For the one millionth time, the corporate curbside takeaway is a performance metric for the location. The managers know this and pay an hourly wage to the people serving out there. Partly to avoid any problems with the Fair Labor Standards Act, but also as part of an incentive program for folks to want to work out there.
If it is raining or Xmas or you like their body, feel free to throw in a couple of extra bucks, but there is no obligation to supplement the amount paid. Its not like inside where there is an implied duty to offset the lack of a living wage paid by the employer. Some of these curbside takeaway people clear $200 and $300 a night, plus minimum wage on weekend nights. Its a plum job for the young and/or uneducated.
Its a completely different animal than a bartender who gets paid almost nothing and hour plus tips and who has no choice but to take ten minutes to make your six shots in a crowd of people who are otherwise willing to pay a premium for their attention and have the brains to order something quick and simple. Your an oblivious idiot db if you don't tip nicely on that situation.
People who order food to go from the bar Wed-Sat after 5pm should be shot.
Anyone who orders food to go and it is brought to you by an inside server, or especially the bartender, that doesnt leave 15%, no more, no less should be shot. If you pay by credit card and don't tip, it can actually cost them money to bring you the food in some situations.
There is no expectation or animosity for failure to tip from the takeaway worker. It's nice, but not expected.
