Week 1 Depth Chart from UCF Football

Majority of the transfers are backups, didn’t see that coming (Wilson, Patterson, Kight. Gamage not even in 2 deep).
Agree Wilson, Patterson are the biggest surprises but will get a bunch of reps. Didn’t some media have Patterson going in 1st round of nfl draft?

I hope that's a good thing. The majority of the starters are experienced seniors. That makes the 2024 recruiting class very important to reload.

Could there be some gamesmanship going on here from Gus & Co.?

For instance, Gammage did a recent interview and he seemed upbeat like he was excited and slated to be involved with playing.

Very surprising in some parts. The DB and WR 2 deep especially. Never saw Bula not being a C, that was interesting also. Maybe just appeasing returning players while eventually making the transfers earn it?

This is the week 1 depth, Gus said he wouldn't be surprised if this changes during the season.

Everything is going to come down to whether JRP can move the chains on 3rd down with his arm.

If he can, sky's the limit with this offense. It's deep and will be fast. We will win 9-10 if JRP can complete 70% of his passes against good competition.

If JRP is the same as last year, I would be happy with 6 wins.

Gus usually rolls with returning starters to open the season. No surprise there.

Here is what I do see ...

UCF doesn't have an answer at left guard, so it moved a four-year center over to guard to put the five best linemen (four transfers) on the field. Bula is nasty but incredibly undersized for the position. H*ll he is small for a center. He will need to play with perfect technique.

Really surprised to see Trent Whittemore
a co-starter with Kobi Hudson. That's a head scratcher for me, save the fact that Hudson has dropped more 'catchable' balls than the rest of the receiving corps combined. It is sad to see UCF have to put a possession receiver in that spot.

Putting Mask at Star is a stroke of freaking genius. He is a great tackler, has great footwork, and excellent coverage skills. He is just slow. I think he will be a fixture at the No. 3 corner spot. Nikai to free safety is not just a short term move, either. I see it as permanent. Moving Bullard into the box at strong safety is true apparently as well. I think he will be a great fit there too. I love most of the secondary. The corner spots are still suspect.

Agree that Bula at guard is puzzling from a height standpoint. Can only assume that it is an experiment to see if he and Metcalf can both be on the field. I also thought Kight would be a starter.

That UCF O-Line is food. FOOD. Boys wasted Matt Lee’s money in that Bama transfer who is not very good at playing football.

The Fresno center is starting at Guard for UCF and TW is starting at outside WR. The trolls literally write themselves.

Odd for a player with his experience and production at the FBS level. 52 catches for 774 yards and 6 TDs at Marshall last season. Every time his name came up during the pressers they kept saying something like he needed to "get into shape." IDK

Whittemore is the only Grant Heard recruit or transfer on the 2 deep.

Great to see Quadric Bullard listed as a starter. He was sorely missed on the field the last handful of games last season. An experienced carryover back there in an otherwise revamped secondary is a good thing for sure.

A couple of guys not listed at all on the depth chart has me wondering about their health coming out of fall camp. One would think Jarvis Ware (S), Kam Moore (LB), and Chauncey Magwood (WR) would at least be listed as “ORs” on the two-deep. At least with Gammage not listed, we kind of heard that he needed some time (playbook, conditioning) coming in a bit late.

He may play different guys in game 1 than game 2. Whether he wants to appear not to give transfers PT right away or could possibly be some disciplinary reasons they won’t release.

I haven't been this excited about the DL in a very long time. I pray Lee lives up to the offseason hype about him being in great shape. If he does that unit is going to be excellent.

Did I miss anything about Kam Moore? Even with some of the new arrivals I half expected him to at least make a no.2 spot, seeing as he had good amounts of playing time last year.

I'd echo the sentiments on the WRs and OL.

Very excited for Jarrad Baker to make it on the chart, I hope this kid shines when he gets his opportunities.

And I look forward to a three-headed monster of Harvey-Richardson-McDonald.

Richardson and Bowman returning kickoffs. This could be a sneaky good part of the team.
Absolutely. They're going to be threats at every kickoff.

Good points.Ml

Ware is injury prone. Kam Moore is undersized and not great. I think he played out of necessity last year. Magwood is probably a suspension.

Did I miss something or was it expected that Martinez would move to Safety? He played nickel most of last year IIRC.
He has reshaped his body. He does have qualities of a good free safety. Many thought he would down in the box. It is kind of surprising. I anticipate it will be a pleasant surprise when the smoke clears.

But what about TJ Bullard, he's smaller though right?
Fair point.

This will sound like a copout, but it isn't. Some guys show up developed. Some don't. Some guys have an understanding of the expectations. Some don't. Some have their minds right in the offseason. Some get distracted.

And in some cases (especially depth chart time) some guys show out in a scrimmage or two. I think Bullard may have shown out in a scrimmage.

(This is a shot in the dark.)

It is hard to explain Bula at left guard outside of JRP has a better relationship and is more comfortable with Metcalf at center. I presumed Metcalf would get a look at left guard.

Bula next to Tylan Grable ...

What are your insights on JRP, will he be able to convert more passes? From what I saw last year, biggest issue is JRP had a low conversion rate and we couldn't move the chain on 3rd. If JRP can throw 70%, we should easily average 30-40 ppg, no?

Less than 10 QBs that had a qualifying amount of passing attempts did that in 2022.

UCF as a whole had to be ahead of the chains to have a chance to be successful. If the Knights didn't average good gains on first down running the football, they got into third and long situations. JRP didn't play well in obvious passing situations.

JRP struggled to stay healthy last year because he tried to be Capitan America when he should have been Hawkeye. His weaknesses were he didn't know the offense, didn't trust his reads, didn't work through his progressions, didn't trust the pocket, and didn't always put the ball in the right location.

It isn't a stretch to say he tried to put the team on his back. Just watch his highlights. Notice the number of plays he makes that don't involve others.

I think UCF will average 30-40 because of or in spite of JRP. UCF will put up points.

Yes, Daunte held the all-time NCAA single season completion percentage for over 10. years at 73.6% so even 70% is amazing. He is still 6th on the all time list.

Martinez reminds me of Asante Samuel as a freshman. Asante was always around the ball and making big plays as a true freshman. Asante was a baller and Martinez will also be a stud. I think Martinez has excellent range playing safety (as did Asante) and will have several interceptions this year.

Yeah…sure he does. A small dude that runs a 4.9 forty. Lol…range?

Concerned that Water Yates is a starting LB. Last year he could not make an open field tackle if his life depended on it. Hopefully he is vastly improved.
