1) How many perps of the mass shootings that occurred in the last 10 years would have ended up on this watch list?
2) Killers will just pack extra bullets with them.
3) True, but knowing this won't solve the mass shooting issues in this country.
4) Not sure how a gun safety class is going to keep people from killing other people on purpose.
5) Who gets to determine if someone is "off the wall crazy"? And given how great this country's mental health system is, how do get someone help without having to Baker Act them? People without insurance don't get help. And you cannot force someone to use their insurance's EAP plan.
Based on the arsenal in the San B's perps case, without those guns they would have just blown up people and places.
And let's not forget that one of the worst mass murders in this country's history (1995) was not done with guns. It was done with a bomb.
While I'm not an advocate of guns, here's the situation: guns are not the problem. People are the problem. Specifically, law-breaking people are the problem.
So, what is the solution? Well, there isn't a "one solution fits all" answer. For starters, yes....we NEED to expand the ability to help people with mental health issues. That unhappy person who isn't coping with their situation needs to be able to get help without huge bills or societal disapproval keeping them from assistance.
Do we need to keep certain people from getting access to such weapons? Sure. Certain people. Not all people. Making a bunch of laws isn't the answer....lawbreakers don't care. Drivers are required to have a driver's license and insurance, yet about 20% of drivers don't.
It's going to take numerous solutions for this complicated problem. Make a list of all mass shootings in the last 30 years, find the common denominators (p.s. it isn't "they used a gun"...think deeper). When we realize there are multiple reasons for these events, we will realize there are multiple solutions that have to occur.
tl;dr : guns aren't the problem, people are.
