I was at UCF MBB availability earlier in the day on Monday and will post interviews with
Johnny Dawkins, Darin Green and
C.J. Walker later on. The Knights lost a heartbreaker to Oklahoma this past Saturday and are currently gearing up to play at Auburn this Wednesday night. The Tigers are ranked No. 21 in the latest AP Poll.

As for recruiting, assistant coaches are back out on the road visiting high schools and meeting with commits.
Gus Malzahn's first home visit was on Sunday night to meet with DL commit
Jamaal Johnson. Both DL coaches (
Kenny Ingram &
Kenny Martin) also tagged along. I caught up with Jamaal a little bit earlier and will have that interview soon. Teaser: Jamaal's goal is to be the "best pass rusher in UCF history."

On Monday, Gus visited a couple local high schools: Edgewater and Bishop Moore. Edgewater RB
Cedric Baxter may be the top local prospect in the 2023 class. Co-OC/QB coach
GJ Kinne met with Thomas Castellanos.

Gus will head to Tampa on Tuesday and meet with RB
Xavier Townsend. The Knights have continued to pursue the Tampa-Berkeley Prep star despite his summer commitment to Iowa State. His teammate is UCF LB commit
T.J. Bullard and both recently attended the UConn game.

The biggest thing to watch though will be the Transfer Portal. Today was already getting crazy keeping track of the entries and I'm sure more will enter throughout the week. Every school has a few scholarship spots stashed away for portal guys so it will be quite competitive.
There will be probably be three "waves" of portal activity. I think there will be some pre-Dec. 15 action, players coaches want to lock in early without any regard for the existing HS classes. Then maybe another late December/early January wave to fill in some gaps, maybe these are guys you'd rather be kept silent until you sign your HS class in mid-December (you don't want to scare anybody off or give other teams ammo to flip your commits). And then a spring wave following spring practice. Remember, the deadline to enter the portal and be immediately eligible is May 1.
I'm trying to formulate a "hot board" of sorts of potential transfer targets and options... This is really uncharted territory in terms of recruiting coverage, trying to get a feel for how this process will play out. I'm thinking fewer guys will go on the record for who they are considering, visiting, etc., at least compared to the HS players.
The other interesting avenue will be FCS guys looking to make the move up, just like
Bryson Armstrong. UCF was poised to take Lamar OL
Bless Harris before he flipped to FSU. There is some talent there.
I think UCF is pretty much open to any talented player in the portal. Obvious focuses will be quarterback, wide receiver, offensive tackle, defensive tackle, linebacker and safety.
Maybe running back, but if
Isaiah Bowser is returning for another year maybe the need isn't quite as great. Not saying this guy is coming, but if you can upgrade talent, say a player like
Jahmyr Gibbs (Georgia Tech transfer), you absolutely take him.

Maryland LB
Terrence Lewis is definitely a name to watch - seriously considered Auburn out of high school and is familiar with T-Will. Miami, FSU, Ole Miss, Wisconsin and Auburn are also involved.
Quarterback? The top national prospect on the board right now is Oklahoma's
Spencer Rattler. I know the media consensus is that it seems he may want to get closer to the west coast. He's from Phoenix. Arizona State? Would he consider UCF?
Lots of rumors over the last week that Florida QB
Anthony Richardson would hit the portal, but seems like he's going to hear out Billy Napier before making a decision (or maybe that decision has been made?). UCF would obviously want to be in that running, but we'll see if anything comes of it.
If UCF can't land a more established QB, I think you then look to the list of players in the portal because of a depth chart squeeze. Guys like FSU's
Chubba Purdy, Baylor's
Jacob Zeno and Washington State's
Cammon Cooper.
