The recruitment of three-star Riverdale (Fort Myers) H.S. forward Tyrone Baker is picking momentum.
UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins called Baker last week.
UNC-Wilmington, McNeese State, Florida Atlantic and East Tennessee State all offered this month. Baker also holds offers from East Carolina, Florida Gulf Coast, Iona, Louisiana-Monroe, McNeese State, Stetson, and UNC-Wilmington.
usf has been quietly recruiting Baker for some time and have had him on campus for unofficial visits. They like him but the positions they need to fill in the 2021 cycle are point guard and either a small forward or a guy who is versatile enough to play shooting guard or small forward.
According to a source, East Carolina currently "is recruiting him the hardest by far."
Baker is a skinny 6-foot-8 forward who might weigh 185-pounds, soaking wet with a roll of quarters in his pockets, but this kid has really been working on his game during the dead period. Particularly his shooting and his ball handling.
In fact, after the SWFL session of the Team Parsons Virtual Player Evaluation Series, held Saturday June 20, I mentioned Baker in this Tweet:
Since the first time I saw him in April 2019, I’ve always thought Baker was an intriguing, mobile, bouncy, active big, who runs the floor, finishes above the rim, is a good out of area rebounder, and a capable shot blocker in need of improvement with his offensive skills.
Well, he has worked on those skills and has really improved. Baker shows flashes of shot making and play making ability. If that continues we are talking about a small forward instead of the power forward he has projected to be.
