Which four teams would the Big 12 want from the ACC?

With Pitt and UCF renewing our series, it got me thinking:

Assuming the Big Ten and SEC eventually grab Clemson, FSU, and UNC from the ACC once they reach an agreement, what four teams would the Big 12 want to poach the most? A few thoughts from a fan of an ACC school:

• Louisville, Pitt, and Virginia Tech would all provide traveling partners to the Big 12’s east coast schools and bring historic rivalries in-house
• Miami could develop a fun rivalry with the Knights should they not receive an invitation to the P2
• Would the Big 12 consider the ACC’s private basketball schools (Duke, Cuse) or west coast schools (Cal, Stanford)?

I would want Pitt, Louisville, GT and Miami. But NC State wouldn’t be a bad option either. Agreed with you on GT, that one should be a no brainer. I don’t get the appeal of VT, personally.

Id say grab six and make two -11 team divisions East and West. 10 game conference schedule + 2 non conference.

In order of preference:

Louisville
Georgia Tech
Virginia Tech
NCSU
Miami
Pitt
I don’t hate that. So many pundits speculating Miami to the Big12 but I kind of never saw it. I would think they are a big enough brand with their AAU “requirement” and in the FL market that they could go to the Big10. If Georgia Tech could ever get their shit together (sports), i could see them to the Big10 to be an outside option as well. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think Miami is in a weird spot. On paper, they’re a great fit; large market, strong football brand, and the AAU affiliation. However, the two biggest things going against them are:

1. They’re a small-ish private school with average TV ratings and too small of an alumni base for the Big Ten’s liking, who’d rather enter the southeast market with FSU
2. The SEC already has a presence in Florida and wouldn’t gain anything by adding Miami

Suddenly, it makes sense why they’d be an option for the Big 12. As a Pitt fan, I selfishly hope the league invites us, Louisville, Miami, and Virginia Tech because of our shared conference history.

In this scenario I see you don't have Virginia going B10. I think Virginia, Pitt, Va Tech, NC State, Miami and Louisville are so similar it is hard to choose. I don't follow the ACC close enough to see a significant difference between the six to seven best options to choose from.

I think expanding to 20 is ideal. Two 10 team divisions.

Despite the arrogance of their fans who love to live in their distant past accomplishments, we need Miami...being way down here in the SE corner of the country with no other conference school nearby. Miami does have good history (even if it is ancient history) in football and baseball and has been pretty good in basketball recently. They still have some people willing to throw money around in an attempt to be good.

I am not sure which school brings a larger fan base and potential, Virginia or Va Tech, but take just one of those two.

So, it's between Pitt, Louisville and NC State for the last two spots.

What it really comes down to is which schools do ESPN and/or FOX want to pay the most money for.

Personally, I think we should scoop up anyone not picked up for SEC OR BIG. All the leftovers are deserving of a spot and we will solidify a P3 spot.

Ideally I’d agree with this, and I’m sure you all appreciate this perspective as a school who was once on the outside looking in.

I liked the idea of the ACC, Big 12, Pac-2, and UConn came together and formed a 32-team mega conference. This would ensure two things:

1. The major TV networks and streaming services couldn’t ignore, meaning we could at least maintain our current revenue
2. The Big Ten and SEC couldn’t successfully split off because we’d be too big to ignore

Based strictly on financial data, I am considering (Tier 1s) Virginia, FSU, Clemson, Louisville, North Carolina, (Tier 2s) Miami, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, and (Tier 3s) Oregon State and Washington State with Memphis as the first alternate.

Any additional programs will lower devalue the league.

Can’t really go wrong with any of these options. I just wouldn’t take ALL, like Wake/Syracuse/BC are kind of like Oregon St/Washington St. I don’t get the appeal of Virginia either outside of being a great academic institution.

Miami, GT, Louisville and Pitt.

with those 4, UCF, WVU and Cincy are no longer isolated.
Doubt it but kind of like it. UM and GT would be great for UCF, Pitt and UL great for cincy/WV. Backyard brawl would be great for the B12.and if any 2 of VT, NC state and Duke available go to 22.

Pitt football is going G5. No money, no support…literally trash. Even their outgoing transfers say that it’s a hopeless program long bereft of relevance.

Don’t pile Miami with your garbage program. Dayon Hayes exposed you losers.Miami is not going to the sorry Big 12. Stay in your own lane.

Lets compare Pitt and Miami with facts.

Pitt is a Major Research University with annual Research Expenditures of $1.25 Billion per year (Ranked #16) and Miami is a Research University with annual Research Expenditures of $0.439 Billion per year (Ranked #69).

US News 2024 "Best Global Universities" has Pitt ranked #45 and Miami ranked #253. Research Prowess and Research Expenditures make up an important criteria for this Global Ranking.

US News 2024 "Americas Best Graduate Schools" has Pitt Health Professions ALL Ranked in the Top 20.
Pitt Medical School Ranked #13 in the Nation.

Pitt enjoys major financial support from Alums, Industry and Friends who have contributed to the University.
This financial support has helped Pitt amass an Endowment of $5.5 Billion while Miami has an Endowment of $1.37 Billion.

By the way in the last four years (2021(#6), 2022(#2), 2023 (#6) and 2024 (#3)) Pitt has had 17 players Drafted (7 Rounds) by the NFL. How many Miami players were drafted by the NFL (7 Rounds) in the last 4 years.

Pitt now has 10 Players in the NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame with Darrelle Revis induction in 2023.
Pitt now has 25 Players in the NCAA College Football Hall of Fame.

How many players does Miami have in these two organizations.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

If FSU and Clemson would leave they would probably be replaced with Washington State and Oregon State.

The ACC then would have a western quad like the B1G.

B1G: UCLA, USC, Washington, Oregon.
ACC: Stanford, Cal, Washington State, Oregon State.

Don't care if they leave early but would want them to leave by giving money (GOR settlement) to the ACC.

If either or both schools bolt to the B1G they would have to contend with playing Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, USC, UCLA, Washington etc. Lets see how many opportunities they will have playing for National Championships in the future.

The ACC is not going away because they are too big and concentrated in large population states with their own network ACCN. Back filling would occur.

I see you’ve encountered our resident cancer who metastasizes himself all over every thread. Besides cancer, he also goes by Massengill, for obvious reasons. UCF would love to have Pitt in the XII with us. Glad we scheduled some additional contests with the Panthers, friend.

Hey Lex…how about you post about something you know which is nothing.

Louisville, Georgia Tech, miami……

Then it is kind of a pick ‘em between like an NC St and Duke

Nothing against Pitt, but I would be in favor of building a strong Southeast pod of teams.

Pitt sounds glamorous and all but don't they play at "Heinz Field", off-campus, in front of no one?....kinda like UM?

I'd prefer schools with hearty, festive on-campus environments.

I agree with most saying Louisville (Cincinnati) , GT, and Miami (closer to us) being the obvious ones. I think we need to include Pitt in that group because of West Virginia. They have been on an island in the big 12 for a long time. Giving them thier nextdoor neighbor rival if the conference has a chance seems like the right thing to do?

Actually both Pitt and the Steelers play at Acrisure Stadium (formally Heinz Field) and lets be clear the Steelers don't own the Stadium. They negotiate terms with the Pittsburgh Stadium Authority like Pitt. Additionally, the Steelers practice at a facility owned by UPMC. Pitt and Steeler practice facilities are next door to each other.

Pitt uses Acrisure Stadium 7 times a year (28hours) and is 3.5 miles from campus.

Acrisure Stadium and PNC Park are both in the revitalized North Shore area which has numerous new Hotels, Restaurants, Bars, Rivers Casino, Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Science Center all within walking distance of Acrisure. The UCF fans coming up for the game will be surprised how great the area is for pre and post game activity.

If you can, try to get Club Seats, there is nothing better than watching a football game in an NFL Stadium with Club Seating.

Pitt would rather spend its financial resourses on Research Facilities that can be used 24/7 with a great ROI.

Example, Penn State will be investing $750 million on upgrades to Beaver Stadium a football facility that will be used 7 times a year (maybe 28 hours total). Pitt is investing $2.0 Billion dollar on a State of the Art 17 Story Hospital Facility (Presbyterian Tower) on our Oakland Campus that will be used 24/7 with expanded research activity.

These are the reasons Pitt is ranked #45 Global University in the World by US News and Penn State is ranked #84.

That’s why PSU is relevant in college football and Pitt isn’t though. You either want to be relevant in sports or you don’t.

What do guys that played decades ago have to do with program relevance today? That reads exactly like a miami or Nebraska post. Like it or not, playing in a rental stadium is a minus in 2024.

Gus Malzahn has been at UCF for three full years. They had a total of three guys drafted in three years and one of them never played a down for Gus Malzahn.

UCF was in the AAC for ten years and at the Big 12 one year. During that time UCF has a losing record against P5 and a losing record against the ACC.

Really the only stats that matter in realignment.

Atlanta - 7th largest media market

Washington DC -9th largest Media Market

Miami - 18th largest media market

Raleigh-Durham- 22nd largest media market

As such the logical choices would be Miami, GT, Virginia and NC State/Duke. Pitt may get in because of the insistence of West Virginia and the historic rivalry but in reality the media markets will control and Pittsburgh is a dying media market. (losing market share every year)

the Big1G took Rutgers and Maryland for their market share, not because they have great research facilities, HOF players, etc.

and to think other ACC schools won't jump at the chance to join then Big1G, SEC or Big 12 which will/are all paying out more money after Florida State, Clemson and NC bolt is ludicrous. ACC won't just backfill and get the same marketing leverage, they will basically get P5 money and watch the other 3 conferences sail away.

How about listing how many people left Pittsburgh v. how many new people are coming to Orlando and the surrounding area.

And seriously Pitt v. Penn State ....Penn State leads the all-time series against Pittsburgh 53–43–4, with 59–0 being Penn State's largest victory and 14 being Pittsburgh's largest victory. The two teams have played 100 times, with Penn State winning each of the last three matchups. If you look at recent history since 1970 it's even worse with Pitt at an 8-22 record.

and I like Pitt fans and really hope if there is conference realignment Pitt comes to the Big 12.

Obviously we are new to recruiting at the P4 level, and really don’t care about Penn St. But looks like Pitt isn’t a regular on the national stage with just 1 national championship since 1937.

Seems to be a solid program, hope you can find a home if the ACC breaks up….I just think the B12 may have better options unless the P2 scoops up more than 4 teams.

Actually, the ACC has already started weakening itself taking in 2 bad football programs and a team with no accomplishments in this century for free.

If they lose 6 teams and backfill with Wash St, Ore St, and a couple of G5 programs…..they become a G5 league.

The only reason you are here is because your self esteem is so low you need UCF to accept your claims of Miami dominance...even though Miami's OFF SEASON dominance always evaporates once the actual season starts.
