Looking for insurance for two homes in Orlando, preferably from a fellow Knight. DM me if you can help out in these crazy insurance times.

Citizens dropped us recently, and also tried to have us get flood insurance when we aren’t even in a flood zone. Crazy times indeed.

I stumbled on OpenHouse, was really easy and was 50% of what I was paying with Citizens. Don’t know about Knights, but they are Orlando based.

One of the big ideas this year's FL legislative session on insurance is to strip windstorm-related coverage out of private insurance and make it so that everyone in the state has to buy Citizens coverage for windstorm damage and private insurance for fire/theft/liability/etc.. The idea isn't new, it was proffered back in 2015 most recently, but could drastically lower premiums for homeowners in the state. Sounds ideal right? Well, not to FL-based insurance companies.

You can thank Charlie Crist for today’s crisis. He and his morgan n morgan buddies all made Citizens the largest insurer in thebstate as opposed to being the insurer of last resort. Then they didnt allow for needed rate increases back then when we had quiet seasons. In addition, charlie stuffed efforts to reign in frivolous lawsuits.

The result we have now is very few reputable insurers and a whole lot of no-name companies with poor claim reserves. Many insurers simply wrote Florida off back in 2008 and have never returned unfortunately.

No offense being in this industry and having worked on both sides of the aisle, this is a horrible idea. Citizens is generally run by political appointees with no experience in the industry. When handling claims and litigation they generally have a check the box mentality. This would cost Florida, its citizens and taxpayers dearly.

With Citizens handlingn claims the way they do premiums would certainly rise. The only thing that would even help keep costs down is the fact that they are immune from bad faith.

You are exactly right but the “insurance companies bad” group thinks the government would run things better. Anyone that deals with Citizens knows that’s idiotic.
