Sons of UCF Interview: UCF Men's Basketball's Antwann Jones

UCF Basketball guard Antwann Jones joined episode 256 of the Sons of UCF podcast to talk about his time with the Knights. As a multi-time transfer, Antwann was looking for a stable home, which he knew he found immediately with the Knights. Through his time at UCF, Antwann was forced to sit out games while working through his eligibility status. Once on the court, Antwann provided a spark to a Knights team that could become stagnant on offense. As the season wore on, Antwann's playing time ebbed and flowed, but he prided himself on staying ready when his number was called. Ultimately the Knights exceeded pre-season expectations, which saw many media members pick them to finish dead last in the Big 12 Conference. Through the conversation, Antwann also shares his thoughts on working with coach Johnny Dawkins, the perception of UCF basketball, how media and fans drove him and his teammates, and his disdain for the team out west.

“Challenging Entertainment” UCF Women’s Softball BEAT BYU 9-4…Way To Go Ladies!!!

Ok everyone, this UCF Women’s Softball season has been “Challenging Entertainment” to say the least.

Yesterday’s game was certainly indicative of how our season has played out. Tense, close, controversial. Oh what a relief we won.

Tonight at 6:00 pm we again host BYU as part of the three game series, which ends Saturday. BYU does not play Sports on Sunday’s.

Actually we have two great games today. UCF Women’s Softball hosts BYU and our UCF Baseball team hosts Kansas State.

Great day for UCF Sports fans…

I'm on the fence about Johnny Dawkins and here's a few reasons why:

See responses in Bold:

UCF seemed discombobulated throughout much of the first half, shooting just 42% from the floor. These slow starts kill us year to year this never changes. Player talent or coaching? More on the Talent level of players.

The team was also plagued by bad passes, turnovers, and a lax transitional defense that allowed USF to go on a 14-3 run, which helped the Bulls build a double-digit advantage at 27-14. This has got to to be mostly coaching in my opinion. Year to year this never changes. Mostly coaching and knowing how to play in various circumstances.

South Florida hit nine 3-pointers in the first half, none more damaging than Selton Miguel’s 30-footer at the buzzer, which pushed the Bulls’ lead to 49-35 at the half. USF would finish with 13. We can never seem to stop the 3 pointers defensively.
Also, Bianci says it's our budget. I buy into that mostly for talent but others schools are excellent on small budgets. I guess player talent and listening to coach is a big factor (according to Sellers the guys don't listen enough to coach). Who's fault is that.
Year after year it's mostly the "rinse and repeat" with Dawkins.
Thoughts?

We were able to see the last few minutes of Tuesday's practice. Gus has said previously they would roll with different players on different teams to see how they respond. The previous first team OL was playing some together, but I did see a sequence when UCF rolled in some new guards on the first team - Jabari Brooks at LG and Cam Kinnie at RG. Brooks had been competed at No. 2 center and Kinnie on the second team as well.

The first team OL has been Amari Kight (LT), Paul Rubelt (RT), Adrian Medley (LG), Marcellus Marshall (RG) and Caden Kitler (C).

Not sure how long he's been back, but I spotted Ja'Cari Henderson on the field at CB. He was injured midway through last season. On that note, I thought I spotted freshman Antione Jackson getting some first team reps as well.

Converted QB to S Xavier Williams seems like he was around the ball a lot in the 10-15 minutes of team that we saw.

***DT Matthew Alexander making big impact at UCF ⚔️🏈

Matthew Alexander has been one of the most valuable members of UCF's defense the past two seasons.

Following a redshirt year in 2021, the Georgia native has played in every game since as part of the Knights' primary defensive tackle rotation. His 76.6 PFF grade in 2022 ranked No. 1 among UCF defenders. He made two starts while playing in every game in 2023, earning a solid PFF grade of 68.2.

Alexander made his press conference debut following Tuesday's spring practice.

"It's been very fun and exciting," Alexander said about his UCF career so far. "I love the atmosphere, coaches and staff. Playing with my brothers every day, it's awesome. I can't wait to see what we do this upcoming season."

Asked about his favorite game from the past two seasons, Alexander said it was last year's win against Oklahoma State. He had four tackles in that game.

"I think that was my best game," Alexander said. "It was a great feeling knowing we beat a top 25 team, walking off that field knowing I put the pieces together."

Alexander is excited about the changes Ted Roof is bringing to the defense.

"We're going to get more TFLs and sacks," Alexander said. "This defense allows us to get in the backfield more. We have way more blitzes and pressures. He has us moving more. Last year we were standing still on the blocks. This will get our stats higher. I really love it. I'm really excited now that I get to move around and fly around."

Asked about standouts this spring, Alexander loves what he's seeing from his defensive tackle teammate Andrew Rumph.

"He's been stepping up and taking that next step," Alexander said. "I'm excited to see what he does."

Alexander said he loves having Kenny Martin as his position coach. He had actually committed to UCF during the Josh Heupel era, but Martin had recruited him during his previous stop at Western Kentucky.

In his down time, Alexander likes to play video games such as Madden and NBA 2K. He's already signed up to be included in the new EA Sports College Football 25.

"It's a good opportunity for me," Alexander said. "I'm pretty excited about that."

UCF Spring Football Camp Report: "We got more physical this week."

The UCF Knights football team took to the field for another spring practice this week, and according to offensive coordinator Tim Harris, Jr, they were preaching physicality. Harris likes what he sees out of the receiver group, particularly the young guys. When it comes to quarterback play, Harris loves the growth and maturity from new Knights signal caller KJ Jefferson.
