just the people that are from there that never shut up about it. If it was so much better, go back.

I can get food anywhere - i'm not a "foodie" and eating is not an experience for me. just give me sustenance
live music - plenty of good shows in Florida, I've sen all of my favorite bands in Jax or Orlando
Theater - i guess, but i am bored stiff in plays. though Broadway is a whole 'nother game
spring, fall.... ok? i guess decent weather makes standing around in a concrete jungle somehow better
public transportation - ok, ok. I love the subway but have no use for it in Jax as there aren't 8million people. i can drive anywhere at anytime without trouble
shopping - didn't realize they had putdoors stores in the city. i'll be sure to hit up REI, strike zone, and West Marine next time im in NYC
drugs - plenty of good drugs in FLorida, i don't need
nightlife - ummm ok? there's some cool bars in NYC, clubs are atrocious, i'm an adult and myh priorities couldn't be further from a crowded bar. If i'm going out there better be a beach-side or dock-side patio i can go enjoy the fresh air and some cocktails; otherwise, i'm not interested.
jazz clubs - WTF do i want a jazz club for
etc - please elaborate

Don't get me wrong - i LOVE NYC. It's a great place to visit for 4-6 days every 5th-10th year. However it offers very little to me aside from marveling at being in the big city. All the stuff you mentioned is great and all but very far from the things that are important in my life.*

Spoken like someone who has no clue.

How so?
You're the one speaking in absolutes. Nothing you have experienced in NYC is better than Florida? Damn, you must be eating at McDonalds every night, and only going to see superhero films at the Multiplex. There are plenty of things in NYC better than Florida. There are plenty of things in Florida better than NYC.
By writing such absolute statements, you either look like a dumb old fart, or a cheap moron who can't bother to pay for the better things in NYC.

NYC near Christmas time is the absolute best. You can't replicate the energy of that city anywhere else. I could never live there but NYC is a unique experience that you simply can't find in Florida.

It's not just what NYC has, it's how much of it. You can walk for a day and find new stuff on every street that is worth seeing and doing. I once bar hopped down one single street with some locals and it was one of the best times that I've had.

But yea, you'll go broke pretty quick paying those prices for long.

That's the thing. People who live in NYC talk about the world class food and culture when in reality they spend the vast majority of their nights eating ramen noodles in their $3k/mo studio apartment posting on facebook.

Last time I was there we stopped at Gramercy Tavern which is fairly well known as one of the best spots in the city. We ate in the Tavern and it was actually reasonable; I think my dish was like $22 which is cheap for NYC.

However the cocktails started at $15 a drink.

If you had the ability to read you would have read this thread was about living here, not eating out for a day or so. I also said NYC and Long Island, not just the city.

Exactly.
You could go a whole year eating/drinking at a new badass place and never duplicate. It doesn't even have to be fine dining, either. The cheap ass ethnic foods in NYC kill pretty much every other city in the world.

I went to a Moroccan place in the East Village that had the best ME type food I've had.

It was better than places I went to actually in the ME.

awesome place to visit but it would get old fast

Outside of Florida I'd prefer the Vegas, San Diego, LA region. Much better weather, more laid back, open spaces, and all the entertainment of Broadway shows can be found on the Vegas strip

much different show scene in Vegas than Broadway.

i dont think many people here really know the talent level and/or the types of shows that are regularly rotating on Broadway.

The main thing Vegas holds a candle to is it's restaurants. Granted in Vegas it's almost all 'famous chefs' places...but still it is a place you can find some of the best food/chefs from across the country in one place. New York you can spend a lifetime there and still always be discovering new places - both well known and not.

If anyone can name a place or two in Orlando that can even remotely compare to the Italian you can find in NYC I'd be interested to know.

Um, you cannot compare NYC to Vegas.

NYC is an absolute buffet of authentic tastes, culture, experiences, and things to do.

Vegas is one giant fake Disney World for adults that exists purely to extort money as fast as possible from visitors.

Agree with all this. Obviously NYC has more of everything than probably any city in the US. More great restaurants, and plenty of terrible ones too.

La Luce and Prato are both in Orlando and are some of the best Italian places I've been to outside of Italy. Not comparing them to NYC's best, just pointing out a couple really good Italian places in the area.

This may come as a surprise to you but there is more than food in New York. Is your snobby ass getting on the subway at 1:00 AM

Why wouldn't I get on the subway at 1am? Unlike you, I'm not afraid of scary minorities and people with lower socioeconomic status.
You don't make a goddamn bit of sense.

Thats the government and the mob for you ...

I did like it when I lived there, but outside of pizza and bagels it's much better in Florida
And that's just because their drinking water system is so old and nasty the tap water adds minerals to the dough that can't be duplicated down here. After Katrina, a bread factory had to shut down because the water plant got replaced and they couldn't make the bread taste the same anymore.

Speaking of food, I'll be in London in a few weeks. Gonna hit up Brick Lane and stuff myself full of the best Indian cuisine outside of India.

Best Indian cuisine outside of India is Gaggan in Bangkok. #1 restaurant in Asia on San Pelligrino's list.
;)

I'll be going there next year.

NYC is a massive sewer. I can remember standing in the subway 40 feet underground 2 days after New Years and a drop of water landing on my head. I thought about the path that drop of water took to get to my head...from the street above. Water was dripping on other people without them caring. I immediately concluded that the populous was happy living in filthy, cramped, high-population density areas and didn't care about the shit-water hitting their heads.

This coming from the guy that only flies first class, eats in 5 star restaurants laughs at anyone that goes on a cruise. Sure you would ride the subway at 1:00, just like you would live in the Parramore area.

Been to NYC multiple times to visit family. Rode the subway at all hours, from Hell's Kitchen, to Broadway & 89th, to Pelham Park, to The Village, to Spanish Harlem, to Yankee Stadium, pretty much everywhere. Not even once did I feel unsafe or threatened.

NYC is one of the greatest cities in the world and there is plenty of NYC that is better than Florida. Just because you're a turd and don't like it doesn't make it true.
