NEW UCF BASEBALL ARTICLE: Knights Unable to Keep Horns Down/Baylor Preview

Knights Loss Caps Home Conference Slate
The Knights home schedule for 2024 has wrapped up. The inaugural Big 12 home slate has finished up. UCF has already locked in a still to be determined spot within the conference tournament beginning next week. Currently slotted 9th within the conference, there is a chance the Knights can finish as high as 6th before the season finalizes this coming weekend.

ACC advises conference members against scheduling non-Power 5 road games

"While it hasn’t been announced yet, the Wolfpack has pushed a 2025 road game against South Florida to 2029, buying time to negotiate a buyout or for the Bulls to meet the criteria. In future years, N.C. State still has trips to Appalachian State, East Carolina, Troy, Charlotte and Louisiana Tech on its schedule."

while some in here still yearn to play in a fictional stadium of the worst program in FBS over at temple terrace, and worst of all want to associate that disgrace as our rival in 2023 and beyond.

The most unaccomplished Power 5 teams want nothing to do with the stench that is south florida, why do some still try to associate that garbage with our brand? for sentimentality that no one cares about outside I-4?

An in-depth look at UCF's walk-ons

Bozo will have a field day with this thread, but here goes.

UCF has a rich tradition of developing walkons (from what little I know about the program pre-2017.). Due to its low tuition, UCF has an advantage with regard to signing and developing in-state preferred walk-ons, especially linemen, who generally takes YEARs to develop and aren't signed by Gus anyway.

Here is an in-depth look at 18 UCF walk ons:

Another delay for Boeing's Starliner crew capsule, launch NET May 21st

NASA officials and Boeing engineers will run tests and try to fix the helium leak before the next possible launch window on May 21 at 4:43 p.m. ET. Helium is used on the Starliner to pressurize the fuel that powers the spacecraft’s thrusters for orbital maneuvering.

The Atlas 5 rocket that launches Starliner into space is built by the Boeing and Lockheed Martin joint venture United Launch Alliance (ULA). Before attempting to launch Starliner last week, ULA discovered a faulty valve on the Atlas 5 and rolled the rocket off the launchpad to replace the valve.

Sensors on Starliner first detected suspicious traces of helium inside the propulsion system while the spacecraft was on the launchpad last week, but those detections did not raise alarm to engineers at the time, according to a person briefed on the mission operations.

Boeing engineers investigated the helium detections while ULA was replacing the faulty valve on Atlas 5 and determined more testing and scrutiny was needed in order to meet the mission’s strict launch safety criteria, the person said.

Athletic: Inside how college football’s transfer portal works: Coaches, players and agents dish on NIL

college-football-transfer-portal-nil-deals/

Entering the portal

The second a player’s name appears in the transfer portal, it’s like a high school recruitment all over again, only in a tighter time frame and with a history of college production to point to. Plus, there are financial conversations to be had.
Agent 3: There are absolutely kids going into the portal that don’t want to go into the portal, but the parents orchestrate it. And a big thing now is (collectives giving) a separate NIL stipend for parents to go to the games. Because that gets expensive. You can get a situation where the player gets a certain amount of money, but the parents take a big chunk out of it, so now it’s a big thing for the parents to get a separate NIL stipend. And that’s a big thing for the kids, because the parents are a big influencer.
Agent 1: I had a defensive line coach reach out to me over winter break and he told me, “These are the positions I need to fill; send me the list of your guys who are willing to enter the portal.” I gave him a list. It was as simple as that.

Agent 2: There are other programs that just ask the player directly in warm-ups.

Player 2: There was a school that, after we played them, one of their coaches came up and talked to me. “Hey, I know it was a bad deal here. I’m not really allowed to say much, but for what it’s worth, you have really big fans over here and I want you to know that. I know you’re entering the portal soon.” I was like, “OK, cool.”

Player 3: As soon as I entered the portal, my DMs started blowing up that night and it just kept going from there. It was definitely a cool experience. Coming out of high school, I didn’t get that kind of attention. It was cool to have these two very different recruiting experiences, going from being this guy who was really under the radar that no one knew about to being seen as a top guy in the portal.

Player 4: If I had to give a rough estimate, it’d be probably 20 to 25 schools.

Player 5: A LOT. Lots. Like maybe 60 or 70.

Player 1: At least 50. Probably more. The schools that I had multiple calls with and tried to maintain a relationship for at least a week or so were probably between 25 and 30.

How the deal is done

NIL collective CEO 1: We’re in direct contact with our coaches about roster management daily. It’s three conversations — high school recruiting, which is the smallest piece, it’s your current roster, and it’s portal recruiting. And we’re talking to our coaching staff daily, weekly, about all three buckets. It was a needed change. Now that everything’s kind of out in the open, the athletes now have full visibility of what each particular school is offering, and we can communicate with our coaches now, which helps us manage budgets and rosters.

NIL collective CEO 2: That wall of separation that was supposed to exist between collectives and student-athletes was enjoined by that district court decision.

NIL collective CEO 3: I’m told to make contact once there’s an official visit set up, and usually I’m making contact with a parent or an agent. It’s been very agent-heavy lately, especially during the December portal. I was on the phone with agents every day.

General manager 1: If you’re dealing with a high-quality transfer, it’s usually an agent. If it’s a G5 kid or something like that, it’s usually the kid and their parents.

NIL and the transfer portal continue to evolve, and there’s little doubt more changes are coming soon. So how chaotic is all the player movement?

Assistant coach 4: College football is funded by investors who give money. We have to be careful how far we push the limit because you can turn some people off. The media, no offense to you, play to the lower-level obsessive fans and the exciting (stories) are the worst 5 percent of situations. As everybody reads about the worst stories of NIL, they get this vision that this is what it is and we’re turning some people off — when 90 percent of the focus is on 10 percent of the situation. Most of (NIL is fine). I’m good with it. There’s 10 percent of situations that frustrate me, but they’re the ones written about.

Player 2: There was an SEC school that offered me $500,000 this past year, and looking back, maybe I should’ve tried to take that, but it wasn’t a situation where they were going to be winning a lot of games. I had another big program ask, “Hey, is there a number?” The school I signed with the second time was like, “Hey, is there a number you need,” and I said no. They were like, “Cool, we really appreciate that,” and they still paid me. But it wasn’t like I knew what I was gonna get going in. They just said they’d do everything they can for you.

When I got there, I probably made $100,000 this past year just from their collective, which was nice obviously. But they didn’t sell me on that. That was just how it ended up happening.

CBS Sports P4 Coach Rankings

Gus #28

Gus Malzahn: Like a Waffle House menu, when it comes to Malzahn, you already know what's on it and what you'll get before you ever walk in the door. What was different last season was that after going 18-9 in his first two seasons at UCF, the Knights moved to the Big 12. All things considered, a 6-7 record in their first season in the Power Four was a respectable finish. The 3-6 record in conference play isn't ideal, but it was a better mark than any of the other newcomers posted. 2023 rank: 34 (+6)

UCF MBB to begin series with Texas A&M, host Aggies Opening Knight

ORLANDO – The UCF men’s basketball team has scheduled a home-and-home series with Texas A&M, starting with the Knights hosting the Aggies for opening night on Monday, Nov. 4 followed by a trip to College Station in 2025.

The home-and-home series will mark the first of two meetings between UCF and Texas A&M on the hardwood.

The Aggies are fresh off back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths under the direction of head coach Buzz Williams. Texas A&M was a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Championship this season and topped Nebraska 98-83 before taking top-seeded Houston to the wire in a 100-95 Cougars overtime victory. The Aggies finished the 2023-24 campaign going 21-15, including a 9-9 mark in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play.

The Fanbase After Several Subpar Seasons

Saturday was a good preview of the future. We have had a lot of good to unbelievable seasons sprinkled in with a few duds over the past 15 years. We are entering our first stretch of several barely average to just plain bad seasons over next few years, unless something drastically changes.

I don’t think we have a bandwagon or fickle fanbase, but I do think Saturday really killed any momentum we had and I don’t see much enthusiasm for the program moving forward. With that, fan interest will drop off.

I also don’t see anything from the administration or coaching that shows any changes happening soon. We are substandard in NIL, facilities, money, resources and everything else needed to be competitive. We will continue to get our top talent picked off and we can’t come close to backfilling that talent.

Change my mind, please.
