Isn't it about time we hear about a Gus contract extension?

Gus will soon complete year two of his initial five-year deal.

UCF is obviously on track for a conference championship game appearance and Gus is in line to potentially cash in a lot of bonuses.

With UCF going to the Big 12 next season and receiving revenue bump, one would think Terry Mohajir is angling to secure Gus for a few more years and increase the salary and pool for assistant coaches.

Is it possible Gus could get looks in the coaching carousel this offseason? Would he be interested? A new contract and higher buyout (it's currently $5M if he leaves prior to Dec. 31) would shut that down.

As it currently stands, Gus would be the lowest-paid coach in the Big 12 among known salaries, though I'm sure we will see an increase between now and 2023.

Mike Gundy (Oklahoma State) - $7.5M
Brent Venables (Oklahoma) - $7M
Steve Sarkisian (Texas) - $5.4M
Luke Fickell (Cincinnati) - $5M
Dana Holgorsen (Houston) - $4.2M
Matt Campbell (Iowa State) - $4M
Neal Brown (West Virginia) - $4M
Dave Aranda (Baylor) - $3.8M
Chris Klieman (Kansas State) - $3.7M
Joey McGuire (Texas Tech) - $3.2M
Lance Leipold (Kansas) - $2.4M
Gus Malzahn (UCF) - $2.3M

TCU and BYU are private and don't release salary information.

Obviously, whatever UCF pays would still be near the bottom. UCF is slated to receive a first-year revenue share from the Big 12 in the $18M range, 2024 will be $19M and will become a full-share member in 2025, which some have estimated to be $50M or more.

So the big payday is coming, but not immediately. UCF is making around $7M annually as a member of the AAC.

Cincinnati backed up the Brinks truck for Fickell this past spring, increasing his salary to $5M and his assistant pool to $5.2M. UCF's assistant pool for the 10 on-field assistant coaches is $3.3M. I am not sure if that's an apples-to-apples comparison with Cincinnati as the Bearcats could be factoring in other staffers into that number (analysts, recruiting office personnel, etc.). I didn't see a distinction when researching.

Just something to think about and watch in the coming weeks...

Here is the original contract UCF released, though it didn't spell out the exact bonus values.
