It obviously puts new coaches at a disadvantage. Why do they have to wait until the middle of January to make visits?

Many campuses are basically closed till 2nd week of Jan,...which wouldn't benefit recruits on official visits who get to meet with academic advisors, tour dorms, etc...

UCF's doesn't start classes for Spring semester till Monday, Jan 11th...and the first official visit weekend Jan 15-17.

Good point but why can't the coaches visit recruits?

Even coaches need a break during the holidays...and since most HS close for at least 2 weeks for the holidays (families take vacations and/or have relatives in town to enjoy the holidays, parent(s) off from work etc...), NCAA also wants to give the HS kids a "break" too from the constant onslaught of recruiting...so best break is to have during the holidays.
