When we first moved down to Florida, I learned that one of the canon events of every elementary school student in the Sunshine State is that fourth grade field trip to St. Augustine. My mother was set to chaperone and I had anticipated it for what seemed like months. About two weeks out she mentioned she had a mandatory training period that was thrust upon her and I was absolutely crushed. My aunt went instead in a pinch and it was fine but I had really looked forward to going with my mom. It was about a year in since we came down from New York and my dad was second guessing if we just should have moved upstate. I went from catholic school in the Bronx to public school in South Orlando and I always remembered feeling transient, like a long vacation visit. When the busses pulled back into my elementary school I saw my mom’s car waiting for us and an ice cream truck parked next to her. She bought treats for my entire class, teachers and chaperones. Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake Bars, the Sonic the Hedgehog icee with the gumball, Choco Tacos, the absolute works. Had to be a pricey tab even in 1995, but she was a educator so she knew the lengths elementary school teachers went to make an impact on children’s lives everyday. That day made me feel like Florida was alright and a memory I cherish every Mother’s Day.
