ECU's athletic department is housed within the Minges Coliseum structure and the main entrance features a modest "museum" (basically a couple walls of old jerseys, trophies, etc.). But it's better than what UCF has (they really have nothing except for a couple trophies on display in the football lobby and that's not really open to the general public).

The fact the UCF Arena (or Additional Financial, whatever) is operated as a semi-independent venue (not UCFAA) probably hurts as there is a definitely lack of UCF flair inside the facility.

The boom was felt far and wide.

John Walker, one of the top prospects in the country, formally announced his commitment to UCF on Thursday night. The four-star defensive tackle from Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola was highly coveted by virtually every school in the country with a top five that also included Florida, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State.

Some thought the Buckeyes could be the pick as he did favor them early. Maybe Florida where Billy Napier is looking to turn around that program.

UCF prevailed above all.

"I have a good bond with the coaches," Walker said. "Shout out to Coach (Kenny) Martin. He's a really good coach. I like everything about UCF. They have a really good plan for me. They're going into the Big 12. We're gonna do some big things. Coach Gus (Malzahn), we're gonna make some big moves. We're gonna make a run for it."

In fact, it was UCF all along. Walker revealed he silently committed to the Knights in May prior to his official visits.

"I felt like UCF was home," Walker said. "I told my parents I felt like this was the school for me and they agreed. (The coaches) were really happy. They were shocked. The only people that knew were Coach Martin and Coach Gus. The other coaching staff didn't know. I think they're really happy right now and happy that I'm going to be a part of the team."

Walker treasures the relationship he has with Martin, who is his future position coach.

"Coach Martin, that's my dog," Walker said. "I've known him since I was a sophomore. At first, I wasn't into UCF. I thought it was too close to home and I really didn't want to be that close. But he recruited me really good and has a really good plan for me. I can see the love he has for me and the love from the entire coaching staff. I felt like UCF is the best fit for me."

Walker said Ohio State was perhaps the favorite during his sophomore year, but UCF started to take charge last fall. Asked to name his runner-ups in order, Walker listed Michigan, Ohio State, Miami and then Florida. He was asked about the Gators' recruitment of him.

"(Florida) showed me the scheme they have for me and the fit, but I just didn't see myself in that," Walker said. "I didn't see myself playing for the Florida Gators."

There was online chatter from Ohio State fans that his mother was pressuring him to stay home. Walker saw the mentions on Twitter and wanted to set the record straight.

"I saw some tweets that my mom made my decision," Walker said. "That's not true. I made my decision. My parents had nothing to do with it. I think it was wrong for them to say that. It was all me. My parents agreed. They didn't care whatever school I went to. They would have supported me. This is all my choice."

Is his recruitment shut down?

"I'm not taking any more visits," he said. "I think I'm done. I'm going to try and win a state championship with my team. That's what I'm focused on."

Walker plans to enroll in January, which means he'll be able to participate in spring practice next year. That will give him a leg up since he's hoping he can play early.

"My goal is to be the best player I can be and win a couple awards," Walker said.

Ever since they arrived, Malzahn and his staff have made a concentrated effort to recruit the Orlando area, really pushing the "Hometown Hero" concept. Walker is proud to be the latest top player to stay home.

"It really means something to me," Walker said. "I've lived here my whole life. I want to do it for my city."

Big XII Basketball

The preseason top 25 poll is out and five teams from Big XII make the list. If you include Texas
it’s 6. JD has been middle of the pack in AAC, unable to recruit level of talent needed at next level. Plus,
his style of BB is boring. Hopefully T Mo will do what is necessary at seasons end and bring in energetic
coach that can recruit and likes to play up tempo style of ball. JD is nice guy but not what we need going into XII. Mediocre at Stanford and UCF, time for change.

Saturday will mark the final installment of UCF's longtime series with East Carolina.

The Knights and Pirates have met 20 times on the gridiron which is currently deadlocked in a 10-10 all-time series tie. Since 2005, the two schools have been conference rivals and have played every season except one (2013).

ECU had the edge in the early games, but UCF has now won six consecutive games in the series dating back to 2016. That includes a 20-16 victory in Orlando last season that was decided in the final minute.

The most memorable game is undoubtedly the 2014 contest. ECU was leading 30-26 late in the fourth quarter, but poor clock management on their part gave UCF an opportunity with 10 seconds left and backed up on their 35 yard line.

The Knights then perfectly executed two plays: Justin Holman connected with Josh Reese for a 14-yard gain, then Holman chucked it up deep and found Breshad Perriman in the end zone for a 51-yard touchdown.

The "Hail Perriman" play clinched a share of the American Athletic Conference Championship for UCF and signaled the beginning of a downturn for ECU. The Pirates suffered through six losing seasons before finally breaking through with a 7-5 year in 2021.

To preview Saturday's meeting in Greenville, N.C., we caught up with Jared Shafit of The Boneyard Podcast.

To get started, we talked about ECU's four-overtime 47-45 victory against Memphis this past weekend. The Pirates are 4-3, but are a couple plays away from being 6-1. They missed a potential game-winning field goal against NC State and also lost a double-overtime game to Navy.

ECU has seen a resurgence under Mike Houston, who arrived in Greenville in 2019 following a successful stint at James Madison. Houston replaced Scottie Montgomery, who finished with 3-9 records in all three of his seasons (2016-18).

Offensively, the Pirates are led by quarterback Holton Ahlers, a Greenville native. A fifth-year starter, Ahlers already holds both the school and American career passing records. ECU also had a stud running back in Keaton Mitchell, who leads the AAC in rushing with 97.0 yards per game. ECU is averaging 33.1 points per game.

Defensive, ECU ranks No. 16 nationally in red zone defense (UCF is No. 1 in that category). Among AAC teams, the Pirates rank fifth in scoring defense (24.6). According to PFF, ECU's top performers on defense have included cornerback Malik Fleming, safety Gerard Stringer and linebacker Jeremy Lewis.

Since Eastern North Carolina barbecue has been a hot topic this week, Jared and I talked about several food recommendations for those traveling to Greenville this weekend.

Football Season Ticket Price Comparison: UCF vs B12 (S End Zone Loge Estimate Added)

I was looking at the leftover B12 schools ticket prices to get an idea what UCF might charge once we join and how much UCF might be able to increase it’s football ticket revenue.

Because there are so many different ways to configure stadiums and pricing, it’s not always possible to match things exactly, and some of the schools websites do not have much detail on their club level seating. But as near as I can figure, here are the lowest and highest prices I saw for a few different comparisons.

A few schools (Kansas, Iowa St and TCU) had already pulled their season ticket prices down from their websites, so they are not included. Data is total price…ticket price + required donation.

UCF Tower Club $2,000
Oklahoma St $2,600. Texas Tech $3,350
Other schools looked like they had club areas but did not have the pricing on the website, sort of like UCF does not have the pricing for the loge seating along the upper walkway on their season ticket graphic.

UCF Section 110/210 (Home side 50 yard line upper and lower level) $1,200
Texas Tech $675 upper level
Kansas St $1,660 upper level (chairbacks in this section. Rest of stadium bleacher seats)
Other schools do not seem to have “club” amenities in these areas like UCF does.

UCF Section 112/211G (Home side 20 yard line upper and lower level) $1,000
Texas Tech & Oklahoma St $575
Baylor $885
Other schools do not seem to have “club” amenities in these areas like UCF does.

UCF Section 114 (Home side goal line lower level) $450
Baylor $350
Oklahoma St $525

UCF Section 213 (Home side goal line upper level) $300
Texas Tech $225
Kansas St & WVU $490

UCF Section 115 (Corner End Zone lower level) $200
Texas Tech & Baylor $350
Oklahoma St $525

UCF Section 215 (Corner End Zone upper level) $99
Texas Tech $150
Oklahoma St $400

Section 201 (End zone) $150
Texas Tech $275 (lower level)
Baylor $325 (upper level)
Oklahoma St $400 upper level, $525 lower level

So, our sideline seats are already comparable to the leftover B12 schools, but I think we probably have premium seating benefits that the other schools do not have so we can probably increase those a little bit.

Meanwhile, our end zone and corner end zone seating is significantly less expensive and these UCF sections did NOT see a price increase from 2019 to 2021 like the rest of the stadium did.
