How an inside joke between classmates spawned a fictional three-star recruit

This is a pretty hilarious article about Rivals and 247 getting catfished on a fake recruit. Rivals gave this kid 3 stars presumably because he reported offers from Syracuse, Alabama, Georgia and a few others. They didn’t see him play. They didn’t know he didn’t have those offers and was 6 inches shorter and 50 lbs lighter and wasn’t even a scout team player on his high school team.
Really exposes some of the issue with people taking these sites so seriously and putting real stock in the “fact” that 4* > 3*. They basically gave this kid a pretty decent rating just because they assumed he’d land at Alabama or Georgia or somewhere in the SEC/P5.
