So far hearing this could be the best Star Wars film since Empire (Strikes Back, not Lucious Lyon). Of course, Phantom Menace also had great early reviews as well, seeing as how if the early reviewers don't give a positive review their journalism careers are all but over.
That being said, it does seem to be poised for success with a great story and superb acting from Mark Hamill. My thoughts:
- Daisy Ridley needs to step up her game or else she risks becoming Hayden Christensen version 2.0
- John Boyega seems to have really embraced the role of Finn and it's good to see them portraying his character as a warrior making his way quickly up the ranks. Reminds me a lot of Worf from Trek TNG.
- Poe needs to die ASAP. His character is pointless, has no substance, lacks chemistry with the other main characters, and is a poor man's imitation of Han Solo. Doubt anyone would really miss him.
- What's the deal with that penguin looking creature screaming next to Chewbacca? I think I'm going to like him but also remember that the last time Star Wars tried to out-cute R2D2 we ended up with Jar Jar Binks. But I think this little guy might be a good fit for the kiddie audience.
- Captain Phasma . . . hopefully she's really a bad ass and not just another PC character following in the sad footsteps of the female Ghostbusters or those 2 chicks from Star Trek Discovery.
- $300 million opening weekend; that's my prediction.
