UNLV has determined it can’t afford Dan Mullen’s contract lol

here’s why it’s actually ok (but frustrating) UCF pretends to be poor all the time

From Reddit:

UNLV athletic director Erick Harper informed the Board of Regents that the athletic department, which is $26 million to $31 million in debt, can only fund the first two years of football coach Dan Mullen’s five-year, $17.5 million contract. To cover the remaining three years, Harper hopes to raise money through donations and increased football revenue.

UNLV has seen a boost in football interest, selling 970 more season tickets for 2025 and increasing ticket prices, generating $2.5 million in revenue so far. However, regents expressed skepticism about relying on fan-generated revenue long-term. The school may also receive $19 million to $24.8 million from the Mountain West due to conference changes, though this is tied to ongoing litigation.

The department projects spending over $24 million annually on athletics personnel through 2029. Meanwhile, men’s basketball coach Kevin Kruger’s job is uncertain, but firing him before June would require a costly $2.35 million buyout. UNLV is also receiving $3 million from Purdue in installments as part of former football coach Barry Odom’s contract buyout.

UCF Hoops Post-Season Tournament Possible Options and Portal Opening

NIT starts next Tuesday...and it is an option.

Portal opens on March 24th.

FOX Vegas Tourn starts on March 31st (UCF is in a good position to grab a spot there accordingly to Marc).

It will be interesting to see how NIL, Portal Opening on the 3/24 with a tourn starting on 3/31...how many players would skip said tournament>

OT: Cryptocurrency Mega Thread - To the 🌝

I know there's an investing thread, but I wanted to get this into a separate thread to not confuse things. I have a small bit of money that I've been playing around with in the market, and I'd like to take about $1,000 and buy bitcoin and hold for the future. I've been researching online on how to do this but it's very confusing with all of the options. I'd like to get peoples opinions on what is the best wallet and how to pay for it.

I'd like to be able to have an app on my phone and be able to buy a set amount whenever I want. Maybe I'll end up picking up $500 a month or so. Is there any one website or place that's better to use then others? Thanks

***UCF's Malachi Lawrence eyes big year under Scott Frost, Mike Dawson***

Malachi Lawrence, set for his fifth year at UCF, says he's excited about the changes in store under Scott Frost and Company. We caught up with the redshirt senior defensive end after Tuesday's first spring practice.

"(The first practice) was good, just the energy out there was good," Lawrence said. "We got after today."

Are the differences between coaching staffs subtle or extreme?

"They're really subtle, because, like, at the (defensive) end position, it's really just new words that we've got to learn, but it's still the same technique."

He said it's still primarily a four-down front, though they can mix things up at times with a three-down front.

The defensive end, or edge, position group is deep with returners. In addition to Malachi, UCF returns Nyjalik Kelly, Isaiah Nixon and Jamaal Johnson. The newcomer is transfer Sincere Edwards (Pittsburgh), but he doesn't seem like one considering he was a longtime high school commitment to UCF.

"We're expected to lead the defense," Lawrence said. "It's really being out in front, not being behind. Show yourself, and also lead by example."

The group is also looking for an impact year on the field.

"We're trying to lead sacks this year in the Big 12 and the nation," Lawrence said. "We already know what we can do. We just got to put it on tape now, then put it on the field."

The edge position is now led by Mike Dawson.

"Coach Dawson, he's been really great," Lawrence said. "He's been a cool guy, so, just developing over time, just learning him and building a relationship with him, that's really the big goal. I like Coach Dawson."

Lawrence says he aims to be more of a leader, watching what Josh Celiscar did a couple years ago.

"He showed me what to do, how to convey myself, so just watching him, it really helped me to try to become that leader," Lawrence said. "Be vocal, and just don't sit back."

Lawrence, who has combined for 12.5 sacks over the past season, says his goal for his final year is to improve his "football IQ."

"Knowing what's going to happen, knowing what formation they are before the play, so I can play faster."

Asked about the highlight from the first day, Lawrence said he really liked what he saw from safety Phillip Dunnam (FAU transfer).

"(Dunnam) caught two picks today, so that was pretty good," Lawrence said. "And then our pass rush today, Nyjalik (Kelly), he did good with a good pass rush. We were pretty good today, I'll say."

***Paul Rubelt ready for final UCF season under third head coach***

Paul Rubelt, UCF's longest-tenured player in the program, can now say he's been a player under three different head coaches.

The offensive tackle from Germany was recruited by and played one season under Josh Heupel in 2020, the subsequent four years under Gus Malzahn and is set to embark on his final season playing for Scott Frost.

Rubelt described the first spring practice as "different than the last couple years for sure."

"It's new, it's fun, it's always fun to be out there, so I'm ready for the next practice... I feel the energy (from Frost), I like listening to him," Rubelt said. "He gets me going."

This is also his third offensive line coach with Shawn Clark following Herb Hand and Glen Elarbee.

"He's a good guy, he's very personable," Rubelt said of Clark, who most recently was head coach at Appalachian State. "I like him a lot, in the past two, three months I've gotten to know him. I can't wait to further get to know him."

Rubelt said Clark is very big on unit bonding.

"We've been hanging out a lot," Rubelt said. "We go on trips. A couple weeks back we went to the Daytona 500. Last weekend we went on a boating trip, pretty awesome. I like all the guys, they're all nice, like Jakiah (Leftwich), Jabari (Brooks), Cam (Kinnie), LaParka (Langston) and Justin (Royes). They're great guys."

How did he like the Daytona 500?

"It was very American. So, yeah, I loved it. It was awesome."

Final: Miami 3, UCF 2 (postgame interview added, Lovelady thinks could be last game w/ fans)

Off to a 15-2 start and rising in the national polls, UCF Baseball is about to face some of their biggest challenges of the season.

On Wednesday, the No. 12 Knights welcome No. 7 Miami in a midweek contest at John Euliano Park. After hosting Yale this weekend, the homestand continues into next week with No. 11 Florida State visiting Orlando for a Tuesday/Wednesday series and then American Athletic Conference play begins the following weekend with league-favorite East Carolina rolling into town.

The immediate attention centers around Miami, who are 11-4 and coming off a weekend sweep of Pittsburgh.

"It'll be fun," UCF head coach Greg Lovelady said. "Two top-15 ranked teams. Something cool for our program that we've been building towards. Just a cool experience for everybody and a good test at the same time. We've got to continue to grow and get better. You get to play against one of the best teams in the country, but you get to do it at home. We got a chance to do it against Auburn on the road. To get a chance to be at home, hopefully there will be a huge crowd. Hopefully a preview of what's to come later in the year. It'll be exciting.

"Excited to see how our guys handle it. Obviously now that we're not playing out of the weeds anymore like we were at Auburn. They're not going to be sleeping on us. We've got to come ready to play. It'll be interesting to see how our guys handle it."

This matchup has always been a personal one to Lovelady, who played for the Hurricanes from 1998-2001 and won a pair of College World Series in that span.

"It's probably not as personal as it was four years ago or nine years ago when I was at Wright State and got to play them," Lovelady said. "The place means a lot to me. Grew up there, was a huge fan and got to live my childhood dream, doing the things we were able to do in terms of winning National Championships. I root for those guys because they're all my friends still and people that have meant a lot to me, but I've got stuff I want to do here for these kids and this program. So the nostalgia and the excitement of playing them is really kind of faded the more we play and get used to it. It just becomes another team and another opportunity for us to get better."

Jaylyn Whitehead (0.55 ERA) will get the start for UCF, though Lovelady indicated it could be a pitcher-by-committee type night.

"We'll have all hands on deck," Lovelady said. "I can't imagine it'll be like a normal game where he goes five, six, seven innings. It'll probably be short and try to get a bunch of guys in there, mix and match... Hopefully Jayln, Hunter (Patteson), Nick (Gotilla) and Salt (Ryan Saltonstall) will be ready to go and rise up to the occasion and be able to thrwart that left-handed dominant lineup. They're super talented and super experienced. It's a dangerous combination, especially when you mix in the talent they have down there."

Miami is led by Adrian Del Castillo with a team-best .373 batting average. Del Castillo, Anthony Vilar and Alex Toral are tied for the team-lead in RBIs with 15 apiece.

"Miami is not only talented, but experienced," Lovelady said. "Toral and (Jordan) Lala started every game last year. Toral is a three-year starter. Led the ACC in home runs last year. (Raymond) Gil is a three-year starter. Vilar. All these guys have a ton of at-bats under their belts. Even the bottom of the lineup. It's been a very experienced lineup. They've played a lot together. Obviously had some success the last couple years. Left-handed dominant. They could have seven left-handers in the lineup which really is a different look than what most people are accustomed to seeing."
