It seems like the amount of crime around the UCF main campus area is getting out of control. I feel like every couple days there is an armed robbery, break-in, assault, or (most recentl) a drive-by shooting. I graduated in 2011 and never felt unsafe anywehere on or near campus. I'm certainly dissapointed with the UCFPD and OCPD.

These instances are just the ones from last month....

It's been discussed in the Dungeon a few times.

A one conclusion was that there is more reporting of crime now versus 15 years ago. Cuz I will damn sure tell ya the same shit was happening around east Orlando back then.

Ugh. Anecdotes and specific examples are not data, look at the overall crime rate throughout both florida and the US, and crime has been steadily decreasing for decades.

Yet despite this actual decline, people's perception of crime has not changed accordingly.

Please people, always remember that the news is not a valid metric in order to measure crime statistics because there will literally always be enough crime that they can make you feel unsafe. Step away from the 24 hour news cycle, it's a healthier way to live.

Great post of the above facts. Just to add to them, listened to the BBC where they have the same decreases in the crime rate. Several interesting theories on why and people's perceptions are always "things are getting worse".

One violent crime in/around UCF's campus is too many.

With UCF's explosion and more "well to do" students attending UCF...criminals know they are easy marks...but when there are shootings/sexual assaults/armed robberies, etc...like there have been in recent months...I hope Dr Hitt publicly pushes for more support from Orange County Sheriff's Dept because what happens just off Dr Hitt's campus DOES impact the perception of his University.

More needs to be done to curb gangs locally and state/nation-wide. Look how bad Pine Hills got before the FBI Gang Unit finally came in and cleaned "some" of it up. Here's an article from November of last year showing some stuff that has been done, but with regional kingpins living out in plain sight, I don't know how these characters aren't rounded up, locked up, and throw away the key.

The regional leader of one of the largest gangs, the Latin Kings, lives in Sanford. A KKK red dragon lives in Christmas (and has for 40 years). Several local gangs have leaders in Oviedo and Waterford. Spend ten minutes in University High School and you can identify at least 5 gangs.

More needs to be done or we will end up looking like Miami or Los Angeles.

robbing drunk students at gunpoint walking out of local UCF area bars and taco joints weekly was never normal until recently. It may have been happening in other areas of Orlando but not the UCF area

I had a crazy guy knock on my door in the Apollo dorms. I answered the door and he barged right in and asked me to order a pizza.
Now they have cameras set up at those dorms. So security is a little better.

It has to at least be some relief that all he demanded was to order a pizza!

UCF is building a campus downtown in Parramore. Should be safer there. Criminals know that students are an easy target. Young, naive and have parents money.

Yeah...unless they build a 15 ft high wall around the campus...drunk students walking home from Orange Ave will be targeted...over and over and over again.
