Here are the comments that Boren and Bowlsby made about what they would be looking for in expansion candidates. Note how UCF is the only school that dominates almost all of the categories.
Boren
We’re looking at the strength of the athletic programs, their competitiveness.
In the first year of the AAC, UCF had more conference championships across all sports than any other school. In football, UCF won the first AAC Championship and went on to a dominant win in the BCS Fiesta Bowl against B12 champion Baylor then went and won a share of the championship again the second year.
We're looking at the fan base
UCF has consistently had higher fan attendance averages than Houston, Cincinnati, Memphis, USF, and UCONN almost every year over the last decade.
We're looking at access to media markets.
UCF’s media market is significantly larger than Memphis, Cincinnati, and UCONN. The media market rank of those three schools is actually getting worse while Orlando has been getting better. Don’t give me any crap about UCONN having the NYC market. That would be like claiming that UCF has the Tampa market. Houston has the #4 TV market, but their TV ratings have been no better, and often worse than UCF's TV ratings.
We're looking at the academic standards of these universities, the level of research and teaching at these institutions.
There are so many different rankings it is harder to judge this area, but here are a few things to look at, UCF is a Tier 1 Research university (along with Cincinnati, UCONN, USF and Houston). Memphis is not. UCF, USF and Cincinnati have roughly similar rankings in lists such as US News and World Report. UCONN is a bit stronger higher while Memphis is MUCH lower.
We also stand for academic excellence. When we use the term student-athlete, we use that very seriously and that's just not a slogan.
UCF has the highest football APR of any public FBS school in the country and is in 10th place nationally behind only premiere private schools such as Duke, Notre Dame and Stanford. All of UCF’s sports programs have some of the best APRs in the country.
Bowlsby:
I would say that we are looking for members that will grow over time as we grow, that will bring stability to the conference and that have a high top end, will benefit from an affiliation with the schools that are currently in our conference.
UCF's athletic program has been rising steadily and successfully since it first started. UCF’s student size and rapidly growing population in Central Florida give it the advantage in future growth of it’s fan base and athletic success. When we moved from Div II to Div 1-AA we were the first school to qualify for the playoffs in their first year of eligibility. In 2013 UCF was the youngest school to win a BCS level bowl game.
One of the things that was interesting to me today in the consultants' presentations and a look back at the history of expansion in other conferences and what's happened to some of those schools that have joined other conferences. There's been a high level of improvement in those schools, from the time that they joined the conferences.
When UCF moved up from the MAC to CUSA, we won division and conference championships. When UCF moved up from CUSA to AAC, we won two conference championships in the first three years. Cinci and UCONN can make a similar claim after moving up from CUSA and Independent status respectively (though not as strong...fewer conference championships and no BCS bowl win), but Memphis is nowhere to be found in this discussion.
