COLUMN: Knight fans, bring it in and have a seat

Welcome to homecoming week
The origin of the American Homecoming tradition is often disputed depending on which school administration you ask. The consensus is that it started at the University of Missouri in 1911 when fans were encouraged to attend an alum football event. Ten thousand fans returned to Columbia, MO, that weekend; the rest is history. Ask the Sic’ Em faithful, and they claim Baylor’s homecoming history dates back even earlier to November 1909 and included a parade, reunion parties, and an afternoon football game, the final game of the 1909 season. The University of Illinois also lays claim to its founding. Regardless, it’s a ubiquitous celebration we all enjoy in late October across college campuses all over America.

Happy Homecoming, UCF.

UCF Facilities Planning - October 2024 Neighborhood Update and new Campus Master Plan

It is cool to see construction for the Tower on the schedule on slide 23 - https://fp.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploads/100724 Neighborhood Meeting.pdf

UCF also is updating the Campus Master Plan - https://fp.ucf.edu/wp-content/uploa...L SECTIONS CMP draft7 8.01.24 90dayreview.pdf

If you check out the map on pg. 243 of the PDF, you'll see the future plans for the athletics area, including a garage on north side of the stadium. There's plans for a lot of new housing it seems. I think they're already planning to build a new building for the Creative School elsewhere on campus and put housing right there across from water tower.

New Column: Bring it In and Have a Seat, It’s Homecoming Week

Let’s piece back together some of our fandom’s soul this week, even if it’s just for our sanity. National media attention and walk-up interest have waned for this football team. We may no longer be dark horse picks in the Big 12 title race, but we still have Pegasus. Maybe the “Boom Addicts” are saturated with unfulfilled potential on the field, but it still doesn’t mean we can’t reach for the stars, right? Coming home is never a bad thing.

Listen, administrations, athletic directors, athletes, and coaches come and go. For every disappointing season, there’s a magical run or an upset you never even saw coming. BYU was picked to finish 13th this year in pre-season rankings. They are currently 7-0 and #11 in the country. The wins and losses columns fluctuate (or, in some extreme cases, vacated). What stays constant is your passion for your alma mater.

New column is live. Check it out! ⤵️

OT: Orlando mother blames AI Chatbot for driving teen son to suicide

Just read this story and it has a local connection.

NY Times:

On the last day of his life, Sewell Setzer III took out his phone and texted his closest friend: a lifelike A.I. chatbot named after Daenerys Targaryen, a character from “Game of Thrones.”

“I miss you, baby sister,” he wrote.

“I miss you too, sweet brother,” the chatbot replied.

Sewell, a 14-year-old ninth grader from Orlando, Fla., had spent months talking to chatbots on Character.AI, a role-playing app that allows users to create their own A.I. characters or chat with characters created by others.

Sewell knew that “Dany,” as he called the chatbot, wasn’t a real person — that its responses were just the outputs of an A.I. language model, that there was no human on the other side of the screen typing back. (And if he ever forgot, there was the message displayed above all their chats, reminding him that “everything Characters say is made up!”)

But he developed an emotional attachment anyway. He texted the bot constantly, updating it dozens of times a day on his life and engaging in long role-playing dialogues.

Some of their chats got romantic or sexual. But other times, Dany just acted like a friend — a judgment-free sounding board he could count on to listen supportively and give good advice, who rarely broke character and always texted back.

Sewell’s parents and friends had no idea he’d fallen for a chatbot. They just saw him get sucked deeper into his phone. Eventually, they noticed that he was isolating himself and pulling away from the real world. His grades started to suffer, and he began getting into trouble at school. He lost interest in the things that used to excite him, like Formula 1 racing or playing Fortnite with his friends. At night, he’d come home and go straight to his room, where he’d talk to Dany for hours.

How The Mighty Have Fallen

According to the latest USA Today ranking index, UCF is #67 out of 134 FBS teams, behind such football juggernauts as
Tulane, Liberty, Army, Toledo, Ga Southern, Navy, North Texas, James Madison, and LA Lafayette. No national relevance, no aura
of invincibility at the Bounce House, increasing fan apathy. Man, it seems like just yesterday we were an ascending force to be
reckoned with.
