I almost forgot what basketball actually looked like since it's been so many years since we didn't look likd garbage. I've been unable to attend a game yet. I'm psyched! Defense, back door cuts, players swarming the rim...it sure is a welcome sight to see.

UCFs defense had Stetson on lockdown. They came in averaging 80 per game and we won 81-45. They had 2 points in the paint for the game.

And AJ played tonight! Glad to have him back. With these guys playing so many minutes early, I hope their conditioning is where it needs to be for conference play. If we can get Chance back that will make for a great 8 man rotation.

The range of their signal is shite. I live in Lake Mary, and it's terrible. The game is on 96.9 though. I listened to the first 15 mins in the truck as I drove home.
DANNY! PLEASE DO SOMETHING. UCF has always had the worst radio network in all college sports! It's because three communications conglomerates own all 44 stations in Central Florida, so they can do whatever they want, including to make sure that we can always hear UF, Miami, and Seminole stations every square inch of the state. But for UCF, evening signals step down to minus 10 watts. Because football often played during the day and we're at the evening games, few complaints. But Marc Daniels is broadcasting to zero listeners for basketball.

Are you asking D White to go back to the 90s and tell Colin Powell's kid and Bill Clinton that they shouldn't allow deregulation? Wow, I did learn some thing at UCF. Take that UCFProf!

The reception on iHeartRadio is always good :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
Decent point. I can stream from my vehicle but honestly I'm used to that crap contract with IMG, who did not stream UCF games. You had to listen via OTA radio station. Using data sucks but it beats some national radio show being streamed during a UCF game......

All UCF Hoop game's should be available for free on iHeart app for 96.9 fm.

Then why not save the money and dispense with the sham of radio signal broadcasting altogether? I know a radio station owner in Daytona that makes a lot of his revenue from Embry-Riddle for broadcasting their games (plus the ad revenue during the game).

I was just about to post this very same thing. Glad to see basketball winning. I'll be watching a lot more!

Hopefully we get crowds soon like we did 5 years ago. The lower bowl was always packed and we even had the upper level pretty full for the bigger games.

Let's be clear, everyone expected a down / rebuilding year in preseason.

We have been very good and amazing compared to preseason expectations.

3 reasons for this: the return of BJ, the development of Tacko, and most importantly Johnny Dawkins.

Get excited. All real fans should be.

Just like football, early season results are now raising expectations to unrealistic levels. We'll be calling for Dawkins' head by the end of the season for not winning the AAC.

Why did you expect this? Donnie was a good recruiter and let good talent slip through his hands with his game planning and game time decisions. I didn't expect this from Dawkins and yes it is always very helpful to have a good center. My greatest disappointment with Donnie is how he let the team's defensive play slide after his early seasons.

Yea I know were 5-1 but we still have a very tough conference play in- a conference that we've never even finished .500 in. So let's temper until we go through the grind of conf play. I have hope and excitement, but I'm not gonna be that surprised if were not world beaters in the conf

I'm glad we have Dawkins, but Donnie was missing BJ Taylor last year and Tacko has improved into a dominant center. We now cause problems for teams double teaming Tacko that we can shot 3's. 1-1 with tacko is dunk city. Having an elite PG is huge this season.

I'll be honest and say I expected a rebuilding year and us towards the very bottom of the AAC. We definitely needed a change even if it wasn't 100% Donnie Jones fault.

there's no guarantee Tacko develops under DJ's staff

Donnie had plenty of opportunity. His record speaks. Period!

We need a coach who can win our conference championship for us, first. Like GOL use to say this is a true measurement of success and one we should use for all athletic teams.

fyi, the women's team is 6-1 also.

I didn't watch last night's game in too much detail but was Stetson trying to do Hacko-Tacko? Listening to Marc Daniels he said that the defender just wrapped him up and not let him shot. Then he missed the front end of the field goals. I wonder if teams will start using Hacko-Tacko. Marc mentioned that he was 70 percent shooter last year, but this year he isn't as good.

You mean almost everyone. Cynicism protects us from making commitments. Always easy to climb aboard later on with no penalty. But this time the late comers get stuck with the worst seats and a permanent recording on Rivals of encouraging folks to wait til next year. Mr. expert and insider, KL, is the worst of that bunch.

feels excellent to be a competent team in basketball! Yahooooooooooooooo :)

so as a Football guy is it safe to assume already that Donnie Jones was a really good recruiter but a terrible in game coach?
every time anyone got called for a foul, Donnie would have a knee-jerk reaction and take them out. BJ is awesome. Tacko is much better! Brown improved. and the new transfers are great!

With Tacko being so tall, the opposing team can't take a jump shot within 10 feet! Amazing! :)

Matt Williams can't miss and Anthony Davis will be back full force soon!

All cylinders purring and Tacko is like a soccer goalie on defense! :)

Eleven rebounds his first game back wasn't too shabby in a backup role for A.D. last night. His timing was just off on some cripples and drives. Could have knocked me over with a feather when I saw him shooting pre-game instead of his usual retrieving the rebounds. Dawkins said, "some time in December" and it was still officially November! He got a standing ovation when be came in 6 minutes into the game. Within a game or two, he'll be back in the starting rotation. Dawkins said last night that he played all 5 positions in the game, but I got the biggest kick out of when we went "small" with 4 guards and A.D. still was the one who brought the ball up court!

Well, once Tacko was cleared by the NCAA just before the start of the season last year and was finally allowed to practice with the team...he improved by leaps and bounds from Nov to late Feb last year...and now he has taken another giant step in improving...as he still has only played basketball for 4-5 years, let alone just 1 year at a high level. (His HS was in a very small division).

Having BJ back at the point is doing wonders...as that is something Tacko (and everyone else) missed badly last year.

BJ is amazing! He is a superstar!!! What a catch by Donnie.

Completely agree with KnightTime's comment (below)

3 reasons why everyone should've expected a down / rebuilding year: New Coaches, lack of depth, and current players not "fitting" into the new system.
  1. Coaches take time to be effective and get buy-in from the players
  2. Only 7 scholarship players - serious lack of depth. You can say "look at SMU last year" all you want - but they had top 10 recruiting classes, could afford to give up on plays but still were fatigued near the end of close games. We're talented. Not that talented.
  3. DJ's players don't "fit" into Johnny's system, just like GOL players with Scott. This was first evident when Johnny release / didn't sign DJ's recruits. Then became really clear with this last 3 signees. (I believe Johnny is adopting his preferred style of play to the current players just like how Charlie Taaffe did. But expect a different product in 3-4 years)

More credit should be given to Johnny than a typical fan would give if you recognize these challenges that Johnny has found a way to overcome. And give credit to the players. Everyone of them who has played, has played hard, and looked like they each improved in the off season.

All very true. However, it hasn't been BJ feeding Tacko. Matt Williams seems to be dishing the ball the most to Tacko, Tank also and now AJ have been looking for Tacko too.

Basically, I'm saying yest Tacko has improved but also the team his helping him more and it's not just BJ's return that is helping Tacko.

Yes, there's still upsides left for BJ. He cannot pass to Tacko yet (Matt and Tacko are better because they spent all last season with him). BJ can still go whole games without an assist, but his assist average is up already over 2 years ago. And now he can take over a game without ever attempting a 3, like he did with 10 quick points -- all but one in the paint --early in the 2nd half to blow the game wide open. With AD back to often bring the ball up, BJ can play more at the 2 spot like he so often did in his freshman year. And he can get back on defense instead of trying for rebounds so often.

BJ''s threat (and actual ones) to drive leaves Matt open on the wing.

BJ is a SCORING pt guard...something that is a must for any good team these days.
