NASA Earth Science Division to be Defunded

Maybe the Guardian can stop whining about what's going on here and lobby their own government to fund this "critically important" research function then?

We're talking $2B a year here. Maybe these governments can finally send money back our way to fund this if they really need it.

Yes, using NASA's infrastructure in space makes no sense to study planets. Oh and NOAA has faced cuts and threats of cuts too over the last few years.

That is not what I said. NASA doesn't control every satellite. NASA National Aeronautics and Space Agency. NOAA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. If direct TV and other companies can put satellites up and run them or find someone to run them so can NOAA. NASA research has long been far away from their primary mission and those agencies developed to study the earth should lead it. Period. This isn't the 60s where satellites are hard. Satellites are common to every industry and just because they are in space shouldn't make it NASA's prerogative.

Earth is part of space too. And NASA frequently studies atmospheres and climates of other planets as standard practice. Would make sense to study the only planet we can live on too. Is more research on Earth a negative or something here? NOAA/NASA certainly can work together.

And what about the cuts and threats to NOAA anyway? Too much research there too? Wouldn't want to know too much about what's going on!

Please just admit you're butt hurt and searching for a "Trump wants to ruin the planet!" Narrative so we can all move along. That's what you're after here. A faux hysteria about something that has not even occurred or been proposed yet.

Not sure why you're so upset with facts. These quotes are directly from the Trump camp. He's the president-elect and it's a major issue. What's wrong with mentioning it?

It's not "too much research" is wrangling in the scope creep. NASA needs to focus on their primary mission just as NOAA needs to. Earth is part of space but using that same mentality, so are humans. NASA looks out from earth and NOAA should look back at it.
