Not excessive, but a case can be made about practicality. An AR is no more and no less effective than other guns for a myriad of purposes. To get over that hill through, you are going to have to prove that it makes more sense for someone to own a handgun, a shotgun, a small rifle, and a large rifle when an AR can perform all of the same tasks.

I don't "need" one but it's my right to have one. I've hog hunted with mine and I really enjoy target shooting with it also. It's a very fun gun to shoot.
Shooting coyotes and rabbits. Possibly feral hogs and deer. Home protection. Target practice. Leisure and entertainment.

That makes no sense. The ballistics for an AR-15 are essentially the exact same as those of a .223 or .22-250 other than the speed and flatness of the latter. Why would it make me not a very good marksman to use one?
