November 4, 2018 - Colley Matrix Rankings

Nice to see Pitt moved into the Top 50 win column for UCF. Probably helped move UCF to #8. Need Cincinnati to stay ranked in the Top 25 to get one in that column. Also need all UCF opponents to keep winning and moving into the Top 50. Temple, Memphis, FAU, USF and Houston could end up Top 50 wins for UCF. There might be a path to the CM #1 spot but it will be narrow and winding.

Winning out and being in top 4 of CM is where we need to hang our hat when/if we get there with these CFP weenies.

Agree #8 was fair. I'm more concerned about Clemson who already has 2 Top 25, and 4 Top 50's, Alabama 1/3, Notre Dame 1/4. You're right the cards must fall just right for it to happen, but hope springs eternal.

You think there's any shot in SC giving Clemson trouble in the final game?

We won't win the CM championship if any of Bama, Clemson or ND win out. ND isn't winning out. Realistically, I don't see either Clemson or Bama losing to anyone on their schedule or in the CFI until they play each other.

The same Colley Matrix that had Notre Dame ahead of Alabama after getting stomped by them 42-14 in 2012, and had Alabama number 1 ahead of Clemson in 2016?

Yes, the same one that also had UCF ahead of Auburn last year before the Peach Bowl that everyone said UCF was going to get killed in.

Colley Matrix had Notre Dame ahead of Alabama in 2012 and Alabama ahead of Clemson after they played. Notre Dame was Colley Matrix National champs in 2012 and Alabama was in 2016.

If it helps you sleep at night 2017 UCF was top 3 in 5 of the 6 computer rankings that made up the old BCS. Yeah colley obviously had them 1, but the consensus among computer rankings was UCF was a top 3 team last year.

Only ranking with a public formula that is unchanging and unbiased. Like I said the other computer rankings put UCF in the top 3 in 2017.

Unchanging, unbiased and non-sensical. How on earth can CM crown Alabama national champs in 16 after Clemson beat them. Notre Dame was the CM national champion in 12 after getting destroyed by Alabama 42-14. CM is a farce.

The CM analyzes the full schedule of a teams season. The formula determines the statistically better team, like UCF over Auburn. Does that mean UCF would have beaten Auburn 10 out of 10 times, no. It means UCF should beat Auburn something more than half the time. The Matrix doesn't predict one off games. That's why we need a playoff using only the CM's teams. Unbiased.

CM takes into account the full schedule of games played. It isn’t biased toward who won last. That is why you can have rankings where a team is ranked higher despite losing head to head. See Purdue ranked lower than Ohio State this season. The fact that Alabama on a whole was better that year doesn’t take away from Clemson winning a single game. Fact of the matter is Alabama and UCF didn’t play head to head in 2017 and as such there is no paradoxical ranking.
