***Divaad Wilson talks spring 🏈***

We caught up with defensive back Divaad Wilson following Thursday's scrimmage. If I'm not mistaken, the last time we spoke to him was during last preseason. I don't think we heard from him during the season.

He's currently playing nickel after starting at strong safety last year. He thinks he could alternate between the two.

He said going back and forth between safety and nickel is difficult because you're approaching the ball carrier from different depths.

He needs to improve the most on open-field tackling.

Divaad thinks the secondary is the strongest group on the team.

He graduates May 6. He's doing it for his mom and grandma.

Asked how he thinks the offense did today, he said they gave them a run for their money today.

Who has impressed this spring? Divaad says Nikai Martinez and Koby Perry.

Tell us more about Koby Perry: "His film speaks for itself. He's a dog. See ball, hit ball, get ball."

He doesn't want to allow any touchdowns this year.

Divaad thinks they have a great chance to be really good this year.

***Spring Update with Co-Defensive Coordinator David Gibbs 🏈***

David Gibbs, UCF's co-defensive coordinator who oversees the secondary, talked about his group as the team heads into the final week of spring practice.

Gibbs says when the competition is good, players will practice harder. So that's a big positive of having depth and competition.

Safety Koby Perry is a "competitive, physical player." He's got things to improve on, but "brings an edge."

Gibbs wanted to make clear that he and Addison Williams collectively coach the secondary.

"Make no mistake, Addison Williams is a rock star. He should be in here instead of me. He's going to be a DC here in college football in the next two or three years."

Gibbs believes UCF's offense is "heads and shoulders better" than last year. No matter who the QB is, "they're freaking good." Gus/Lindsey do so many different things with motions, etc., it only helps the defense .

CB Davonte Brown is a good kid, quiet kid, really smart, does everything the right way. Trying to become more of a leader. "Looking forward to big things from him."

CB Brandon Adams has gotten better. He arrived last June and was also a QB in HS, and is doing a great job.

Gibbs reiterated how good the kids are. They take care of business in the classroom. They're easy to coach.

Divaad Wilson is versatile with his mouth and dancing. He can play wherever.

"We have a lot of versatility in the secondary with guys who can play in multiple spots. You have to have depth because playing 12, 13 games, guys are going to get hurt and guys have to know multiple positions. Newt can play nickel, safety, whatever, but we have a group of guys that can play multiple things."

Freshman CB Nikai Martinez only practiced maybe two or three times. He's had a hamstring issue.

S Quadric Bullard is not practicing this spring as he had surgery on his shoulder.

"He's probably our smartest guy in the back end as far as making adjustments, being the so-called quarterback of the defense. He's pretty good at that... UCF is in a good spot right now. Quad is a piece of the puzzle. The sooner he's back, the better for him and better for us. He has gained weight. That's good. He'll gain strength. To play however many games he played with a torn shoulder is impressive, so he's tough."

A few notes from practice

I thought I'd just share a few things I saw from my perspective.

Guy's that have taken that "next" step:
- Jeremiah Jean-Baptiste (brings the thump that Bethune did)
- Josh Celiscar (dude goes hard on every rep, that's hard to do with his consistency. Great work ethic.)

Keep an eye on Matthew Alexander at DT, he looked pretty solid in drills.

The regular cast of Flash, O'Keefe and Bowser all looked the part as expected. Jordan McDonald is a big RB, it will be cool to see him go from HS body to D1 over the next 2 years or so. I thought the DBs looked pretty strong throughout, seems like we have a lot of quality depth and athleticism in that group. Lee Hunter looks big but I noticed a fair bit of technique coaching, he'll play for sure but we should remember, he's effectively a freshman. A certain coach with big influence mentioned Nakai was "different." Said he expects him to play this fall if he continues to progress. Seemed to hint at he's the real deal from an athletic standpoint.

On to the QB battle. It seems like it's sort of a 1A/1B situation from what I can see. Edge to Keene. Keene still throws the same, so for people expecting him to go from where he was last year to the previous few QBs we've had aren't in touch with reality. I do think he's gained confidence and probably a much better game manager, experience is huge. You can absolutely see that JRP has special running ability. His throws seem a bit softer and the type that DBs will feast on in general terms (floaty and not as accurate). I thought he was pretty magical when plays broke down, he makes some great short throws in scrambles but I didn't see someone who was going to beat out Keene from a pure passing standpoint. He's a gamechanger though, I just don't know if he's good enough throwing the ball to be the guy. Keene seems like the reliable choice, slightly better in the passing game but doesn't have that "it" factor to change the game. I expect them to use JRP a bit if Keene is the guy. Castellanos looks like he might have some very good upside. He's got that JRP type of running ability and sort of point guard to him. I think he throws a pretty good ball. It's quite obvious he's an incoming true freshman though. Given Keene and JRP, I don't see him playing this year unless there's an emergency or a blow out to get him some reps. He's a guy that could be "the guy" in the future with some more development. He's got a good skill set to work with.

My ridiculous "I saw a practice and will now predict the season" thoughts:
I think if we remain healthy, we will take that next step and have a really good season. I see an opportunity to compete for the AAC title. I don't feel like we have that special QB to give me the confidence that we're going to run the table but we have a lot of pieces and a favorable schedule. I think our offensive line got better, the running game should do well and defense should be better overall (still think we need a LB transfer). I think what separates us from maybe a 10-11 win season to undefeated is really going to be the passing game. I feel good about the short game and creativity. I'm sure we'll connect downfield a little but I don't get the Bortles/KZ/DG feel of with a little time they can pick things apart. I feel it's more we got guys who can run the system...they'll make some plays and they'll miss some, etc.

Recruiting notes, quite a few folks out there today (a big group from Wekiva) . T-will mentioned they feel very good about this class and think they can land a lot of talent. My translation of that would be expect 3-5 4* guys this year if we can get the ones they think they can get.

UCF Cover Boy

Just thinking with the football magazines coming out soon, Athlon, Phil, Lindy’s, who would be on a cover representing UCF?
Lately we have had Milton and maybe Big Cat last year was known around the country. Doesn't seem like there is a star on the team. Bowser, Flash or
Ryan O’Keefe maybe? TC in the future with McDonald I hope!

OT: New College Volleyball Coach Cuts All 19 Players and Took Away Scholarships

This new Volleyball Coach will obvious rely on the transfer portal this summer to restock her team.

I could see more new HCs do this now that free agency is the norm and some sports can be reloaded up quickly (especially if said team wasn't very good).

Way OT: Bragging on My Son's Band

Please excuse the bragging but wanted to share my son's band with the board. They're the Tone Deaf Pedestrians and include Ryder on keyboard (11), Harper on drums and backup vocals (13), my son Jake lead guitar and lead vocals (13) and Gavin on bass (15). They all take lessons at The Groove Shack in Satellite Beach - Jake and Harper were in the same class in 5th grade and wanted to join up with a couple other kids from Groove Shack to start a band and that's how they all got together. They've been playing together a little over two years now and are sounding really good! (In my totally unbiased opinion...)

They mostly cover 90's rock (Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine) and do some older stuff too (Zeppelin, Beatles, Black Sabbath) as well as two originals so far. They won a battle of the bands contest a couple weeks ago and the main prize is a day in studio to have one of their original songs professionally recorded which should be coming up soon. As a person who really enjoys music but is not musically talented I'm blown away by these kids.

They are opening a music festival tomorrow night 4/9 at Intracoastal Brewery in Eau Gallie, the event starts at 4 and they go on at 5 if anyone is interested.

Last shameless plug before a few songs - they are on Facebook, IG, YouTube @tonedeafpedestrians if anyone wants to check them out or come see a show. They're mostly on the Space Coast and have a bunch of shows coming up the next few months.

Thanks for indulging this proud Dad!

***OL Matt Lee: "I absolutely think we can win a conference championship" 🏈***

With returning experience and impressive additions via the transfer portal, UCF center Matt Lee thinks they'll have what it takes to reclaim the top spot in the American. The Oviedo native spoke about their progress this spring and ended things by stating that team goal.

Matt thinks the offense won the scrimmage.

"It was a good battle back and forth like it is every time we go out there. I think we put together some good drives. I think the offense took the day."

Is there a play that sticks out?

"I think if there's one play that stood out, I think it was the first drive. Third play of the drive. John Rhys Plumlee pulled the ball, broke like two tackles in the backfield and busted for like an 80-yard touchdown run. That was super cool to see."

He added it was cool for the QBs to be live so plays like that could happen.

One of his biggest goals personally is to improve his overall football I.Q., not just for him on the offensive line but understanding the entire offense.

Both Sam Jackson and Lokahi Pauole have been practicing at center.

"Center is kind of different than guard and tackle. A little bit different with the ball in your hand and how your feet are set. It's been fun to give them tips and coaching them."

Matt said the relationships within the team are great.

Adrian Medley has really stepped up this spring, developing into a consistent starter-type player. Med-Ball is his nickname.

On Mikey Keene, his confidence shows.

"He's a natural leader. He comes out there and knows how to lead the team and get us going no matter what. It's great for me because I feel like I've got to be the leader of the offensive line, but you've got a guy like Mikey that I can rely on no matter what. He's got his stuff right."

He feels they have a great group of running backs.

How much better can the offense be this year?

"I think we can be really good, especially going into year two under Coach Malzahn's system. Just the understanding and the mentality behind how we run plays. I think we can be really good."

On Virginia OT transfer Ryan Swoboda: "He's been good. Still learning the system. We've been here for a year in this offense, but he just got here. Ryan has been great. Huge guy. He's like 6-foot-10, 325 pounds or whatever. He's that big, but he doesn't move like he's big. He moves like a smaller guy which I love to see."

Matt thinks the offense is evolving as well.

AAC championship is the team goal.

"It's hard to win a championship, but I think we got the guys. If we can continue to develop, I absolutely think we can win a conference championship."

***Scrimmage Update with OC Chip Lindsey 🏈***

UCF held their second scrimmage of the spring inside the Bounce House on Thursday. Afterward, we were able to catch up with offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey who talked about the day.

Recap:

Lindsey thought the offense responded from Tuesday when he wasn't as happy.

"We still have a lot of things to clean up, but we flew around and I thought we made some big plays on offense. Today's scrimmage, by design, we were going to throw it a bunch more. When you start doing that, that leads to protections and doing it right, testing our quarterbacks to make sure they understand what protection we need to be in. I thought that was good. By the naked eye, I don't think we had a ton of mistakes there.

"We made some big plays down the field. I thought the quarterbacks didn't put the ball in jeopardy too many times, even though we threw it 50 times. I thought they made pretty good decisions for the most part. Our wideouts made some plays down the field. Especially with the older group, we know we have some guys that can play. When we ran the ball, I thought we ran it well too. The defense was pretty vanilla which always makes things a little better too. Overall, really happy with how our guys responded from Tuesday."

I asked him to elaborate more about the big plays from the wide receivers.

"Flash made a couple plays down the field. (Ryan) O'Keefe made one. Kobe (Hudson) made a great play on a screen. Jaylon Griffin caught one down the sideline... I think Jordan (Johnson) caught one. (JaJuan) Forte. Right at the end, we had a young guy catch a touchdown."

Lindsey then said the QBs were live in the scrimmage, so it was good to see how they react.

"That brings a whole new element for the offense and the defense. Now the play stays alive. I know John Rhys (Plumlee) made one big play when the play broke down. Mikey (Keene) did the same thing, scrambling for a first down, which is good to see for him. We played real football today. We'll look at the film and see, but overall I walked away feeling better than I did on Tuesday for sure."

They're mostly working with two groups. He said the QBs were still rotating.

"We'll continue that through spring I would assume. They both got the same number of possessions."

Lindsey sees the chemistry improving between the QBs and WRs.

"I think it's getting better. Obviously Mikey being here last year, I think you saw early on there was chemistry there with the older guys. But I really believe John Rhys is coming along nicely. When you narrow it down and start repping just a couple guys, that makes the chemistry come a little quicker. Over the last two or three practices I think I've seen that. A lot of things we do, there's decision making that takes place on the move or post snap. I think that stuff is getting better every practice."

I asked more about John Rhys and his decision making.

"Yeah, it is (improving). Just a couple examples. Today, his eyes are on the right side of the field where they're supposed to be. They're not late. Whether it's a one-high or two-high look, so I was pleased on the sideline seeing that. Couple things down in the red zone, I thought we've got to get better whether it was the run game or one of the throws he made. But really I thought he made a pretty big step forward today from that standpoint."

Lindsey talked about the competition on the offensive line.

"You can't never have enough guys that can snap the ball. If you've got one guy that can snap, you're really nervous if something were to happen. Herb has been rotating in several guys at center. Obviously Matt (Lee) is a veteran guy and he can play all 80 snaps if he wanted to. At guard, I think he's still got a little competition especially on that left side. He's still finding which tackle combination works the best. The good thing about it is they're all doing good things which makes it hard. That's what you want. Depth is everything to win a championship or have a great season. You're going to have some bumps and bruises along the way, so you better have some depth."

Isaiah Bowser is being held out from scrimmages, so I asked about the RBs behind him.

"Johnny (Richardson) had a couple big runs, then was out pretty early. R.J. (Harvey) is still rehabbing. We got a lot of young running backs in. Mark-Antony (Richards) got some work. Jordan McDonald. All of them played some. Really after the first couple drives, Johnny was out. It is what it is. Johnny has played a bunch. We know he's very capable. What we've seen out of him in the spring, he's grown. He's a better player. You may not see it on the field because he's electric all the time, but understanding protections, front and all the things that go along with it. Bowser is obviously a veteran guy that's very good at that stuff."

What do Mikey and John Rhys need to do to wrap up spring?

"Mikey, usually his decision making is really good. I think for him, it's maybe speeding that process up just a little. Also, making a few plays with his feet. Say you're in a third-down situation and it's five or six. It's not real clean. You know it's man coverage. So you should have an opportunity to make a play with your feet. He did that today. I think that was one thing that sticks out in my mind.

"With John Rhys, it's throwing balls that give our guys an opportunity to put their hands on it. A guy is running down the sideline and you want to throw a back shoulder ball. You want to throw it in a spot where he can catch it or nobody can catch it. You don't want that ball inside.

Today was the final scrimmage before the spring game.

"Today was a really big one for us. We needed to really throw a lot at those quarterbacks in the pass game and see who could execute when the rush is on and so forth, being live. I think we got a lot of good information. I'm excited to see the film."
