Gay doesn't have to equal a certain political position. Belief in Jesus doesn't have to equal a political position, which it doesn't as you pointed out.

Maslows hierarchy of needs. They aren't free to vote on their needs of self actualization when their needs for safety and belonging are being threatened by republicans. Even if they wanted to vote republican most will view the party as adversarial to them.

If the republican party stopped attacking gay bi trans issues more would see the option to voting republican. People respond to the carrot and the stick. Just like with black voters, democrats dont have to offer the carrot if republicans are only offering the stick.

I get your point, that democrats present security. It seems odd that if we have such a huge problem in these areas that those voters would want to continue down that road. The factory owner also provides security in that he'll keep paying you minimum wage but at some point doesn't a person say "what you are offering isn't good enough?".
