UCF basketball post season play?

Johnny Dawkins said pregame that he wanted the team to run and play without calling plays. That's basically what we witnessed.

Looked like Street Ball. Cincy didn't play bad, they looked pretty good and probably should have won that game. They got some great shooters. I'm trying to digest how UCF won that game...wait a tick...Darius Johnson scores 31 points! That's how!

The post game interview with DJ was pretty good with the TV personalities.

I got a date on Saturday and am going to have to watch on DVR later that night but then the Final Four games are on Saturday night also.

I hope we get to play Villanova. I don’t think we’ve ever played them. With their prestige (obviously down years), I think it would be fun

Yeah man. Thiam has to be more disciplined in those situations. Nearly cost us the game. It was definitely a foul. Gotta feel bad for those OSU kids but I'm glad we're moving on.

.... you don't call an off ball foul in the closing seconds of a 1 pt. game ..... those were experienced , disciplined refs ...

We played them about 10 years ago I think lost by 8-10. Nova was loaded too. They had Bridges, Brunson and a few other NBA players

Didn’t watch the game, but very happy for DJ that he gets a little cash in his pocket after staying loyal to UCF all these years. Good for him, good for all these guys.

So I saw that 50k would be spilt 10 ways (Or more, depending on if they advance). Who is the 10th guy? All I know that’s on the trip are the 8 players that have logged minutes (Johnson, Johnson, Ivy-Curry, Coleman, Machowski, Hendricks, Williams, and Thiam), and then Poopha…

I would have thought the money will be split nine ways? Anyone know the tenth in the group?

There are a few walkons that don’t play. They probably give them some. How are coaches getting paid? The schools I’m assuming or Dawkins out of his pocket? Nice to get free flights, hotels and food there to help the schools not lose much money. Getting some exposure as well. Maybe we can get a few good transfers if they are watching.

Poopha is their only walk-on.

Just going down their roster, I know Hall, Sellers, M. Williams, Taylor, and Simpson are not with the team.

That leaves Jocius and Elijah Hulsewe? One of those randoms must be sitting at the end of the bench in street clothes maybe? But I haven’t seen anyone else in anything UCF has posted. Weird…

Jocius is in portal. He played during regular year. If he was there he’d be playing. I’ve seen multiple guys in uniform that never played in bench during year.

Hulsewe is there in street clothes. He and Poopha are practicing with them (probably to give them 2 teams of 5 for practice purposes)....but the real surprise this week is the emergence of Nils and Tyler who each have scored double figures in both games. DJ won the last game almost single-handedly, but Nils and Tyler deserve some credit for the win in both games.

What the hell were you watching?
When I wrote that, I was thinking about UCF vs Oregon State and Nebraska vs Arizona State as well as some other 'highlights' of other games. Both UCF and Nebraska looked good their last game. I doubt either will make the final---but you never know!!! :)

On this morning's Marc Daniels (He was broadcasting from vegas) radio show he mentioned Darius Johnson's last shot. It was meaningless with just a second or two to go. Didn't matter about point spread, or anything. When I saw it last night I thought as well it wasn't called for. While everyone was sitting to wait for the clock to countdown to zero, game in hand, Darius went towards the basket and laid an easy, uncontested layup in to win by 8. Marc said, and I do remember seeing the hand shake, Cincy coach stopped DJ and told him, "he's bigger than that". Marc then said, to the radio listener and the person he was talking to about when Cincy beat UCF at home this year, that towards the end when the game was decided for Cincy already they similarly had two alley oop dunks and thus making the Cincy coach a hypocrite.

That was Darius Johnson's first win against Cincy after losing 5 straight times to them in 4 years. Now, I'm glad he did that layup.

Check that last micro second layup and Check the handshake afterwards. Some words exchanged. I'd like to hear that convo! Anybody good at lip reading?

Cincy coach seems mad. Not one compliment or even mention on how good UCF played and whooped them. Sore losers with no class.

A little insight on Wes Miller. He comes from a very rich family. His dad is a big car dealer. He went to North Carolina and got on the team through the influence of his dad with Roy Williams.
Everything has been handed to him for the most part. He went to expensive prep schools through North Carolina n Pennsylvania and he didn’t really play there. It’s good to have money!

UCF Men's Basketball College Basketball Crown Semifinal Press Conference - April 4, 2025

Johnny's an individual player's coach (for some players like Hall) but has fallen short in developing a top notch basketball program at UCF. He cares about his athletes but not so much about his program. For example, Hall was a very good scorer, an average rebounder, but lousy on distributing the ball and playing D. The whole season that was true. But Johnny and his staff really didn't work with him to improve on his deficiencies. Johnny consistently ran plays for Hall to score but not to set up his teammates (how many alley oops to Thiam or passes to open guys at the 3-point line did he facilitate?). I can count 'em on one hand. And he had 2 guys on the bench who seldom got the chance to play but when they finally did, we find out they're good team players. So, he highlights the individuals yet, if we win this tournament, it's going to be with a bunch of team guys. If Johnny is smart (and the jury's out), he'll learn a lesson from this tournament.

He was embarrassed by losing to a team that they beat easily (with the leading scorer in the B12 playing). But, in truth, it was easy for them to defend UCF when Hall was here (focus on defending 1 guy). Not so easy to play D against a team of 5 who passed the ball to the open guy.

Agree with the take on Hall, and was why I wasn’t too upset with losing him. While he had the potential to take over games offensively, he was not the well rounded player that we need to use the NIL on right now

his handles are too loose to be a wing in the NBA, nor is he quick enough. so he needs to make that money now.
Agreed. His whole attitude that he advertises himself as a “big guard” just seems like immaturity to me.

He’s a much better long-term prospect if he focuses on becoming a small-ball power forward. He’s an excellent rebounder, and he does have the ability to dribble-drive against bigger defenders (and drift out to the perimeter).

But he is no guard. And his defensive attention/feel is a mess.

Win or lose at least we got back to playing good, team basketball. Still scratch my head st tye abysmal way we played in the second half of conference play.

Let's have a Nebraska vs UCF final tomorrow!!! 👍
Who would have predicted this final at the start?

UCF led the whole damn game but it looked like they were going to screw the pooch down the stretch. Then they made an amazing comeback to take it to OT down 2 scores with 19 seconds left. But in OT, they dominated. Johnson ended up with 42 points!

I'll be cheering for the Huskers tomorrow. But I won't be pissed if UCF wins it. :)
