Coaching Rumors...

My choices would be:
Houston Nutt

Cristobal is not my first choice. But when I hear people say he can't coach and look at his record I am reminded of the old proverb: It is better to remain silent and let people think you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt. It has been mentioned that he only won during the one season when he had TY Hilton. Is it possible that he could attract more TY Hilton's to a school like UCF? My guess is that he could. However, that will not solve our problems. UCF is usually going to have solid players at the skill positions. UCF is in Florida and it really isn't that hard to find diamonds in the rough down here, especially at WR, RB, and DB. Where we come up lacking is on the line of scrimmage. We need somebody who can get us solid O-line and D-line recruits and then coach them up. Until we get into a P5 conference, we aren't going to compete for the Martez Ivey's of the world. UCF will have to develop talent like the McCray's and Jordan Rae's of the world.

My choices would be:
Houston Nutt- won pretty big in a state with marginal high school talent
Jim Leavitt- built the USF program from nothing only to watch others destroy it
Mario Cristobal- Good recruiter, would likely be boom or bust.
Matt Campbell- Built a solid program, I guess, I really don't know much about him other than this season

As others have stated, no matter who they hire, there is going to be a risk. I would like to see us hire someone with a proven track record that might see this as their last coaching job and want to stay a while and try to carry us over the P5 threshold. I think if we do get into the P5, we would be a very attractive school to a lot of HC candidates and when this coach decides to retire, you could see some serious interest in this job. What we need in the meantime is to get back to consistently winning. In all honesty, that might take a season or two. If they have found their AD, then he needs to find the next HC in the next 2-3 weeks so they have a decent amount of time to recruit. This recruiting class will be at a disadvantage with the short time spent recruiting. If we hire someone with local ties the learning curve will be far less and it would probably enhance our ability to turn this around quickly, especially if said coach can actually, you know, coach. Leavitt would be able to fall back on his past recruiting relationships in the state of Florida, and I would imagine he would be able to put together a pretty good staff.

This kids is why you don't do crack.

Who is it that is on your list that has beaten a national championship squad?
Who is it that is on your list that had a 2 time Heisman runnerup?
Who is it that is on your list that twice won the SEC West?

Don't know that much about him, but I can remember a lot of controversies and a streak of SEC loses. Just tenures that ended badly. He's been out of coaching awhile and 59 when UCF will start the 2016 season. Not too old. Not the worst choice, but not the best IMO. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of a top choice. Mine are Cristobal, Leavitt, or Campbell.

GOL = damaged goods, almost over the hill

Jim Leavitt = damaged goods, almost over the hill

Looks like a good succession plan for UCF.

He's 58. Won't use UCF as a stepping
stone and can recruit/build a program.
Now has NFL defense experience

Seems too soon for him to be jumping into a FBS HC gig. From director of IMG to 1 year as QB coach in the NFL doesn't seem like enough experience. Maybe he should look to be an offensive coordinator at a big program or in the NFL first.

I always like Weinke when he was leading FSU in the late 90s/early 2000s. Its too soon for him to be a head coach. At least White's selection at Buffalo coached at Div 3 level and won six national titles.

I think Weinke may end up being good, needs to cut his teeth at 1aa or Mac level first.

Weinke: "I hate living and working in St. Louis, let me call my buddy that covers FSU for 247 to leak my name for the UCF job"

did they reject him, or did he reject them. If you offer me a job, I might think about it, and look into it, then realize, I will have to pass. If Houston Nutt would have applied for UConn, Tulsa or almost any of those other jobs, he would have been hired or somebody else should have been fired.

As far as cristobal and Leavitt go, I think Leavitt is the safer pick. Cristobal has more potential.

Nutt's problem in Arkansas is that he didn't want to throw the football a ton when he had a freshman out of Springdale who was the #1 QB recruit in the nation and a stud WR. The problem with airing it out all over the place was that he had Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis. Would you air it out, or keep it on the ground most of the time?

Ole Miss, he won back to back Cotton Bowls with the players Ogeron couldn't win 5 games with. I think he was 9-4 each of his first two seasons. They were the originators of the sign that said 90% of America was wrong (what UCF players were holding up in the Fiesta Bowl), 90% had predicted Michael Crabtree's Texas Tech Red Raiders would roll Ole Miss. By the way, Ole Miss that year, the only team to beat Florida who just happened to win the national championship. Expectations got real high, and he missed on some/ a lot of recruits and very quickly they were a 2 win or so team and he was shown the door. People complain about the style of O'Leary ball, watch some film of Arkansas and Ole Miss under Nutt- they played some crazy games.

Cristobal is taking L's left and right :joy::joy:

I was told early Tuesday that Mario Cristobal won’t be retained at Bama regardless of whether he gets a coaching job or not. There have been too many differences of opinion between he and Saban and Saban has informed him he won’t be back.- From an SEC scout reporter

As of Tuesday, UM had shown no interest in interviewing former UM player and current Alabama assistant Mario Cristobal, according to an associate.

“We don’t want a guy who was fired by FIU,” one high-level UM Trustee said, scoffing at his 27-47 record there
