I hope UCF sues this assistant basketball coach for Thiam

It sucks but it is what it is. In this day and age, a freshman center who has a Big Dawg season is destined to take his services elsewhere for a multi-million dollar NIL deal.

If some 'hangers on' can convince the high bidders he can sway the kid one way or another, it's bound to happen too.

The problem is when you have an assistant coach at a school that is actively pursuing other deals with other schools. There is no doubt that they would win that. After winning that I would hope to this coach never gets another job.

I’m thinking he wasn’t under contract or he’d still be here. Doesn’t matter though. Just play under those rules and use it yourself.

It seems a little shady indeed. Is he Thiam's agent now?

Trying to put it in perspective, all the jobs I've had as a professional, I had to sign a no compete clause, and also no giving away secrets.

If I got someone to quit with me so we can go work for a competing company (for more money and knowledge) I would have gotten sued for sure. But, I have professional ethics and never did that nor would consider it.

Maybe it didn't say anything in his contract. I don't know...shady for sure until know all the facts and keep me off the jury pool as I'm obviously biased! :p

Head coaches leave and bring players with them all that time. Of course they usually pay a buyout as part of the contract, however, if there is no buyout clause.

He was working for UCF at the time that he facilitated the exchange of a player to a new university. There is no doubt that he violated his employment agreement as well as other clauses that are applicable.

In addition, this is a scumbag move. This guy should not have a job anywhere after this.

It seems to not be against the rules to do what he did. Just learn to use rules in your favor going forward. It may not have been behind Dawkins back. He got a Center really fast. Even before it was announced he was leaving.

Sounds like he is an agent.

Double dipping Dakar

Thiam was tutored at UCF by former NBA player Mamadou N’Diaye, also from Dakar, Senegal. He had been the Associate Head Coach for Dawkins this past season. N'Diaye, a 49-year-old 7-footer himself, is in line to fill the Cincinnati Bearcats coaching vacancy left by the departure of Drew Adams who moved on to the Darrian DeVries staff at Indiana according to sources and reports.

There aren’t any rules in college on who can be an agent. In pros you have to be licensed as a sports agent. Anyone in here can speak for a player as long as they ok it. That needs to change. Someone is going to get screwed over bad if they keep allowing anyone.

I don't understand how or why there are not any rules. An assistant head coach can work against a team by negotiating the best player away to a rival team?!? And, then get hired with that same rival team? What the heck. That doesn't seem right.

I understand everybody's frustration but when you live by the sword, you die by the sword. Why do you think Coach Dawkins hired Mamadou N'Diaye in the first place?

N'Diaye was a former NBA player from Senegal who was shopping around his connections with a Senegalese kid -- a promising young, big man -- he was mentoring. It's a worthy debate as to whether Dawkins was hiring an assistant coach back in 2021 or investing in the prospect of a 7'2" center signing with UCF after he finished his secondary school education.

All N'Diaye did with Cincinnati was continue the same game he's been playing with the kid.

The difference is the coach was unaffiliated when Thiam came here. He was gainfully employed by UCF when he was working to get Thiam elsewhere. Cincy should be ashamed

Yeah, something isn't right..or lawful. I mean you're a coach, and as the season is being played, you're working on a deal with other schools to pay yourself and the kid that you get to leave his current university. Think about the distraction and the back door phone calls. It seems to violate ethics and your job title.

Good point. But should the coach be working on a deal with other schools to pay himself and the kid that you get to leave his current university? Maybe it's fine unless there is a non-compete or some stipulations.

This all makes sense now. Cinci must’ve contacted Ndiyae knowing that he and Thiam were a package. They offered N’Diyae a raise to come to Cinci and bring his trainee with him. Honestly I can’t blame Thiam here as he is just a kid following his mentor, this is just shady stuff by N’Diaye

Contracts will soon be put in place to correct many of these items IMHO. I wonder why contracts covering all this don't already exist.
Actually, I just read a huge article on this because of the younger Iamaleava at Arkansas, and usually there is a buyout the kids violate, it's just universities haven't been enforcing it YET

He was shopping this kid for months. Cincy may have have contacted him but after the coach put the neon sign out for Open for business to bidders

That is my suspicion as well. Dawkins may well have played the same game getting the 2 of them as well. I really don't care about high school recruiting anymore. Just go to the portal and do the best you can.

I’ve seen you write this a few times, and it just doesn’t make sense. It’s the opposite of what UCF’s program should be thinking.

Who would want to put all their eggs in the portal basket when you have less money to lure players with than any school in your conference (and less than some G5 schools as well)? And start over from scratch every season?

Thiam, Ta. Hendricks, Da. Johnson - these are the most talented players UCF has brought in (Dawkins era). All high school recruits…

Dawkins doesn't have a history of recruiting very well, but at the same time - it’s not something that should be forgotten.

Johnny gave him his first opportunity and gave him employment. He was employed and worked for UCF and undermined UCF while working for them to benefit himself. Prior to Johnny he was not employed by a University. A bit of a difference. HS coaches always got hired to the college ranks but he was different
