I dvr'd the new one with the Rock and Jack Black but I did watch all of the new True Detective. It's obviously very different from the first season (which is good) and I am interested in seeing how all of these characters come together. One major note is Colin Farrell's cop character. I immediately like it and I will be the first to say I really didn't think much of him before. Vince Vaughn is more of a wait-and-see type since I am really not sure where his part will go.

TD will be good and I think this episode was just introducing the new characters, which they managed to do pretty well. It didn't have nearly the sticking power that episode 1 of last season had, especially given the way they told the story (interviews at a later date vs retellings) and having to cover down on 4 main characters vs 2.

One thing they seemed to fix in TD was that you can actually understand what in the hell most of the characters are saying. I had to CC several of the TD episodes last year because McConaughey was almost impossible to decipher.

Oh, and the feminists in the New Yorker and every other writer who bitched about TD being a sexist show can STFU now that Rachel McAdams is on.

I love that the first intro to McAdams character was a guy in awe of some sex act she just required him to do that blew his mind.

Yeah, I can't wait to hear more about the "holding companies".*

Seriously, I agree that Vince will be wait-and-see. I will say that the exchange he had with his wife before heading to the gala was one where I had to rewind and turn the volume up. If it only happens once per episode then I'll be fine (compared to the first season).

Obviously there's much that has to play out, but I immediately like Rachel McAdams' character. I've liked Colin Farrell from time to time and it looks like he may flourish in this role.

One question though - when McAdams' character stops by the yoga place to talk to her dad, why is her partner with her? She was only going there to ask whether he's seen her sister, so it didn't really seem like it was prudent to any investigation.

That's wrong. If you recall the conversation they had in that trailer with the woman they're serving foreclosure to, she says that her daughter has been missing and that she used to work at "some weird religious place". McAdams character immediately names it as the place her father is at and the mother confirms that's it.

Her and the partner then go there to check on the girl who worked there. Her dad being the head "yoga dude" is just an interesting coincidence.

Ah, ok, thanks for clearing that up. I must've gotten sidetracked during that part of the conversation. It was the Spanish lady she was serving, right?

Yep. She bitches about the foreclosure saying the police can do that, but can't do anything about her missing kid (or was it sister?). Interestingly, she claims that she issued a report with the city police but nothing is being done about it. McAdams character seemed interested to know why.

Ok, I got the first part of that (I think it was her sister). Missed the rest of it though. If there's one thing about this series (including season 1) is that you can't turn away for even a second because you're liable to miss something critical. I've learned my lesson.

I had to re-watch the first half of Season 1 last year since I apparently was missing the subtle references to the Yellow King and Carcosa. Which I watched for it more closely it really did tie things together better later on.

Very, very interesting. I hope this isn't one of those "Harry was wearing a bulletproof vest" moments, because here's a screengrab/pic that someone posted on another website:

Well, you knew they weren't killing him off in episode 2.

Well, that's the natural thought; however, there was discussion on another website earlier that spoke about HBO's history of fake/deceiving trailers. I'm clinging to the picture as proof that Velcoro doesn't return as a ghost, doesn't appear only in flashback scenes and doesn't wake-up-and-it-was-all-a-dream.

Episode 2 was much better than Episode 1, mostly because they introduced all of the story lines and could start really progressing the actual plot with all of them intertwined. The weirdo running the private "retreat/cosmetic surgery" joint was certainly odd.

I also like VV better already with him being a desperate villain rather than the "mainstream" guy he was trying to be in E1.

I'm not sure why McAdams was watching porn at the end but I like where it's going.

True. By the way, VV was 10 times better last night.

Pizzolato has a thing for creepy WTF masks too. The crow/raven whatever thing was absolutely awesome. Almost as good as:

Based on her comments to her boyfriend in episode 1, some weird stuff happened to her in that commune.

The guy running the retreat was Rick Springfield.

LOL holy shit it was Rick Springfield. What a random, odd choice for actor.

Yea it's clear that the hippie running the "institute" was involved in some sketchy shit back in the day, considering there were 5 girls and 3 committed suicide with the other being in porn. Ani is probably pretty f*cked up too and we'll see more soon.

This episode was really good, but I still miss Russ Cole opining about the universe over a 6 pack of the cheapest beer available.

On another note, Ballers has been pretty good so far.

The Brink, however, is horribly stupid. It's neither funny nor exciting.

I thought Ballers looked interesting, but it has been so awfully boring to me so far. I think I'll give it one more shot before I throw in the towel. I agree on The Brink though - there were a couple of times in the first episode that I half-smiled, but it wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it was going to be given the cast.

I thought they came through with that shooting ok. It was kind of unbelievable but so was the end of True Detective season one where the killer buries a freaking ax in Rust's chest and he lives.

Ok so officially, Vince Vaughn is an absolute bad ass. That is how you beat the living shit out of someone. The story is really starting to come together.

And Woodrugh finally gets to put his severely repressed gay sexual identify to work when he finds that he can poke around with gay male hookers to find clues!

Finally got caught up last night, I like it so far. They've done a good job of storytelling in the short 3 hours aired.

Bump.

I'm close to pulling the plug on this season. Four episodes in and I still know virtually nothing about the characters, aside from VV's character that at this point really doesn't matter at all, and there's nothing interesting or intriguing about the plot. I have no idea why I should care about Frank trying to re-start his drug peddling business in the context of the wider "mystery".

There's also no real difference between any of the characters aside from ones a woman, ones a closet gay, and ones a corrupt cop. They're essentially clones of eachother with a lot of internal and daddy issues.

It's not just comparing is to Season 1 at this point either, this season is just missing on most accounts. It's medicore TV at best. Sadly I'll probably be lured into watching more just to see where this mess ends up, but right now it's mildly interesting TV at best.

It's starting to remind me of The Leftovers. It's coming together entirely to slowly.

At least The Leftovers had interesting character development and reveals during the season. So far TD has none of either and it's frustrating.

I have absolutely no idea what a repressed gay identity, being a shit dad, and inability to get a boner have to do with this murder mystery plot.

they have done an absolutely horrible job of making this thing flow or even remotely understandable.

This sums it up. It's all over the place. I'm guessing that all these loose ends will inter relate somehow but honestly they lost me and there will be no holy shit factor on the finale for me. I'm pot committed now to finish watching so I'll tough it out for 2 more weeks.

This...and what Joe and Chris have already said. Aside from the closing scene of one week and the opening scene the week after, there's little congruity between episodes. Last night's was a complete snoozefest for me. Velcoro "surviving" the shooting was infinitely more believable than a stoned-out cop managing to wrangle a stoned-out sex slave through a maze of hallways, down a couple flights of stairs while slashing a couple of guys, etc. I'll continue watching because I have to, not because I necessarily want to. Except, I agree that VV has really grown on me each week, so maybe I'll justify my having to watch as wanting to see how his arc ends.

VV's character has been a nice development in this series. I really didn't think last night's episode was bad at all. The problem is they take a miniscule 45-second piece of drama that happened 3 episodes ago and then make it into a major piece in one down the road. I don't have a problem with foreshadowing Take the scene where Frank and his wife went to visit Stan's widow and son. First of all, who the fukc was Stan and why the fukc should we care? We basically never met his character and only know he was brutally murdered. I guess he was a good gangster/man though because he taught his son how to play baseball!!!

I just got to watching it last night. While I felt like this episode had more interesting dynamics than past ones, the ending left me almost laughing. There is this ultra highly secret hooker party, with some of the "most powerful men" attending, with Blackwater-esque security working the place, and yet she escaped by going out a window? With Ray beating up a few guys along the way? Oh and she just happened to wake up next to the exact missing girl that has pretty much been irrelevant since the beginning?

C'mon!

The issue with this season is that we're getting too much info and not enough context to give a shit. For example, these diamonds keep re-appearing them disappearing. Am I supposed to give a shit about these or not? Why are we supposed to care about the shop keeper who was killed in the riots? Why are we supposed to care about Frank's henchman that was killed, for which they devoted a 7 minute scene to?

And then we had the ending line "This contract- signatures all over them!". Last season we had masterful dialogue between WH and MM, this season we have a confused gay dude informing us that contracts have signatures on them- and we're supposed to find that curious.

I'm still watching because at this point why not? But damn.

While last night's episode had some really good moments, yet again they pull something ridiculous out of the hat. Paul and Miguel's butt-sex relationship was all nothing more than some elaborate plot to set up Paul since Miguel is involved in the Catalyst corporation. W.........T...........F. I mean seriously, could there be a scenario that's more off the wall.

Frank dealing with the Russians and plotting his revenge looks like it could be eventful next week.

But did they really have to have Ani and Ray hook up?!? The two people on the show who have the least amount of chemistry go at it. I understand: two lost souls who are f'd up relate for a moment. But it would have been more believable if Ray and Frank ended up having sex.

Frank is the only character that has any redeeming value and the bloodbath that will ensue next week will be worth watching.

I mean, did anyone say "Oh Damn!" when Paul got shot? Not in my house. This season is rambling like a BS post with a few nuggets of something interesting thrown in.

Jesus Tapdancing Christ...I'm done. I'm throwing in the towel. I tried, I really did; but, I feel like I got completely bamboozled.

Nic Pizzolatto is nothing more than a wannabe M. Night Shyamalan.

LOL, what did it for you? I mean you at least have to watch the finale since you've come this far.
