UConn gameday experience

Miserable day for football. It rained like crazy for hours prior to the game, but the rain let up for the 1st 3 quarters. It rained during the entire 4th quarter. It was in the 40's and windy, too. The field was wet and slippery.

Those UCF kids from Florida were constantly fighting for space around the 2 portable heaters they had. It was funny.

UCF's top defensive lineman, Pittman was on crutches and did not suit up. SF never talks about injuries so nobody knows what it is. Another starting UCF defensive lineman, the freshman Trysten Hill, injured his leg in the 1st quarter and it took about 5 minutes to get him off the field. He looked like he was in a great deal of pain, but thankfully he returned to the game after halftime. Teams like UCF with limited depth can not afford to lose starters.

The UConn stadium is very fan friendly. Small stadiums have small sections (20 seats per row) and it is easy to go to and from your seats. Seemed like UConn fans treat football games sort of like a social event. They are not rabid football fans. They serve beer at the games and everybody has a good time.

I met the grandmother of a freshman player on UCF's team...a young linebacker (Evans) from New Orleans. She told me that when Coach Frost and his buddies came to Louisiana to recruit her grandson she told them that she would "beat their asses" if her grandson got in any trouble in Orlando. She said that Scott's crew keeps her grandson very busy with schoolwork and practice, and they pretty much account for his whereabouts 24/7, so she is happy.

UConn's stadium is not located on the UConn Campus. It is in an older residential area in East Harford. They have large open fields surrounding the stadium for parking, so parking was very convenient. Stadium is just a half mile from an exit on Interstate 84, so it was very easy to find. Traffic before and after the game was not bad at all.

Saw something in that game I had never seen before. A UConn field goal attempt hit the sidebar and bounced back into a UCF player's hands. He caught the ball in the air and ran it for a touchdown, but it was ruled a dead play.

On UConn's last 2 drives they got down to UCF's 15 yard line, but they needed a touchdown and a 2 point conversion to tie, and they couldn't quite get it in the end zone. It was a close game.

Great stuff! Thanks!! I'll make sure this is one of the few games I'll have to miss every other year. I don't mind the rain, but when it's cold, it's pretty miserable. Hope Pittman is OK. Maybe he got hurt in practice. Was he in a cast or just on crutches? Hill seems nearly indestructible. Many thought he would be out for the year, let alone come back in to play.

No cast that I could see. Just crutches. He had sweats on so I could not see if he had a brace on his knee or a cast of any type. No boot on his foot. He was actively involved talking to his teammates throughout the game. He is a team leader.

The players did not have rain coats or ponchos. I'll bet they got wet and cold. I hope none of them get sick. Maybe they had waterproof, yet breathable under garments.

It was a rough environment to play in but the UCF players fought very hard and came out with a win. They fell behind in the 1st quarter but they never gave up. It was good to see.

There was a decent contingent of UCF fans there. They had their own section. They were a bit more vocal than the UConn fans. I got a seat amongst the UConn fans on the 40 yard line 6 rows up on the UCF side. It only cost $60. My seat had a seat back. I was quite comfortable and warm in my layers and rain gear.

The grandmother from New Orleans did not know how to dress for Connecticut. She looked pretty cold and miserable. Her jacket did not look waterproof. But she said she is learning how to dress for these odd UCF northern venues.

Like me, the grandmother (Renee) was also very upset when UCF played a prevent defense in the final minute of the Temple game. I had to mention that. I hate the prevent defense unless it is an obvious Hail Mary situation.

With 30 seconds left in a game, and 70 yards to go with no time outs, the QB's arm is about the only thing that can win the game. Why not put pressure on the QB? He is the most dangerous guy. Overload one side of the D-line with Shaquel Griffin on the end ( 4 linemen instead of 3) and tell him to get after the QB. He is good at that.

Great road trip summary. I enjoyed all the details. How much were the beers?

Glad you got to see a WIN!

Also was cool to see UCF players rush over to the main UCF Fan section after the game and thank all of the Knight Fans for their support, especially in non-Florida friendly weather.

PS. Both TV and Radio Coverage noted that Pittman got hurt (ankle) during pre-game warm-ups....I really hope he can get a quick recovery as UCF will need him to help chase Houston QB Ward this weekend.

We met the Boston/NJ alumni at a parking lot right outside the stadium then caravaned in so we could park together. I want to say we were 6-8 cars deep. The group got a lot larger as the morning progressed though. Really good atmosphere, despite the weather. I had met a few alumni last year at the Temple game so it was cool seeing familiar faces. We got a group pic and it's posted somewhere on Facebook. I know I was able to tag myself on it.

UConn's stadium is tiny and old. The open spaces the OP talks about happen to be the air strips where they tested the engines, as the stadium sits on an old factory/air strip for Pratt & Whittney. And, I agree, fans were not rabid at all. Most of them left at halftime.

We sat in front of the Griffin twins family. They were super nice and it was really cool seeing the twins come up in the stands after the game to see their parents. Our small group was loud, louder than all the UConn fans most of the game. Talking to a few of them on our way to the stadium, they think the rivalry trophy is a joke and that Diaco is an idiot for doing that.

Overall fun day despite the weather, especially because we got the W.

UCF lost two close games this year. It was good to see them win a close game for a change. After falling behind 13-0 in that foreign weather that UCF kids are not used to, I was very impressed with how they fought back and won the game.

I had a blast! drove up from NYC.

Beers were $8. I didn't have the food, but it smelled good.

Their stadium really isn't bad. Simple, but packs in nicely for a good game.

I chatted with the Griffin Twins' mom for a bit. Sometime in the first half she walked over from her seat to the stands right behind the bench, called the twins over and gave them a verbal tongue lashing for playing like shit lol. It was awesome! My guess is she is the reason the defense tightened up and played well in the second half.

Rain and cold really did suck, but the game was exciting enough to have you forget about it for a bit.

UCF fans were definitely loud.

Best moment was having the players come to the UCF section and show us love for coming out and being out. Twitter

All in all, loved the experience. Glad I did it. That's my 3rd game this year (Michigan, homecoming, and UConn). Trying for a 4th.

Road games are a blast in their own special way.
