Tipping for takeout

Hahaha I was just having this discussion with my step mom today. I tip nothing for take out and normally go in and get it myself at curbside places to avoid the obligation. Is this not right? I am a very generous tipper in bars and restaurants 20-25%/buck a beer but I have never even considered tipping for take out.

Not sure about curbside places. Ten percent sounds okay, I guess.
When I pick up my Chinese takeout, I usually toss in about ten percent. One could argue that they're not doing as much, but one time I forgot to call ahead for my usual lunch order. Normally the wait is about 10 minutes. But since they remembered me, they had my food in three minutes.

Ditto. You want a tip, bring it to my house.

If they are bringing it to my car, I'll typically round up to the nearest dollar and add a dollar to that. So a $1.25 bill gets a $1.75 tip. If I'm at a coffee place or a drive thru (Bubbalou's and Sonny's do this and it drives me crazy), I just round up to the nearest dollar. You don't work on tips making coffee or working the drive thru line at a BBQ place.

At restaurants, treat me well and you'll get 30%, treat me like shit and you'll get 5-10%. You don't deserve a %, you earn it.

LOL, Knoly! 30%?!?! When you have your own family and all the associated expenses you will realize that taking the family out to dinner is expensive enough without giving a 30% tip. 20%-25% is plenty. 30% should be reserved for super exceptional if you're taking your whole family out.

Do you parents tip in the same manner as you?

If they bring it to your car, throw them a couple dollas and keep it moving. If you're such a stickler for $3 then prepare your own meals and save your money.

For the one millionth time, the corporate curbside takeaway is a performance metric for the location. The managers know this and pay an hourly wage to the people serving out there. Partly to avoid any problems with the Fair Labor Standards Act, but also as part of an incentive program for folks to want to work out there.

If it is raining or Xmas or you like their body, feel free to throw in a couple of extra bucks, but there is no obligation to supplement the amount paid. Its not like inside where there is an implied duty to offset the lack of a living wage paid by the employer. Some of these curbside takeaway people clear $200 and $300 a night, plus minimum wage on weekend nights. Its a plum job for the young and/or uneducated.

Its a completely different animal than a bartender who gets paid almost nothing and hour plus tips and who has no choice but to take ten minutes to make your six shots in a crowd of people who are otherwise willing to pay a premium for their attention and have the brains to order something quick and simple. Your an oblivious idiot db if you don't tip nicely on that situation.

People who order food to go from the bar Wed-Sat after 5pm should be shot.

Anyone who orders food to go and it is brought to you by an inside server, or especially the bartender, that doesnt leave 15%, no more, no less should be shot. If you pay by credit card and don't tip, it can actually cost them money to bring you the food in some situations.

There is no expectation or animosity for failure to tip from the takeaway worker. It's nice, but not expected.

ANTI-SEMITE!!!!!

+1 to all of Bob's posts. Why should I be tipping someone for spending 30 seconds to bring food from the kitchen to me? It's the most basic of responsibilities and they do receive a wage to do that. If you tip for that, then what don't you tip for?

I usually tip a few bucks for takeout. I always use my card, so its awkward for me to leave the tip spot empty. However, if i walk into a chinese takeout without calling ahead, they usually make you pay up front before the food is cooked. Yeah, I kind of gotta tip at that point, just in case.

Takeout from a regular restaurant? maybe a dollar or two at the most, if they give me an extra bread loaf or make sure there are utensils and all the sauces in the bag, or they bring it out to my car. Otherwise, zero. Takeout from a place that specializes in takeout (like Chinese or Tijuana Flats)? zero.

I can't tell you industry-wide, but at the UCF Applebees they don't pay a huge amount more for carside than for regular servers. The servers regularly made more money than carside, and that carside person was stuck. That carside person also had to expo their own orders and drinks and so forth, so while it was one table trip, they did the work of more. They took the order over the phone which can be a major challenge given call quality, accent, and the general pervasiveness of idiots (1 trip), entered it, got drinks (would be 1 trip), then assembled the food and brought it out (would be 1 trip). They also have to make sure that the food is ready at the time you're there even if the kitchen is crashing, which is an adventure in and of itself. And when you're running late or incorrectly estimate your ETA, they're the ones that have to refire the order and deal with it.

So, it shouldn't be the same tip as you would with an inside server who is waiting on your every whim while you camp at your table for 2 hours drinking water after your meal. But they should be getting something if they bring your order correctly and on-time to your car door.

not sure what is funny, I've tip 100% before. Tips help put me through college, maybe you should not be so damn cheap.

sir G tips 100% when catering from Berns for his 90 foot yacht.

You really are jealous aren't you. For the record now you have brought up wealth in the past three threads while I dont. I don't have anything to prove but your small penis is getting the best of you.

side note, I don't like Berns, the steaks are very overrated but the bar is a good place.

I've got a family of 4 and tip 25-30 every time. Exceptional service and I'll go up to 100%. We dine out 4-7 nights a week. Typical places we go is $18-30 per entree. But I also get the best seat, usually skip any wait time, and usually get a few rounds or dessert on the house. Living in a resort area, you've gotta take care of each other, and ensure you are taken care of during busy terrorist, err tourist season.

In college my roommate and I tipped 100% every night.

Tip the curbside the greater of 15-20% or $5.

Be careful, 85 and Mac will frown upon that.

When I become a middle class one percenter such as yourself, I will tip like that.

takeout ? As in the container by the cash register ? $0 . That's a relatively new thing in the U.S. I'm old school. Curb side? I never do it, but if I did, I would tip a couple bucks for a small order. For a family order with lots of bags maybe $3 to $5. For a young girl in tight pants and tight shirt $8. Beaming nipples $10.

It's just like at a hotel, or valet parking, or even the rental car shuttles. As soon as the guy touches your bag - you tip. A service was performed. Cough up compensation. DIY = $0 tip.

And wait two additional hours for your food. The service is notoriously bad. German colleagues wish they had the service of American restaurants, and they always rave about it.

You have to understand that most floor servers tip out the kitchen based on gross sales at the corporate places. That's mean if you don't tip on take out they have to pay out of their pocket to serve you. /end thread.

Mac, I wouldn't hold my breath that you'll get there. Most dems that get there inherited their wealth.

Please forgive the stupid and clueless...they have no idea how the world works. (literally)

When they pull up curbside because they don't want to go inside an Outback and purchase a Fosters, they think their Bloomin Onion and Steak come from the Chef Fairy and no one inside the kitchen ever does anything.

My wife's family is wealthy but we have not received a dime of it. When her father passed she will inherit money but sorry Joe, everything we have we've earned ourselves.

Well that is a bad assumption on corporate's part to think that you handing me food at my car window justifies a tip. That's probably why you have shitty service inside because the curbside stuff is eating up their tips.
