The Book of Mormon

So after watching UCF vs BYU on Saturday, we're going to complete our Mormon-filled weekend by heading to the Dr. Phillips Center on Sunday to watch The Book of Mormon.
I wonder how many of the 10,000 BYU fans from Saturday will be at the show on Sunday?
Anyone else going to watch the show this weekend?

Hopefully, I'm not yelling "Hasa Diga Gustavo" too often during the game.

***UCF PFF Defense Player Grades - 37-24 loss to BYU 🏈

Rivals has continued its partnership with Pro Football Focus (PFF) which grants me access to their comprehensive analytics and statistical tools.

After each game, two separate analysts grade every player on each play of the game and the two totals are averaged out. Obviously no subjective ranking system is perfect, but I am finding that my real world impressions of a player in a certain game usually reflects the PFF grade.

PFF Grading Scale

90 and above - Elite
80 to 89 - Great
70 to 79 - Good
60 to 69 - Average to Above Average
50 - 59 - Below Average
49 and below - Poor

Season Defensive Grades (by game)

New Hampshire - 90.5
Sam Houston - 72.4
@ TCU - 63.1
Colorado - 67.5
@ Florida - 59.8
Cincinnati - 69.3

The Current Problems with ADs and Football Head Coaches

Since the transfer portal and NIL started (and direct pay on the way), they should never be signing a coach for more than 3 years…with 4th year option on first contract, then renegotiate on 3 year deals after that. You pay some more for the initial contract but you might not be losing more money down the road.

In the past the thought was if your coach is signed for a long period the kids will stay, and recruits would be attracted to that. That mindset should have gone out the window with the transfer portal & NIL.

The flip side of this is Jimbo. They extended him for a decade, then he tanked, got fired after 4? seasons and will collect the rest of his contract. Texas A&M thus lost the whole “stability” argument and it ended up being a very costly financial decision.

If this were the case Gus would be in his optional 4th season and we could move on without renewing him. By extending him, if we fire him we’re going to pay him big money anyways. Why not do something like load up the initial contract, including bigger incentives, taking into account some of what you might be paying them for a second contract but you give yourself an out.

This is good for coaches as well. Instead of forecasting current pay out for longer contracts, they can keep or find new jobs that the current market is setting.

Something like this. Someone has to be the first one to do something different. As was said in Moneyball,”The first one through the wall always gets bloodied.” Feel free to spitball ideas. I’d love to hear any. I just feel like ADs need to change the way they conduct business.

I really don’t think most players care about the stability aspect of college football coaching in general anymore.

REPORT: UCF Assistant Coaches - We have to get it fixed.

UCF Football coordinators Ted Roof and Tim Harris, Jr met with the media Sunday night to discuss the latest UCF loss, their first straight, against BYU. Offensively, the Knights struggled to get a consistent rhythm, at least until QB Dylan Rizk entered the game. On defense, missed tackles and a back-breaking TD before halftime were too much to overcome.

UCF Fast & Slow - BYU Edition

I was hopeful/confident after how the team played last week on the road that we would come home and build off that. I thought worst case we lose a competitive game. I didn’t expect to regress and get dominated. Again, I am finding myself blaming coaching more then the players, of course a lot of blame to go around but the slows will focus on coaching…

Reasons Gus lost this game…

Maybe Terry can use this to get rid of Gus for cause…

1. Not going for it down 7 needing only 1 yard to go on your first series.

2. 3&2 on BYU’s first series and BYU calls a time out. You didn’t start Barber/Lee probably because you were trying to have at least one on the field at all times. Why did you not sub them in for such an important play? I believe the ball went right at Alexander that play.

3. QB rotation…

4. Harvey rushes for 26 yards, and you line up to do hurry up and you 😱 run it up the middle.

5. Every time Harvey lined up wide and no one else in back field it was a sweep.

6. Worst scripted start to a half after halftime…

How else did Gus affect the game today?

Serious recruiting question

We’ve had so many portal entries and de-commitments and most seem to be on defense. How badly does this impact next years roster? It “feels” like next year is going to be like the recruiting of a first year coach where there is a gap.

How bad is it? Our depth is already not great and we graduate some big names.

I don’t mind when a team struggles as long as it seems that we are moving in a positive direction even if we are losing. It feels like we are getting worse and we have nothing coming to help next season. Is that an accurate statement defensively?

***Tylon Lee: 'UCF is building something special' / Updated: Decommits, going to Ole Miss 🏈

Friday was a big day for the future of UCF's defensive line.

Tylon Lee is the latest to join UCF's commitment brigade, joining Darryll Desir and Mandrell Desir to give the Knights their third edge rusher of the day.

"UCF is building something special and I want to be a part of it," Lee told UCFSports.com. "I have a great relationship with the coaches. I'll have a great opportunity to come in and play early too."

Lee, who is from Pace, Fla., visited UCF during Bounce House Weekend. His future position coach Kenny Ingram was also his primary recruiter.

"We have a great relationship," Lee said. "He was always checking up on me, seeing how I'm doing and also my family."

As a junior, Lee tallied 61 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, five sacks and two forced fumbles.

"UCF said they liked how I carry myself on and off the field," Lee said. "I'm humble, but I still get after it on the field. They said they liked how I'm a hard-working young man that's very respectful."

His other summer official visits included Arkansas, Kansas and Miami. After deliberating the first few days of July, Lee called UCF head coach Gus Malzahn to pledge his commitment.

"He was excited," Lee said. "He told me that I made his day. He just had a little vacation, but we chopped it up a little bit. When I told him he was real fired up."

Lee is now focused on finishing with a big senior season before enrolling at UCF next January.

"I'm very excited," he said. "I'm pumped up. I can't wait to get there."
