***Scrimmage Update with DC Travis Williams 🏈***

UCF defensive coordinator Travis Williams rated his group as "solid" during Thursday's scrimmage.

"To be honest with you, I thought it was just solid defensively. We did some good things. Nothing wrong. I don't know if I felt the defense. I thought we were out there and made some plays, but it's a little different when you can just feel it. Getting everyone to the ball and things like that. I just thought it was solid."

T-Will thought the secondary handled the passing attack fairly well, which was the offensive focus in this scrimmage. He alluded to an issue with the linebackers covering running backs coming out of the backfield.

"Our tackling was just okay. When you look at the defense, you want to be able to throw a blanket out there and cover the whole defense. I didn't feel that way as far as us being vicious and getting to the ball with bad intentions."

Did any individual plays stand out? Interceptions?

"Marco Domio made an interception in the red zone, which was good. We gave up a big run and Marco made an interception there. That's one play that stuck out to me. A really good play by him."

He said communication was "good at times" and other times "not to our standard." Seems like some motion flustered them at times.

What was the dynamic like with the QBs live?

"We were playing real football, who can break tackles. We didn't get anybody hurt which was good."

T-Will said a bright spot was the red zone defense along with some fourth-down stops.

I asked T-Will about the competition within the secondary, which could be the deepest group on the team. That led to a comment about social media.

"For me, it's easy. I just look at the film. Like I told the guys after the scrimmage today, I don't care what you tweet. I don't care what you Instagram. I don't care about your likes. I'm a football coach. I just judge the film. You can put a picture out there and a nice little caption. That don't mean a hill of beans when it comes to football. We touched on that. I want football players. All these likes and stuff is cool. So I judge the film. That's the great thing about this sport. The film don't lie. You rob a bank and it's on film, you're a bank robber."

How is Divaad Wilson doing?

"He's doing well. I challenged him before the spring to take that extra step. He's playing some different positions. He's actually having a really solid spring. He really is. I'm very proud of his progress. His preparation. Also, he's about to graduate. Super happy for him on that end too. He's taken his game to another level as far as coming in and he's trying to meet and do some extra things. Being challenged. When I say challenged, we went over different things he can improve on. He's been working really hard to improve. I'm proud of his progress."

I asked about CB Jarvis Ware's progress returning from injury. The former Missouri player was on track to start before tearing his ACL last August. T-Will said the recovery was going well, but no need to rush him back out there this spring.

DT Lee Hunter is developing.

"He's a massive human being that can move people. I don't give him a lot. I give him a couple things to do. I said just move that joker right there in front of you. If you can do that and play in the backfield, we can be a pretty good defense. He's doing well. He's progressing. He's learning. We go fast here and install a lot. At the same time, I'm giving him stuff he can do. I don't know him thinking. I need him getting off the ball and playing vertically. He's doing really well."

Have any young players impressed him this spring?

"Before he had a little hamstring, Nikai Martinez is a guy. Okay, I can see he has a bright future. It's kind of early to judge it, but from the practices I saw, I can see this kid has a chance. Proud of his progress. He's a student of the game. Asks a lot of questions. He's a young guy that sticks out. Another one is Matt Alexander. He's doing good on the defensive line. Very pleased with his progress. He's a kid that we redshirted last year at defensive tackle from Buford, Ga. He's doing really well. Kervins Choute had a good scrimmage the last time. I haven't watched the film yet to know how he did today. He's another guy that's stepping up as well. Those names jump off my mind."

T-Will concluded by saying he wants guys to play with an edge. For the rest of spring, he wants to see good body position on tackles.

OT: LSU HC Kelly says lack of training table and not $$ pushed him out of ND

Yesterday, Kelly told the media that it was the lack of having a training table in his athletic building that pushed him out of ND.

When they say it's not the money...its ALWAYS about the $$.

Kelly now has the richest per year contract ($9 Million), plus, he is guaranteed $1 Million in bonuses basically every year ($500,000 for being employed every July 1st and another $500,000 for playing in ANY bowl game).

OT: Fake Federal agents arrested

Link

Two men masquerading as Department of Homeland Security officers in Washington duped several members of the Secret Service, providing them with tens of thousands of dollars in gifts, including rent-free apartments, federal prosecutors said. One of the men told several people that he had connections to Pakistan’s main intelligence agency, prosecutors said in federal court on Thursday.

@ucfclay you know these dudes?

OT: FAU Football Stadium to get fake turf before UCF Game

This sucks...as too many times, UCF players don't end up with the right cleats and end up "skating" across the turf in this road games with fake turf.

PS. Personally, FAU Football's actual attendance is so bad...I think they have almost given up attracting fans to games so now they will put the fake turf down so they can host AAU LaCrosse or 10 and under soccer tournaments every weekend trying to earn a few bucks.

***Video: UCF 7-on-7 inside the Bounce House 🎥***

This was the final part of viewing before the scrimmage (and we had to leave). JRP was with the first team offense when the 7-on-7 began. Also offensive first team: RB Isaiah Bowser, TE Alec Holler, WR Jaylon Robinson, WR Ryan O'Keefe, WR Jaylon Griffin or WR Kobe Hudson. I think Griffin was in on the first play and then maybe was subbed for Kobe because I saw a No. 2 in the corner of the screen at the end of the first group.

Defensively, CBs were Corey Thornton and Davonte Brown, nickel was Divaad Wilson, safeties were Dyllon Lester and William Wells. LBs were JJB and Quade Mosier.

Second team 7-on-7 offense: QB Mikey Keene, RB Johnny Richardson, TE Zach Marsh-Wojan, WR Jordan Johnson, WR Stephen Martin, WR Amari Johnson,

Second team defense includes CB Brandon Adams, CB Marco Domio, nickel Justin Hodges, safeties Trevion Shadrick-Harris and Koby Perry, LBs Derek Burns and Cole Joyce.

Thomas Castellanos leads the third group.

UCF NFL Draft Prospects

https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2022/04/07001122/2022_TheBeast_NFL_Draft_Guide.pdf

This is the best NFL draft content there is yearly. The dude ranks 1,698 players! Not even 15% of those guys will get drafted. Here is where the UCF players rank.

  • Brandon Johnson #69 (nice) ranked WR
  • Marcus Tatum #86th ranked OT
  • Cole Schneider #29th ranked Guard
  • Big Kat #59th ranked Edge defender.
  • Noah Hancock #110 ranked DT
  • Kalia Davis #10 ranked DT!!! 4th-5th round
STRENGTHS: Outstanding upfield quickness to knife through gaps ... uses his natural leverage to play low and balanced through redirect blocks ... coils his hips and barrels into blockers to put them in reverse, but you rarely see him go backward at contact ... quick hands and decent arm length to swim or rip ... keen eye for where the ball is going to stay ahead of blocks ... stays disciplined and active in the run game ... fluid redirect skills to make sharp cuts mid-pursuit ... outstanding motor to chase plays outside the numbers ... productive when he was on the field.

WEAKNESSES: Short, squatty frame and needs to work on his build ... carries some sloppy weight and needs to stay on top of his conditioning ... below average finishing skills, often playing out of control and sliding off the ball carrier ... his hands are active, but his pass rush moves aren’t connected ... late with his hands, allowing blockers to reach his chest ... struggles to recover once blockers gain the upper hand ... has played in only five games since the 2019 season after opting out of the 2020 season and suffering a torn ACL in his right knee (October 2021), requiring surgery a month later.

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at UCF, Davis was a three-technique in defensive coordinator Travis Williams’ front, lining up inside, outside and over the guard. A 235-pound linebacker as a senior in high school, he transitioned to the defensive line in 2019, missed the 2020 season because of COVID and was in the midst of a breakout senior year before his ACL injury. Davis bursts upfield with his low center of gravity and football GPS to either find cracks at the line of scrimmage or create them. However, he tends to rely on his first step and effort as a rusher rather than a coordinated plan of attack, which also hurts his finishing ability. Overall, Davis’ tape has more flash than consistency (only five games played the last two seasons), but he fires out of his stance with twitch and range to create backfield disruption vs. the run and as a pass rusher. He is a developmental three-technique prospect.
