Practice Tidbits

Funny. I didn't need to see a practice to know our 2017 team was going to be spectacular.

Maybe you need a new pair of prescription glasses..............assh*le.

You weren't here in 2017. I was. I call BS on your 20/ 20 hindsight reimagined

I was at practices. I have called up and down years for UCFootball, herr on Rivals for over 10 years.

Go take a lap n00b. And learn to respect the Real UCFans.

If you want respect. GO TO PRACTICES. And write about them, here.

Or just become a better poster.

I know the UCF defense played like crap at times last season, and I know the Big12 offenses that UCF faces week in and week out will be exponentially better than what the Knights saw in the AAC.

But statistically, the 2022 Knights defense ranked among the top five or six units in the Big12 in rushing defense, passing defense, scoring defense, passing touchdowns, completion percentage, plays per game, total first downs, and penalty yardage,

Statistically Marshall would have ranked 1st or 2nd in defense in Big12.

That's true. I tried to qualify my post by saying the offenses UCF faced last year were far inferior to the offenses in the Big12. Same goes for Marshall of course.

My point is IF the UCF defense, even with occasional struggles, can continue to rank among the Top 5 units in the categories, then UCF will exceed expectations in Year 1 in the Big12, assuming the Knights' offense is comparable to other offenses in the league.

A lot of ifs and assumptions, but whichever team wins close games will likely make the CFP.

His point was you can’t use stats when changing conferences. Especially from lower to upper tier.
End of the season the defense was borderline terrible. Final five games opponents averaged 32 points a game.
Agreed and agreed.

IF UCF can finish in the Top 5 of the new league defensively in multiple categories, the Knights will have several chances to win or lose games by one score (pretty standard for the Big12).

TCU was 5-0 in regular season games decided by one score.
Oklahoma was 0-4 in regular season games decided by one score.

  • Leblanc will have to sit out a season.
  • JRP is the starter, Timmy is #2, but it sounds like someone else wants the #2 spot more (probably the Charlotte transfer)
  • Medley and Grable healed from Spring injuries, and practiced with the 1 squad today
  • JRP is in the category of the type of leader who went on to win championships.
  • Night and day difference in terms of JRP's development and readiness relative to last year
  • Will probably do more late-game situation preparation since playing more competition and more games are likely to come down to the wire.
I was wrong about bullet #2. Rizk is pushing Timmy for the #2 spot

So repeat of last year where the word from camp is Freshman QB is competing with existing QBs? Will we hear how they have 3 QBs that can win now.

What's different is JRP is #1, period. TM is #2 but DR is doing good things. I think TM is still #2 on opening day, but it sounds like DR is excelling in the pocket, while TM is excelling out of the pocket.

I do think theres an opportunity for jrp to make a “sophomore leap” in terms of his passing

I hear college quarterbacks make their biggest leap from Years 4 to 5.
People want to believe Malzahn made the right call in committing to Plumlee and plays like a legit QB. Otherwise it looks like a bigger blunder than anything Heupel did.

Back in December after the bowl game most hoped Malzahn would have a plan to move on from Plumlee for this season.

I remember after our bowl game in 2016 most including myself hoped that was the last we saw of Milton. Just shows how much improvement is possible after the first year. If JRP can improve just half as much as Milton did, we will all be happy :)

Most hoped that Malzahn would step aside from play calling and hands-on running the offense and he has. Now most hope that Hinshaw coaches up JRP or, if that's not possible, moves on to QB2....right now it sounds like JRP is learning and improving. We'll soon see how much and, if it's not enough, whether Hinshaw has the authority to move on to QB2. Hopefully he won't need to.

Not true, usually it is year one to two, aka kenzie milton. Jrp is uniqie bc last year was really his freshman qb season
I was being facetious. Most great college players, quarterbacks included, get drafted prior to their senior seasons. JRP should be a second-year NFL player by now.

Correct. It will look terrible if JRP shows the same inconsistencies he showed last year while Keene carves up the Mountain West like a Christmas turkey.

One thing that can potentially help JRP is the wide receiver room is deeper and the offensive line should be more apt at pass blocking with transfers from pass-happy uat, the MAC or PAC-12 and WAC slated to start.

None of that will matter, however, if JRP takes the snap, stares down his first read, and takes off running every time Javon Baker isn't open.

On a positive note, I do tend to think JRP will settle in and be more comfortable in the pocket now that he isn't having to look over his shoulder at a better quarterback. I see no reason why he won't pass for 3,000+ yards and run for 600+ in the Big12.

Except he is a 5th year Senior, so don’t expect much if any. However, his skill set can be more effective with better play calling (only in about half the games last year I thought play calls were made that suits him) and being more careful with his body…..a 70% JRP is pretty well useless.

Been listening to these interviews closely.

I think we will have a hurry-up, run-first type of offense.

It makes sense since it finally looks like we'll have a solid 2 deep at O line and endless RB talent.
