Coach Rooney has had 7 years and still has not developed a great pitching staff.

Don't players graduate and new players come in? It's not like we have 7 year veteran starters here. It's like saying why hasn't GOL developed a good O-line in football in 10 years.

I have been concerned with the pitching this year too. The only thing that gave me confidence was knowing that we perform well on the weekend series. Before Cincinnati we were 18-3 on the weekend! We won the tourney we played in, won the Ole Miss and Houston series, and haven't lost a series (until this weekend). Our 3 losses on the weekends were 4-3, 7-6, 8-5. Pretty close games but I believe that pitching lost 2 of them.

We struggle during the week because we don't pitch our top-3 guys. So I expect it to be a slug-fest and lose some. I wish we were "deeper" with our arms but we aren't.

"What is up with our baseball team? The answer is.... we are a top 10-15 team this year! When was the last time that we were a top-10 team?

It sucks losing, but with a long season, we are bound to lose 1 weekend series... let's hope we fight back.

I'm glad we're ranked, but we've been ranked numerous times in our baseball history. Winning a Regional alone would bring the program to a new level. I'd like us to get to Omaha and win the whole damn thing, but I admit that our pitching depth is a bit suspect right now. Hopefully, I'm wrong about the depth. It's nice to be ranked, but it won't mean jack squat if we don't do more than we already have.

We have three decent to good pitchers that had been our weekend starters. That's it. We have no bullpen to speak of and we have no really good midweek starter.

What that means is that you have to have very good outings from your best three pitchers in a regional so that they pitch all or most of their three starts and we win all three of the games they pitch. Otherwise the chances of winning a regional are very slim.

It doesn't help that our hitting has gone from on fire to lukewarm...but pitching will be our downfall this year unless something changes.

I agree with the comment about players leaving. BUT teams that are constantly rated in top 10 overcome this. Coach R is our pitching coach too (which is a big mistake ) and he was hired because he was a winner. NOT A BIG TIME WINNER YET.

I post when I am concerned

we just lost 2 of 3 to the weakest team in our conference. That is an indicator!! I have seen this for several years. Coach R is the pitching coach and I think his dual role does not give him time to work on his pitching staff. Seldom has UCF had a strong staff. This year we are being carried by a strong offense. Coach needs to hire pitching coach. But his ego would never let him do that. I think his ego is his weakness. It must be tough to play for him.

Re: I post when I am concerned

I call it the Little Napoleon Complex. You can see it when TR struts to the mound, chest out and head bobbing. I agree he would be better served by having a separate pitching coach which would allow him to spend more time on game management. But...that won't happen. Not sure how staff budgets work. Maybe there is no money for a pitching coach. Plenty of time to win more conference games. Its not like we are getting blown out. And yes, from what I hear it is tough to play for him.

Up until this weekend, our offense has pretty much carried the team. But our bats were shut down the entire week going back to FAU. Baseball is a funny game in that hitting slumps seem to be contagious. Cincinnati had a team ERA of over 6.00 heading into this weekend, yet our stellar offense was completely stifled. Yeah, the weather sucked much of the time, but it wasn't freezing cold, and they've had to deal with crappy weather many times this season. Can't really blame this weekend on the pitching too much. The way we've been swinging the bats, we should have been able to overcome 4 and 5 runs in games 1 and 2. UC's ace who pitched on Friday is a really good pitcher (ERA under 2.00) but their Saturday starter had an ERA of almost 7, and batters were hitting well over .300 on him, yet we could barely touch him. No, this weekend was on the offense, plain and simple. Just gotta hope they can snap out of it. UConn comes in next weekend, and they've been playing pretty well so far. Plus we've got JU Tuesday night, and we need to get one back from them.
