SCOTUS Justice Antonin Scalia Has Passed Away

Senate needs to block anyone Obama sends up.
Would be a hell of a risk for the party to keep a SCOTUS vacant for 10 months. Most ever has been just over 3 months. Sucks someone died, but given his record. Meh.

Unfortunately the American people will lose more freedoms soon. One of the constitution followers will be replaced by another left wing progressive.

LOL.
His body isn't even cold yet and you creeps are shaking in your boots. We should wait 300+ days without a Supreme Court Justice...because Republicans have a huge case of butthurt?
Freedom-loving Republicans showing how much they really love our Constitution and laws.

As much as Obama has disregarded the constitution in his 7 years in office especially with executive orders, there's no reason to reward him with another Supreme Court justice.

That is your brilliant analysis? America and our Constitution is awesome...until Republicans disagree with something.

But, for the record, Reagan used more executive orders than Obama and he was "rewarded" with a third justice.
If you had any clue, you would know that Obama has used the fewest executive orders per year of Presidency since the 1800s, Copernicus.

Skin deep as always chemmie. While it is true that the executive orders are down, the way that he uses them to circumvent Congress and laws is quite different than his predecessors. Also, many of the most controversial executive actions were taken via other means, such as presidential memoranda.

But go ahead, oh brilliant mind, and tell us how our Dear Leader's executive actions that run end around the constitution instead serve it.

Thanks for bringing up Reagan. He signed an immigration reform BILL passed by congress. Obama is trying to accomplish the same thing through executive order. Amnesty for 8 million by claiming prosecutorial discretion. Funny thing is Obama claimed a couple years ago he didn't have the power. His executive orders are on a completely exaggerated level compared to past presidents.

Obama has less executive orders than both Reagan and Bush. And Clinton. There is also no way that the 12 million undocumented people would ever be deported under any circumstances. So it's probably just better to work within that reality and try to find other ways to further integrate those people into the US.

Edit: Also a fun unrelated fact, considerably less vacation days than Bush. Even though Obama is considered "lazy" by comparison by many people. And an exec order is an exec order. It means the president did something without the explicit blessing of Congress. So the number is certainly relevant and valid to compare across presidents.

but...but...but... OBAMA'S ARE WORSE!
The guy makes the least amount of executive orders since Grover Cleveland, but he is clearly abusing his powers because Fox News and Breitbart told you so.

You guys should really remove your heads from your rectum and start demanding evidence and proof for the claims you believe are true.

The Senate has every right to block, and or vote down a nominee, and it should do so.

So obama writes an Order granting legal status to 8 million people and reagans orders were similar to this "
Executive Order 12337 -- Basic Allowance for Subsistence for Uniformed Services".
Seems like a big difference to me. But you don't want facts. Seems like you're the one with your head buried chemmie.
And to cnewton you certainly don't have to reward people who broke the law. If people want to immigrate to the US there's a process in place and lots of people in line.

LOL.
Republicans love the Constitution and America's rule of law, until they decide it isn't working in their favor.

It would be a disgusting display of partisan hackery if Republicans were to take a 3 month process and draw it out for over a year. The people already voted for the President, and that President has the Constitutional obligation to nominate a Supreme Court Justice. As long as that nominee isn't a legitimate radical, the Senate has the Constitutional obligation to appoint them... not draw the process out until they think they can get another radical like Scalia in there.

8 million people aren't being deported regardless of who is president, move on.
They might not be deported but why let them vote and draw welfare forever?
Chemmie you must not follow the senate bc it was the democrats and Reid that changed the rules with the nuclear option when it wasn't in their favor.

Reagan had 4 Executive Orders related to immigration issues: granting executive amnesties to Poles (1981), Ethopians (1982), reversed 200K Nicaraguan deportations (87), & deferred deportation of undocumented kids (1987)

And I love your constant claims without providing supporting evidence.

Instead of debating you into a corner again and have you start screaming RACIST!!! I'm just going to assume you don't know the definition of hypocrisy.

I wonder if the tables were turned (with a lame-duck Republican President) what the Republican-controlled Congress would be saying about this?

You're certainly not the smartest redneck in the trailer park.

I honestly think you're the one who doesn't know the definition of hypocrisy, especially since you can't give an example of my hypocrisy.

Yawn. Already jumping to name calling and I haven't even said anything yet. There are three or four examples of your hypocrisy in this thread alone. I'll go ahead and list them and the other most common ones.

Whining about people jumping on Scalia's grave yet you're always in a race to be the first one to post about shootings and BAN GUNS!!!

Whining about a dead guy that was President 30 years ago for ruining the world while defending Obama by saying one man doesn't weild that much power.

Whining about the GOP blocking a potential nominee while defending the Dems when they were in control and passed the nuclear option that the GOP can now use.

Whining about the military industrial complex and all the people that make money off of it while spending most of your life working in that exact industry. When are you giving your paychecks back to the tax payers?

Always whining about conservative politicians cheating and stealing while ignoring that Dems do the same thing and that you admitted on here that you had to cheat to make it through UCF.

Blaming all of Christianity and white people when some looney toon Christian terrorist kills a bunch of people while calling everyone RACISTS!!! for saying extremist Islamic terrorists.

Looking down on people for what they drink and eat while you drink Miller High Life.

Calling everyone racists and bigots for where they live and shop while you live in your upscale white neighborhood and eat at 5 star restaurants.

Always attacking Sir G for bragging about his wealth when half of your posts are bragging about your next vacation or the super expensive whale cum beer you had last night which again was all paid for by the evil people on wall street and the military.

Eating and staying in restaurants and hotels that the people waiting on you can't afford while complaining about wealth inequality.

Do I really need to continue? I'm fine waiting until after you have your emotional breakdown about all your wealth/white/military/privileged guilt for you to respond with something I've been hypocritical about. Hint, you won't find anything.

I wonder if the tables were turned (with a lame-duck Republican President) what the Republican-controlled Congress would be saying about this?

compare what Mike Lee's office said last night to what Biden said in 87 when Reagan put Kennedy out there

"The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., said: ''I'm glad the President has made his choice. We will get the process under way and move as rapidly as is prudent. We want to conduct the committee's review with both thoroughness and dispatch.''
Grown-ups

It'd be exactly what you expect, everyone would have the exact opposite of position of what they have now because the roles would be completely reversed
Except in the 87-88 nomination/confirmation process, the Senate was concerned about doing it's job and not stalling the process and failing to appoint a competent and capable justice. That was a Democratic majority Senate too with a Republican presidential appointee in that president's lame duck term.

Ancient history in politics. If things were reversed the Democrats would be stalling and the Republicans would be whining about it.

WAHH!!!!! THIS WOULD NEVER HAPPEN WITH DEMOCRATS!! WAHH!!!!!!!

When George W. Bush was still president, Schumer advocated almost the exact same approach McConnell is planning to pursue. During a speech at a convention of the American Constitution Society in July 2007, Schumer said if any new Supreme Court vacancies opened up, Democrats should not allow Bush the chance to fill it “except in extraordinary circumstances.”

“We should reverse the presumption of confirmation,” Schumer said, according to Politico. “The Supreme Court is dangerously out of balance. We cannot afford to see Justice Stevens replaced by another Roberts, or Justice Ginsburg by another Alito.” During the same speech, Schumer lamented that he hadn’t managed to block Bush’s prior Supreme Court nominations.

Notably, when he made his remarks in 2007, Bush had about seven more months remaining in his presidential term than Obama has remaining in his.

I personally think Supreme Court Justices should be elected by We The People. I am positive several will find a way to call me an idiot for saying this but I have never understood the logic. Both parties use these appointments as leverage and ways to get what THEY want done.

I disagree.

First, the Congressmen who vote on Executive Branch nominees are elected delegates under the Constitution, so in effect, the Supreme Justices are being installed by delegates elected by the people.

Second, the general public wouldn't have the first clue on where to begin with electing a Supreme Justice. They can barely decipher facts for congressmen who go sit in a chamber and render opinions and votes; I'd hate to see what the average moron fails to understand related to 1 of just 9 justices that are charged with balancing Federal power and upholding the Constitution.

I am saddened, that many in our country, can find humor in someone's passing..

No matter your political beliefs, you should not make fun of someone passing especially a S. C. Justice, President, or an congressman, or woman. Even when the person comes from the other party, it is called human respect, and flat out something no one would have done in the past.

These days I feel sad for what is coming..
Good people that happen to be liberal went way to far.
As a person, I say same thing as if it was Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that passed..

Thoughts & prayers to the family, and to those that consider Justice Scalia a friend.
