Why do people hold up 3 fingers on third down and not make noise?

Last week I was in 233 and it was kinda quiet. In 229 it was pretty loud today though.

It's too help those who cant hear know it's 3rd down. Sometimes the scoreboard messes up. Nice thing to do...

I was there in the cabana and people everywhere had a drink in one hand and three fingers in the air with the other. Put your drink down and clap or bang something.
