The son of a powerful drug lord is released by Mexican authorities after a spate of violence related to the son's incarceration. Basically, the Mexican government has acquiesced to the demands of mob mentality (no pun intended) and the power of organized crime. Meanwhile, the father ('El Chapo') is tucked away in a supermax facility here in the U.S. where, although there may be some comforts afforded to him based on wealth and status, El Chapo 'aint goin' nowhere anytime soon.

Therein lies the difference between civilized governments and those rife with corruption at the lowest levels. Be thankful that you have a government that is able to provide a meaningful amount of civil protection to the point that you don't have to worry about cartels interrupting your tranquil middle class lifestyle.

A powerful central government is necessary to ensure the safety and security of its people. But let's be honest, Mexico has a wealth of resources and should, in no way, be in the current situation that it finds itself in. Had that happened here in the U.S., the FBI and National Guard would have crushed that uprising with MRaps and SWAT teams armed to the teeth. In the words of Lee Greenwood, God Bless the USA.

friend is a former miami swat and helps run a training company. mexico hired his company to help train their federales to fight against the cartels. when the left the airport to the training facility their caravan came under fire and also on the way back from the training facility to the airport. the cartels are just as powerful as the gov down there.

You know how you take away power from drug cartels? Stop being a nanny-state, and legalize drugs. As long as there's a war on drugs, there will be mobsters that gain wealth and power from it.

But that's no excuse to just throw your hands in the air and give up. Colombia endured a 50+ year civil war with narcotraffickers and the infamous Pablo Escobar. For half a century the country was a mess and the cartels oftentimes outgunned the Colombian Army ... but they never stopped fighting! Now, Colombia is a blossoming economy and Medellin has transformed itself into a very modern and technologically-advanced city bursting at the seams with hot chicks.

My point is, stand up for what you believe in and if your country's worth fighting for, that's exactly what you'll do.

That's not the point and you know it. The point is, they caved in to the cartels ... basically told the world that they're a bunch of pussies.

we definitely need to remove pot from schedule 1 and let the states make their own rules. i dont want to remove the other drugs from that list.

Damn right, Jedi!!!

It's one thing for a country's government to cave to Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Amazon, and Silicon Valley, but caving to the cartels is beyond the pale!!!

Nice logic there; almost like comparing a car salesman to a pimp. Sorry, try again.

WTF is THAT supposed to mean?

What is the one consistent factor which explains why a government (be it Mexico or the United States) would cowtow to ANY organization, be it a prescription drug industry or a drug cartel?

The answer: Money.

You might as well add the NBA to that list as well. But all kidding aside, you're not really comparing a murderous drug cartel to "big oil" or "big pharma" companies that provide lifesaving medicine, are you? Granting privileges to wealthy interests from legal business operations is one thing ... cowering in fear to a drug cartel just sends the wrong message. After all, why should the people of Mexico give a damn when their own government has basically said we won't protect you?

Providing life saving medicine.... for those that can afford it.

And let's not bring up withholding cures because it's better business to keep people sick. Surely Big Pharma would never do that...

That's actually a good example of how a government based on communism can use the 'free market' to get its way. If China were a democracy, Chinese leaders would have to think twice about pushing back on the league for fear of upsetting fans. But in this case, China could come down hard on the NBA and its the league who are the ones risking billions of dollars because they have no leverage.

I was simply saying its a little disingenious to blast Mexico for cowtowing to a murderous drug cartel when many similar (same big money but hopefully not murderous) examples can be seen everywhere.

Government has no business telling people what they can put into their bodies.

The only role government should have is providing accurate information on what specific substances do and what their side effects are. Let people decide if they want to eat that burger, smoke that cigarette, or snort that line. #donttreadonme

Yeah, those stupid government people have no business telling ME what to do!!!

If I want to drive a motorcycle without a helmet that's MY OWN damn business!

.......Okay, yeah, if I get into a life-threatening accident and don't have medical insurance or my insurance doesn't cover all the sh*t done to save my life, I'm sure the hospital will cover the cost, right? I mean you can draw blood from a turnip.

It all comes down to how much do you want government to control your life.

Seatbelts and helmets should be mandatory for anyone under 18. But once you're an adult, you should have the right to be stupid after being educated about the risks. #freedom

I don't think "powerful" central government is necessary and pushing it as the answer to civil uprising is somewhat dangerous. I think, in our system, the powerful federation of states that cooperate using law enforcement and the National Guard (which are state assets) is necessary to keeping our Union free of this stuff. But saying that the only way to do it is to give power to the few in the form of a strong central government is the perfect recipe for taking control of that government and using it against our own country. This is the opposite of the principles upon with our country was formed.

This is the problem with states not cooperating with federal agencies on border and immigration enforcement. If it becomes impossible for the federal agencies to do their necessary work, the federal government will grant itself more power and the states will lose their power. All it takes is ever-changing public sentiment to swing the wrong way.

A bottle of Tylenol only costs $3.

I thought Jedi were supposed to be wise.

LOL That gem from the poster who believes adults should be allowed to do any stupidly dangerous thing they want regardless of how much money it costs our society.

Do you want freedom, or not?

How much do you need to have a babysitter?

Are we going to to step into Demolition Man territory where everything unhealthy is deemed illegal? Goodbye sugar and salt.

It's people like you that brought about prohibition in the 20s that gave rise to bootlegging and mobsters. Stop trying to control people's civil liberties.

Oh, so you're going to play the 'Give me FREEDOM or give me Death!" card?

Sorry Patrick Henry, but I'm going to trump you by playing my "Common Sense" card. Seriously, you're not giving up much 'freedom' in order to provide health and safety for all.

Just a reminder that Shookster stated that Geico Insurance is really no different than a brutal, murderous Mexican Cartel.

Common sense is an intangible and varies from person to person. You cannot scientifically measure or test common sense, so we're left with your morals or whomever is in office to decide how others should live.

No thanks. That's why my ancestors left England. GTFO you redcoat. I'll take my freedom.

yep. Colombia is an extremely underrated and awesome country with welcoming people. I hope Brazil stabilizes eventually bc those 2 countries could anchor the continent & would be great places for Americans to visit more often.

I've been to Colombia and liked it, but they still have a long, long way to go considering that basic things like elections end up prompting assassinations and beatings.

7 candidates have already been killed and another 60 attacked.

Isn't it ironic that for so many years, Colombians looked for safe haven in Venezuela. Now, the tables have turned and every Venezuelan and their mother are risking life and limb in order to make it across the border to Colombia. And again, the beautiful women there are definitely worth the trip.

Part of the reason I love the Sicario movies.
And we have been involved with many.

And we don't care who gets killed at times either.
Like Barry Seal.
