After a brief postponement due to Hurricane Ian, UCF and SMU are set to do battle this Wednesday in the Bounce House. It's the American Athletic Conference opener for both schools and the ties run deep among coaching staffs. SMU is led by first-year head coach Rhett Lashlee, a Gus Malzahn protégé who was a high school quarterback for Malzahn and later coached with him at Auburn.

We caught up with Steve Lansdale, publisher of PonyFans.com for more than 20 years, to talk about the matchup. Lansdale also doubles as the SMU radio network football sideline reporter and does play by play for other SMU sports.

A few notes about SMU:

SMU is 2-2 to start the 2022 season:

at North Texas: W, 48-10
Lamar: W, 45-16
at Maryland: L, 34-27
TCU: L, 42-34

The SMU-TCU game is a longtime rivalry - the "Battle for the Iron Skillet" - and this past matchup also marked the return of Sonny Dykes, who left SMU for TCU this past offseason.

Lansdale spoke a bit about the heated atmosphere for that game.

Rhett Lashlee is SMU's new coach. We've covered his extensive history with Gus Malzahn. He played high school quarterback for Malzahn at Shiloh Christian High School in Arkansas and later coached with him at Auburn (and other stops).

Lashlee left Malzahn in 2017 to coach at UConn, then was the OC at SMU under Sonny Dykes in 2018-19 and had been at Miami the past two seasons. Given his ties to SMU and Dykes, he made a lot of sense for SMU for head coach.

SMU is No. 9 in total offense, averaging 506 yards per game. No. 6 in passing offense. On the other side of the ball, SMU is No. 91 in total defense (400 yards per game).

Meanwhile, UCF is No. 16 in total offense (482.5 ypg) and No. 26 in total defense (313 ypg). No. 1 in red zone defense.

Lansdale talks about players to watch from SMU, notably QB Tanner Mordecai (third nationally in passing) and WR Rashee Rice who leads the nation in receiving.

At the end, we also talked about conference realignment and chatter SMU could be a PAC-12 target. He's also heard the ACC.

How did former (sell-outs who entered transfer portal) Knights fair yesterday?

Dillon Gabriel- 15/23 233 yards 2 TD's and 0 INT's also ran for 1 TD

Jaylon Robinson- 1 run for 5 yards and 1 reception for 8 yards.

Cam Goode- 2 tackles

T. Mokiao-Atimalala- 1 reception for 6 yards

Tatum Bethune- TBD

With the exception of Gabriel, no one really lit the world on fire yesterday. Good....I hope they all continue assuming their new minor roles at their respective teams.

Huge news... The 🐐 is back!

Maybe not the 🐐 exactly, but the 🐴.

After a year-long absence in which he was temporarily replaced by "Knugget II," the original Knugget has returned!

Soggy field conditions restricted pregame field access for the first two home games vs. South Carolina State and Louisville, but the OG was back for the GT pregame and feisty as ever!

Knugget was first introduced in 2018 and instantly become a UCF phenomena. Everybody loved the little guy. There were even "Knugget Knights" at sporting events, which included Knugget bobblehead and poster giveaways.

Many of us were concerned Knugget had passed on and transitioned to the glue factory, or perhaps held out for a bigger contract. Whatever the reason, UCF fans should rejoice and celebrate that he's back!

🚨⚠️ Hurricane Ian Things to Do ⚠️🚨

Advice for this storm

-Make sure everything outside is secure, but while you are doing so take photographs of everything. Sheds, furniture, any outdoor structure, your windows, walls, if you can your roof as well. Prior storm documentation could be key to being protected if you actually need coverage.

-Speaking of coverage, review and have your policy handy. This is why you have coverage; for disasters such as this. Educate yourself on what your policy covers and what it doesn’t. If you’re not sure, talk to your agent (if you have one) or reach out to an attorney. I know quite a few great ones that could educate you.

-Post storm, be very, very careful who approaches you. Many companies from outside Florida are getting prepared to flock here to make a quick buck. Do your research:

*Are they local to CFL? You want to make sure anyone you work with can readily assist and warranty their services. A company in Texas isn’t much use to you here.

*Are they licensed and insured? This is a requirement in the state of Florida. With that said, make sure the license holder actually works for the company and is associated with them. Many out of town we contractors just “borrow” the license from someone to do work.

- Watch everything you sign. ASSIGNMENT OF BENEFITS CAN BEDANGEROUS. The state of Florida has strict rules on how they can be used. We at 3MG Roofing & Solar DO NOT use them because many contractors who do use them do so unethically. Protect yourself and make sure you know what you’re signing, what it means, and how it affects you and your property.

What is up with the Dungeon versus TMO?

What is going on with you guys and TMO? It seems to have started with the "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" song and ascillated with him passing on the Washington series. I'm reading pure disdain for the man in these threads. Like, folks want him gone ASAP. Am I missing something? Even if I disliked the song and wanted to fly to Seattle... Just our reaction doesn't seem to fit the crime.

New Orleans B & B or Inn

Mrs. Z is not really into football but she likes New Orleans. I want to stay someplace different when we go to New Orleans for the Tulane game. I would like to stay at a true B & B or older Inn. Anybody know of anyplace like that (Within a reasonable price I am thinking somewhere around $200/night)? I would like it to be easy walking to Restaurants and shops, either Old City or Garden District, I don't have to be right in the French Quarter, maybe Business District.
