5 ranked teams today lost to unranked teams. By far the biggest upset of the day was clearly unranked G5 Old Dominion beating #12 Va Tech by 2 touchdowns. Keep in mind that Old Dominion lost by 50 to Liberty this season.

Today was definitely upset Saturday but it was almost an epic upset Saturday. 4 other top 25 teams barely beat weak unranked G5 opponents with many of them needing late fourth-quarter comebacks and overtime to pull out the victories. We came really close to having 9 top 25 teams lose today, 8 of them to unranked teams and 1 to a team ranked 13 spots lower.

Still 5 losses by ranked team to unranked teams is a big deal and shows how overated many of these P5 teams are.

One thing to note is the fact that none of the ranked teams who lost to unranked teams today and many of the ranked teams who had very close calls against unranked teams have any quality wins against ranked teams, so it’s not like their SOS is substantially better than UCF’s at this point in the season.

#5 overated Oklahoma needed OT to be unranked Army who hasn’t beaten a ranked opponent since 1972 (45 straight losses).

#6 overated LSU struggled to beat weak G5 La Tech, only up by 3 in the 4th.

#7 overated Stanford needed a late comeback and collapse by Oregon to get to overtime, where Stanfoed pulled out the win vs #20 Oregon.

#18 Wisconsin needed last minute heroics to recapture the lead and beat unranked Iowa

#10 overated Washington only beat unranked ASU by only 7

After today’s losses by ranked team ahead of us, we should move up 3 spots in the AP from 16 to 13 and 5 spots in the Coaches poll from 18 to 13.

I don’t think any teams currently ranked behind us did enough this week to jump ahead of us.

If we beat Pitt handily as we should, we have an outside chance to crack the top 10 next Sunday with some help from other teams ahead of us. If not next weekend, we should definitely make the top 10 if beat SMU and Memphis the following 2 weeks. Not just because of the next 3 wins, but also because there are sure to be enough teams ranked ahead us who lose over the next 3 weeks to help us move up to 10th or better by mid October at the latest, as long as we keep winning .
