So what type of program are we? Are we right there with Alabama and Ohio state in never having a down year, getting any recruit we want and being in the national title picture every year?
I'm going to have to channel my inner BS for this answer, so I apologize beforehand.
This is a down year, it happens. We aren't even a football powerhouse so these type of seasons should be expected. Look at UCLA they haven't been to one of the top 4 bowls since 98 and have had losing seasons since. Nebraska the Rose in 02 and have had losing seasons since. Tennessee the Fiesta in 00 and have had losing seasons since. We are not the next Alabama and will be winning 10+ every year and going to the top bowls.
Nobody on their right mind thinks that we are a P5 program stuck in a G5's body. But, by the opinion of experts on the field, we are above average when it comes to G5 programs and we have been severely underachieving under O'Leary. How often did you hear the term "sleeping giant" when referring to us. It seems like we can never get out of our own way. Good season, bad season. Good season, bad season. In 13 years, O'Leary has managed to tally back to back winning seasons only twice. TWICE. Like I've been saying, this is not a down year: this is an expected pattern of mediocrity that, somehow, a lot of our fanbase seems to be ok with because of the height of the peaks. We show zero consistency. There are plenty of G5 programs that show more consistency than we do. I've already used Boise State's example of 17 winning seasons in a row, but everybody seems to push that argument to the side, some of them suggesting Boise has P5 money to recruit.
So no, we are not a football powerhouse. We are actually nothing in the realm of college football right now. The worst part of all this is that some of you are ok with that.
Yes the occasional MAC school or other G5 school will have a 6'6 300lb lineman but they don't line up 5 across that way like your P5 does. We've had some too but not 5 on the line at once. It's not like those MAC schools are out recruiting us to those kids either, there's a lot of big farm boys in the Midwest who probably want to stay close to home and everyone here hates when we recruit out of state anyway.
All information aquired from ourlads.com, and here we go:
Central Michigan's O-Line:
6'4" - 300
6'4" - 301
6'6" - 295
6'5" -300
6'7" - 294
Bowling Green's O-Line:
6'5" - 319
6'4" - 308
6'0" - 272
6'3" - 309
6'6" - 298
Miami (Ohio)'s O-Line (statistically, the worst team in the conference):
6'4" - 300
6'5" - 279
6'3" - 303
6'3" - 306
6'5" - 317
So yes, pretty much every team in the MAC has a 6'6" - 300 lb O'Line. And, yes, those MAC schools are out recruiting us on this department. Big time. Is the midwest filled with big ass country boys that might want to stay close to home? Sure. Are we doing everything we can in our recruiting to try to convince some of those country boys to ditch the farm in favor of the beach? Absolutely, 100% NOPE!
