Do you understand that dictionaries often times use the colloquial usage of a word than the actual meaning?

This is particularly prevalent in political rhetoric. In the US, people say "democracy." The colloquial usage has changed the dictionary definition from "a system of governance where each member votes on each topic" to "a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives". The New definition is actually the definition of a Republic.
