The Wall Street Journal is reporting -- and Trump confirmed in today's virus presser -- that his Administration is seriously considering a bailout of billions of dollars to airlines, hotels, and the cruise industry.

I find it fascinating how much the government worries about the big guys when sh*t hits the fan. All of our big Capitalists (with a big C) Congressmen suddenly morph into Bernie clones and want to give away our money to their favorite donors when times turn tough.

The cruise industry was specifically mentioned. My wife and I are cruisers but my response to such talk is: WTF???!? Here's a few of the reasons why such talk is a real head-scratcher to me:
  1. While these cruise companies pretend to be American, they aren't. They are all registered outside the U.S. and do not pay U.S. taxes.
  2. A very small percentage of their employees are American.
  3. The transportation services they provide are not critical to the operations of our country.
So I'd love for someone to explain to me why in the world they are being seriously considered for a bailout?

In fact, why are any of them worthy of a bailout? In the grand ole Capitalist tradition, shouldn't they be talking to their banks about crisis loans to get back on their feet?

The cruise industry wont be bailed out by us. The IMF might. We will bailout Boeing, Raytheon, Citi, chase, and BOA, because they are integral to the federal government and tax receipts. It's as short sighted as what we did in 2009 but its gonna happen.

The Wall Street Journal article -- as well as Trump himself at his morning corona virus presser -- specifically mentioned the cruise industry.

I hope you're right but I found it bizarre that it was even mentioned as a bailout beneficiary.
Theres no chance that anybody in his administration would go along with it.

It’s not a bailout. It’s a loan that will be paid back

these companies (airline, cruise, etc) require a lot of capital and are leveraged accordingly. They are good companies with a liquidity problem.

1st, we should not be bailing out the cruise industry that HQ off shore.

2nd, maybe it's time to nationalize the airlines like other countries. Whenever I travel abroad Australia, Canada, Europe, Middle East it costs $90-120 to fly from city to city round trip and I get WAY better service, seat size and food. They aren't good companies. I get treated like sh*t here.

Color me shocked to find that the people who whined with bitchy hysterics for Trump to shut everything down and close the economy over COVID19 are the same ones going into bitchy hysterics over the idea that maybe, just maybe, businesses that were forced into closure BY the government may need financial assistance.

Just hilarious. You can tell the people who only act concerned about COVID19 by the way they continue spinning every single thing into petty, sham partisan attack points.

Some of them simply don’t have anymore credibility, because it’s just a constant criticism of Trump no matter what. There’s NOTHING that he could do that wouldn’t get criticized

This thread is about WH talk of a bailout for the airlines, hotels, and the cruise industry. I haven't heard about any government-forced shutdowns. Hell, the cruise industry are all off-shore operations.

BUT WAIT A MINUTE! ...THAT"S SOCIALISM!!! LOL :)

Again today Trump made a point of saying we need to bail out the cruise line industry. He must own serious stock in them.

In today's Presser, Trump mentioned an offer of ship assistance from the owner/CEO of Carnival Cruises who is a friend of his.

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Trump's been talking bailouts for the CRUISE LINES of all the damn businesses in crisis when
  1. NONE of them are US businesses;
  2. a SMALL PERCENT of their employees are American; and
  3. their transportation is not mission-critical for our country.

Carnival offers assistance: shukster creates a conspiracy theory as opposed to being glad that companies are willing to help.

agree 1000%

You've already made a big point of saying a bailout to the cruise lines won't happen.

So when it does, I'm sure you'll be able to provide us all with a good, rationale explanation for why.

If that happens there is no way in hell I can rationalize it. Nobody could.

Most cruise lines dont pay US taxes because they are headquartered out of other countries (obviously to avoid taxes). For all intensive purposes they are foreign companies and do not deserve US tax payers to bail them out.

ETA: I see someone already brought this up.

These are decent points. Except that they hire a good number of US persons and they employ secondary businesses in their home ports. It’s a lot more than a “small percentage”. They also employ lawyers, as firms, consultants, pay regulatory fees, etc. in the US. As usual, it’s not as simple as you want to portray it.

I would be shocked if the percentage of Americans hired by these cruise lines is over 5%.
...and they employ secondary businesses in their home ports.
There are a lot of secondary U.S. businesses that are involved but they aren't owned by the cruise lines. The cruise lines DO own a lot of secondary businesses in their ports of call, but the vast majority of them are outside of the U.S.
As usual, it’s not as simple as you want to portray it.
That may be true but the notion that a bailout of the cruise industry will help out 'all the little guys' isn't a simple or accurate explanation either.

i seriously hope we dont bail out the cruise industry. none of them sail under the american flag. they should ask their "parent" governments for help instead.

Trump wants to help his buddies. He keeps mentioning that we need to bail them out.
i will not be happy about it if they do this. i heard they passed something last night but havent checked. omg i disagree with trump on something?!?!?!
