Stats: UCF defensive stats and rushing impressive. Who'd have predicted that?

The worst defense in several categories is now 12 in PDs (passes defended), 13th in sacks, 19th in yards per game surrendered, and 23rd in passing yards. Even held Michigan to by far their fewest rushing yards. Killins would easily lead the nation in yds/carry if he "qualified" (needs one more carry per game). Also, UCF ranks very high in rushing TDs (14th) and rushing first downs (9th) as well as 19th in rushing yards.

Great stuff. One surprise is I thought we would be running more plays a game. I think we are averaging around 79, way more than ~60 with GOL, but less than 90 that I expected. More plays equals stats being skewed. Which makes our defensive stats even more impressive.

I've said it once. I'll say it again. I don't think Erik Chandler is getting enough credit. [smoke]

potentially dumb question:

where did Brim come from? I don't remember ever hearing about him before this season

Looking at UCF's D...it is easily the most experienced unit on the squad.

In last night's game, here was the breakdown for the 11 starters:

5 were 5th Year Redshirt Seniors (Brim, Rucker, D Johnson, Mutcherson, Clarke)
2 were true 4th year Seniors (Killins and Shaquill Griffin)
2 were 4th year Redshirt Juniors (Guerad and Shaquem Griffin)
One was a true Junior (Pittman)
One was a true Freshmen (Hill)

We hit 91 in the first and third games (despite the MD turnovers, but aided by the 2OTs). But this game was over early in the 3rd quarter so Frost called off the dogs. Not concerned about ratings like Michigan was, so running up scores doesn't help.

Also, Patti (and especially Pete) took forever to get plays off, just like Justin did, staring at the sidelines for help.

Coaches are predicting games with over 100 plays from a healthy MIlton without the procedure penalties by players who can't get set quick enough.

The good news for next year is we will have the entire starting front defensive line returning, along with the LB who leads the team in sacks, Shaquem Griffin.

Defense was always the hallmark of a GOL team. He recruited some top talent, and when he was engaged in coaching our defenses were always stout. That was why I always thought he had already handed over the keys last season because the defense looked completely lost and undisciplined. Coach C just had to step in and actually direct them. The new scheme also fits well with our talent.

Those same starting DB's from last year looked lost much of the time last year. And there was virtually nothing left of the DLine. There was one quality LB and one good defensive lineman back. The cupboard wasn't quite bare (though the DBs are graduating), but it wasn't respectable either.

how about the rushing numbers?!
:cool2:
UCF 2015 Rushing Stats:
975 yards
4 touchdowns

UCF 2016 Rushing Stats (through four games):
947 yards
11 touchdowns

Let's give Chinander another year in this system, see how he does with his own recruits before we anoint him. He's using GOL's talent, and regardless of last year we've always had talent on D.

It's telling that Chinander can certainly utilize skill and experience when he has it, but we need to see if he can sustain the talent, coach up players, and plug any potential holes that may arise when we play more talented opposition. The pass defense against Michigan certainly has me worried, and the DB's are supposed to be a strength of the defense, not a liability.

It seems there is a distinction between our first team secondary and the 2's. First team: Killings, Shaquill Griffin, Johnson & Mutcherson, aka the Seniors: excellent tacklers, hard hitters, good blitzers. Great reaction times on underneath passes, but only fair coverage & ball skills in mid to deep pass coverage.

The 2''s: Clarke, Gibson, Causey, Tre' Neal & Brandon Scott, aka, those who will be returning, Average tacklers, not known as punishing hitters (except Neal) not as quick coming up on screens and short passes as the 1's but seemingly stronger in deep coverage and ball hawking.

So, I'm predicting we will still see a strong secondary after this year's seniors have left, but in a different way. .. Not as strong and quick in run support, but fewer 20 yard plus receptions and more interceptions .

Just one man's early season observations...
