1. Houston
The administration bumping then-coach Tom Herman to $3 million for the 2016 season launched UH into the middle of Power 5-level pay. According to USA Today, that was better than nearly 30 Power 5 jobs.

Herman’s successor, Major Applewhite, isn’t making anywhere near that figure, but the attempt to keep Herman in place demonstrated what’s available for the right candidate.

Board chairman and influential donor Tilman Fertitta — of restaurant, casino and reality TV fame — is central to both making that decision and helping to fund it.

Partly to woo the Big 12, which has yet to work, Fertitta and Houston’s donor base has also shown enthusiasm for project development.

When 247Sports spoke recently to Applewhite, he was excited by progress toward a new indoor facility. When that’s complete, Houston then intends to add a football office complex as part of the relatively new TDECU Stadium compound.

And regardless how competitive Texas high school recruiting is, proximity to talent still greatly benefits Houston relative to many of its Group of 5 peers.

Fans are weary of seeing coaches leave so quickly for bigger jobs, but it’s actually a compliment to the program.

2. UCF
Granted, the edge between the two Florida-based American schools is slight — but UCF does have it over USF.

The on-campus stadium is a certain advantage, as well as not having to compete for NFL eyeballs.

Pay is inching toward $2 million for Scott Frost, which is above average relative to the tier.

There’s the obvious recruiting advantage for the Florida-based schools, especially considering the admission standard isn’t as high as their Power 5 brethren.

Many coaches do not think the program under George O’Leary touched its ceiling, even with a Fiesta Bowl win against Baylor late in his tenure.

This article could also be entitled "top 10 candidates for realignment"

Although I did have to chuckle at the part about USF "It was close to being a national power" Nothing like being #2 in the nation for a week. It should have read "They were close to pulling off the biggest sham of all times, but were exposed a week later"

A little surprised San Diego State didn't even make the Top 10 but I'm assuming the lack of financial investment into their Football Program is probably the reason. There are even some Pac12 Programs that have been cheap when it comes to coaches salaries or getting donors to want to give big checks for Football

"There’s the obvious recruiting advantage for the Florida-based schools, especially considering the admission standard isn’t as high as their Power 5 brethren."

Ummm... what the what?
Miami admitted Frank Gore. The guy has a severe learning disability and I think he might have even been illiterate.

Even non-scholarship Ivy colleges are given a 200 point or more break on SATs if the coach wants an athlete. Still, a Michigan or Stanford admitted jock is usually a lot better academically than say a Michigan St. or Mississippi St. jock.

I cant get behind this article too much. Temple had a great season but you cant call them top 10 G5 i think. Prob not smu either just imo.

Oh and UCF should always be #1:pimp:

That's not what the article is implying. They're not saying UCFs football team would lose to UFs in an academic decathlon. They are saying that UCF only gets some kids because FSU, UF, and Miami can't accept them. That's nonsense, FSU isn't passing on a Dalvin Cook, because he scored under 1100 on the SATs. If the NCAA will let them play and one of them wants them, they'll go after them.

I'm not sure if that's even the case for a regular student anymore, but there's certainly no difference if you can play football.

Yeah, it's a ridiculous argument any way you slice it, but for giggles, according to prepscholar.com:

UCF:
On the new 1600 SAT, this corresponds to an average SAT score of 1300.
The average GPA at UCF is 3.81.
The acceptance rate at UCF is 49%.

FSU:
On the new 1600 SAT, this corresponds to an average SAT score of 1280.
The average GPA at FSU is 3.88.
The acceptance rate at FSU is 57%.

Grade inflation

Is it more difficult to get accepted to FSU?
It is, but that's a purely theoretical question. I did outreach a couple years ago at an AP class at a top Orlando high school. They'd all been rejected by FSU. Five years ago, it was only UF doing that. Ten years before that, one high school adviser told me that UF had never turned down one of their IB (International Bach.) students. So UCF has become the statewide school of choice simply because UF and FSU have become so hard to get into (because of years of budget cuts). Still, UCF rejects a majority of its applicants, thus making it more selective than many of the big name P5 schools like Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, as well as most of the SEC schools.

UCF is obviously more selective now than when I went to school there. No way they let me in now with my GPA and SAT. Oh and both FSU and UF accepted me as well.

I thought the same thing. Glad I went to UCF when I did. No chance I get in now. My niece applied to UCF, and although I'd love for her to attend her uncle's alma mater, I don't think she has the grades to get in.

Very nice.

Writer is a troll who recently got fired from ESPN...and since he went to Univ of Tennessee...its laughable to see him write anything in regards to "academic standards".

I don't think he meant any harm or wanted to troll, he just doesn't have every detail about UCF as a University. It's the same thing as some of our fans getting way too upset when someone calls us 'Central Florida.'

Most of these G5 schools(especially the MAC) are stereotyped as 'back up schools' for traditional students but UCF has become an exception where it has become the first choice for many in the State of Florida.

The truth is that most of the P5 are flagship "residence" schools where 4-day weekend binge partying is their college experience. They have a natural football (and basketball) advantage over G5 schools, dominated by commuter, part-timers, and "non-traditional" older students with families who are working their way through school. Even G5 schools that are residence colleges tend to be known as "suitcase" colleges (in-state students all go home for many weekends, thus getting them labelled "dead" on weekends (the kiss of death). After graduation, P5 schools have the statewide networking and alumni support to make their alma mater's football prominent on their calendar.

Love the part in the list where UWCF is shown to have a "Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda" history.....
