Big 12 Coaches Talk Anonymously About Conference Foes for 2024

https://athlonsports.com/college-fo...lk-anonymously-about-conference-foes-for-2024

Here is what was said about the Knights:

UCF

“KJ Jefferson was the no-brainer QB transfer of the offseason. He’s going to thrive in [Gus Malzahn’s] system, and there won’t be any adjustment needed from either side."

"[New defensive coordinator] Ted Roof is more of a buddy-hire; he definitely lost his fastball at OU, but Malzahn has had a lot of success at UCF by keeping his guys locked in at all the key coaching positions."

"They’re getting better and better in recruiting, Gus has given them what the administration built for a long time — that real shot at being another power team in the state of Florida. They’ve upped their game in every way."

--30--

For the record, I slightly disagree with the take that Ted Roof was a "buddy hire." Gus needed a guy who could patch up the holes in the run defense without shaking up the defensive staff too much. Roof was a great fit.

The best hire available was Gary Patterson. Bar none. But Roof ain't chopped liver.

Mike Bianchi: UCF fans better start appreciating Gus Malzahn — or else

Bianchi:

"Malzahn has said many times that he plans to retire at UCF, but what happens if he wins nine or 10 games this year and the job opens up in Arkansas, where coach Sam Pittman is unquestionably on the hotseat? Would Malzahn leave UCF to return to a home-state school where he once played?

Maybe he would if he felt UCF’s fan base doesn’t appreciate his efforts. And there certainly is still that unrealistic segment of fans who believe the back-to-back unbeaten seasons in 2017-18 under Scott Frost and Josh Heupel should be the norm instead of the aberration. We saw the culmination of this unrealistic mindset in 2019, when Heupel had the audacity to only win 10 games and was ripped for it by many of those in UCF’s Twitter mafia.

OT: Amazon acquires NBA TV rights

In what will be a landmark move in sports media history, the NBA and Amazon Prime Video have the framework of a deal that will make the streaming service one of the main homes for the league’s games, executives with direct knowledge of the talks told The Athletic.

It is expected that Prime Video’s package will include significant regular season and postseason games, perhaps even some conference finals. The anticipation is that the final contract will be for at least a decade and begin the 2025-2026 season.

ESPN/ABC, as the website Puck reported Thursday, also has a framework of a deal with the expectations that an agreement will be completed. ESPN/ABC are expected to keep the Finals on its networks for the duration of its deals. Like Amazon, ESPN’s new contract is also expected to be at least a decade in length.

All of the details are not finalized yet, but all sides are under the expectations they will get done. The NBA, Amazon and ESPN all declined to comment.

The NBA prefers to have three companies involved in its new deals, but has not ruled out adding a fourth.
The NBA is finishing up nine-year deals that pay it $2.6 billion on average from ESPN and TNT Sports. Those contracts end after the 2024-2025 season.

The advancement in the Amazon and ESPN talks leaves incumbent Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns network TNT Sports, to face off with NBC, owned by Comcast, for the likely last package of games. Warner Bros. Discovery has the right to match deals, but NBC could try to structure an agreement in a way that makes it difficult.

While there is still work to be completed for the final arrangements, the current packages are going to be pruned slightly to create the third partner. In one arrangement, ESPN w
ill cut down from around 100 games to around 80, according to executives briefed on the talks.

REPORT: At 3-3, can the Knights turn things around against Iowa State?

In his recent media availability, UCF Football head coach Gus Malzahn said that the Knights are beginning the second half of their 2024 season.

Sitting at 3-3, UCF has had a rough month of results, including struggles on offense and in the red zone.

The matchup this week against ranked Iowa State presents the next opportunity, but will UCF be able to turn things around?

OT: iPhone Memory

I am upgrading to 16pro from my iPhone 12. My 12 64 GB of memory of which I have used 57GB. The lowest 16pro has 128GB, I am debating if I should spend the extra $100 and get 256GB. The camera on the pro is better and is higher res, so pics will take up more room, apps are getting bigger and I wouldn't mind learning to take more videos. But it still seems like a crazy lot of memory for a phone. My original Leading Edge model D only had 64KB LOL. If Apple would make it easier to offload pics to the cloud without having them sync back to the phone there would not be a problem. But they havve no easy way to tell it not to copy certain pics back on to the phone. I end up having to back up picks onto onedrive instead of icloud so I can delete them from icloud. It is a PITA. So should I cough up the extra $100 for double the memory?

2024 Position Preview - Offensive Line

Key losses - OT Tylan Grable, OG Lokahi Pauole
Top returners - Amari Kight, 6th year (6-7/318, 10 starts at UCF), Marcellus Marshall, SR. (6-5/310, 11 starts at UCF), Adrian Medley, 6th year (6-5/305, 7 starts at UCF)
New additions - Jabari Brooks (6-3/335, transfer from Samford), Wes Dorsey (6-7/315, transfer from WKU), Keegan Smith (6-3/295, transfer from Central Michigan), Waltclaire Flynn (6-2/304, FR.)

If there's one unit I'm concerned about heading into the 2024 season for UCF, then it would have to be their newly made over offensive line group. One reason for the concern is the loss of Pauole, who has been the leader and rock of the room over the past four seasons (48 starts at UCF as an interior lineman from 2019-2023). That's a massive man the Knights can no longer count on to create holes up the middle. UCF also loses Grable, who was a two-year starter (27 starts) at tackle for the Knights.

Kight and Medley are both very experienced sixth-year guys who do return in the trenches. Injuries and depth in front of them are two things that have held both players back in their respective college careers, but both found consistent playing time down the stretch for UCF last season. Marshall, who transferred to UCF from Kent State, was a welcomed addition to the OL room (starting games both inside and outside on the line last year).

To add experience on the line, UCF added a trio of lineman through the portal this past offseason. Brooks was an All-Conference lineman last season at Samford and comes to Orlando with over 30 career starts in the Southern Conference (guard and center). Dorsey started 11 games at tackle last season for Western Kentucky, while Smith started at right guard for Central Michigan in 2023 (15 career starts).

Unlike the defensive line that rotates guys in and out throughout drives, Coach Hand likes to find one cohesive unit to go with (barring injuries of course). Sure, an occasional substitution will need to happen from time to time. But my point is, Coach Hand will have his hands-full (get it?) finding a grouping to go with in camp, while ensuring that they have ample enough time to gel as a cohesive unit.
