Actually neither are really mainstream popular and the UFC's popularity is plunging. TV ratings fell off a cliff starting back in 2012 and have never really recovered. The recent bouts on FOX have drawn flies and the last fight was outdrawn by the US Figure Skating Championship.

UFC had its' day in the sun but that is long gone.

Pretty much. I don't watch mma/ufc but it seems to be 100X more popular than boxing right now. We don't want to see boxing, we want to see two guys beat the hell out of each other.
It would never fly, but after the fight the other night I said that they should change the payout structure so that each guy gets $1MM for showing up. Then, the winner gets the remaining pile of cash. It would be fun to structure it in such a way that if he wins by KO then he gets the full payout and by decision he gets some amount less than full payout.
